Winnipeg Jets year in review

PRESEASON OUTLOOK: Strong. The Jets the year before had made a late push and made the postseason and although they lost to the Ducks in a sweep, it was a hard fought series.

FINAL RECORD: 35-39-8 78 points, 11th in the West. Missed the playoffs.

HIGH POINT OF THE YEAR: A nice start to the season, when they bested the Leafs on November 4th they climbed to 8-4-1.

LOW POINT OF THE YEAR: They then went on a six game losing streak and lost 9 out of 12. By the time December rolled around they were flat and never really quite got into the race.

STRANGE STAT OF THE YEAR: Drew Stafford had 14 goals and 27 points at home but was awful (7-4-11) on the road. Blake Wheeler for all of his size and command on the ice again was a power play dud with only 3 PPG. Mark Mark Scheifele Scheifele had a strange year, the breakdown:

first 45 games 13 goals 15 assists 28 points.

final 26 games 16 goals 17 assist 33 points.

He scored more in the final third of the season than he did in the first two thirds combined.

WHAT WENT RIGHT: Start with Scheifele who had the breakthrough season many predicted and now looks like the long coveted 1C they have needed. Andrew Ladd was good and then netted them a nice package of Dano and picks. Blake Wheeler (26-52-78) was a point a game performer. Conner . (Photo/Bruce Fedyck/USA TODAY Sports) Connor Hellebuyck Connor ... Hellebuyck broke into the league and was brilliant for stretches. Big Buff was his usual self. Stafford netted 21 goals, Perreault looked great for stretches. Ehlers had growing pains as a kid but showed immense promise. Trouba was one of the leagues best in the hits and blocked shots categories, a force on the back end although his overall offense needs to improve.

WHAT WENT WRONG: Bryan Little slipped a little and then was injured in a collision with Stralman and missed the final 25 games. Buff was forced to play defense in part because of overall lack of offense from the back end, besides Buff only Tyler Myers had more than 21 points back there and he had other deficiencies. Alex Burmistrov came back and proved his problems were not all just a coaches doing, he was not good. Pavelec was injured and ineffective when playing, and Hutchinson was horrible at times. Depth was a serious problem.

MVP: Going with Blake Wheeler filer. Wheeler but the way that Scheifele played down the stretch was a sight to behold.

FREE AGENTS: Nothing to speak of really, Grant Clitsome, Adam Pardy and Matt Halischuk, all soon gone and soon forgotten.

TOP PROSPECTS: With Ehlers graduating to the big team, and Hellebuyck a virtual lock to own a good portion of the net, it still leaves Josh Morrisey who will push for a top 4 role on the back end, the Jets are excited about him. Kyle Connor should be in the middle six among the forwards adding scoring and depth this year with HUGE upside. Nicolas Petan got his feet wet, he will be a good one. Some people are high on both Dano and Armia but truthfully I dont see much other than filler roles for either. Same goes with Brendan Lemieux and Scott Kosmachuk. But an organization that will ice Ehlers, Hellebuyck, Connor, Petan and Morrisey is stacked with top tier talent and can afford to take a chance with some mid level guys like that.

OFFSEASON QUESTIONS: Can they find a taker for Pavelec or is the net big enough for he and Hellboy? Do they make a push to resign Ladd? Is the injection of youth enough to get the ship sailing again or do they need to go shopping?

I'd like to see this franchise enjoy some success for a change because the fans up there deserve much better than this franchise has given them.

And to answer your question, they need to go shopping. They have a lot of pieces missing on that team and I think the patience of Winnipeg fans is ready to run out. The Jets need to be buyers this summer and do something to restock this roster quickly. Having some proven talent and some players with name recognition in the league would help boost the team's image. :)

Shop for what?

They have some fantastic young guys who are only getting better before our eyes.

Little's injury was unfortunate and the team faltered down the stretch. Scheifele had a concussion at one point too. But overall, I don't think they need to do a whole lot. Trouba showed flashes, Buff is Buff and Myers might never be a #1, but he is a solid #3. Morrisey looks good too. On defense, they might shop for a #5/6.

At C? Little + Scheifele = top 6 C's covered. Lowry played very well in a checking capacity and they have options. No need for a C

Wheeler and Ehlers on Scheifele's line looked deadly down the stretch. A promising 1st line. Stafford and Perreault play wing very well and can jump between 2nd and 3rd line with Little and Lowry. Burmistrov showed flashes as well.

Dano and Armia looked decent and now have more experience.

Hellboy was amazing and is going to be a #1 goalie.

Connors is probably getting a shot with the big club next year too.

They have a good blend of Vets(Buff, Wheeler, Stafford, Little) and youth(Scheifele, Ehlers, Trouba) and a lot of guys in between.

UFA moves for 4th liners and 6th Dmen at most.

If anything, they need to play more disciplined. They take penalties like mad.

Well, their power play stank. They finished 20th in GPG and 22nd in GAA. They could benefit from some off-season shopping at any position -- cap permitting of course. Goaltending might be the only thing I'd leave alone. But I don't follow the Jets too closely. :)

Finding a PP system that works is on coaching. They have the horses to run there, but are not deploying them effectively. It is also on coaching to deter the team from taking a zillion penalties.

Partly yes, but the top end players the Jets have should be able to muster better than 30th. There's something not clicking there.

I'd also ditch Drew Stafford (-23) and Mathieu Perreault (-11) and find some other veteran guys to replace them. That's ugly.

+/- is a misleading stat.

Phaneuf was -4 for the leafs, while Reilly was -17. Which would you rather have?

Stafford was pretty darn good for the jets. So was Perreault. The team as a whole had some farts.

Blake Wheeler has long been a flop on the power play, and it is a mystery. He has the size and the look and feel of a power froward but with the man advantage he is a non-entity.

But it will get better. They have Connor and the second pick in the draft will add Laine in all likelihood. Throw them in the mix and it will get better.

I am not a fan of Lowry in any role other than a 4C period. A damn good 4C but that is it. Little is getting old but as a 2C still fine, but I think they need a middle six center and maybe one more defenseman and they should be in the conversation again real soon.

Let me explain what I mean with Wheeler a little bit more in depth.

He had 3 PPG last year. He had 2 the year before.

he did have 8 the year before but just two years before that he went the entire season without a power play goal. He is 6 foot 5 and 230 pounds, he looks like he should have 10 PPG a year but for some reason he is missing that Xfactor that it takes to make him fight down low or something. Not saying he is soft but he is not hard, he does not do the little things needed to make it happen on the power play. And he is their captain.

True, but Stafford and Perreault weren't contributing anything offensively either. It's a double whammy. At least to me, 0.50 PPG is nothing special unless you combine it with great defensive play. I want my veteran guys to have 1.00+ PPG. The veterans should be the best players on the team (in most circumstances). :)

Time for some WoW analysis:   :5726b5fbef6cc_pyramiddance:

POS JER NAME       DE   GP    ATOI   TTOI   MPBE   G A Pts TPM      Def%
D 44 Morgan Rielly 28   82      23 : 14 1905    68.0   9 27 36   8   .985
D 3 Dion Phaneuf 17   51      22 : 02 1124    66.1   3 21 24   7   .985

What it all means:

Phaneuf had 24 PTS in 51 GP as a Leaf (0.47 PPG). He committed 17 defensive errors, playing an average of 66.1 minutes between those errors. His true +/- was 7.

Rielly had 36 PTS in 82 GP (0.44 PPG). He committed 28 defensive errors, playing an average of 68.0 minutes between those errors. His true +/- was 8.

Conclusion:

Too close to call. Both players were approximately even in their performance with the Leafs. Phaneuf did slightly more offensively (not the result anyone expected) and Rielly actually played slightly better defence than Phaneuf (again, opposite of what people think).  It's a wash.

Rielly has more UPSIDE of course. He's improving while Phaneuf has plateaued and will decline soon. No doubt about it. But they were equals this past season. :)

I think Stafford contributed admirably. Mostly 3rd line, but bouncing to the 2nd line during injuries and was their 3rd highest goalscorer.

Perreault is more versatile. Playing C or W and contributing 40 points a year, which is good production for a 3 million dollar player.

Ehlers getting top line icetime next year is going to change things up a bit. He came out the gates swinging, then cooled and was demoted to the 3rd line for much of the season. Ladd's trade and Little's injury opened up his chance and he ran with it. Ehlers in a bottom 6 role was destined to fail. The guy is a skill player and needs other skill players who can understand what he is doing.

Ehlers was not given much in the way of PP time early on except during his first 2 weeks. But the lions share of his PP points came towards the end of the season.

One thing they need to do is decide on a PP pointman. Myers was very "Meh" in that role. Trouba showed flashes, but was always stuck on PP 2. Buff gets used to stand in front an screen the goalie as much as he gets point time.

But I am not too concerned. I honestly think with the amount of talent they have that is under 22, now with another year of experience and the guys they have coming up showing promise like Armia, Dano, Connors......

They could make a move for Hamonic I guess. but he will not fix their PP problems. I don't see anyone  as UFA who will fix their point. Campbell would help, but he is past his best days and loves sunny Florida. Goligoski? A product of secondary assists to Benn and Seguin, not a guy who runs things. Demers? A bit better, but risky in the wrong system.

If anything they could go for Lucic to stand in front while freeing Buff to work the point....LOL. And we want to work on their penalty problem....

Hi Guys, I'm a Leafs fan but I just wanted to say congrats to you guys coming in second. If any team I wanted there was to make me happy it is the Jets. Most other team fans don't like the Leafs but I've always found most Jets fans like the Leafs second best so Iève made them my second favorate team. Good luck in the coming season.

Hello,

:welcome:

Lots of us here just enjoy watching and discussing hockey no matter what teams are playing.  My favorites are the Flyers and Wild and I'll watch any NHL game as long as one is on.   The top 3 teams this year are all going to get a good draft pick and that has to be exciting for all involved.

They still need a sniper on the PP. They never could get the right lines. Coaches were moving around the PP lines too much. No consistency.
