Without Sid, Who's the Face of the NHL?

Sidney Crosby is out again with post-concussion symptoms from a collision with Chris Kunitz. The bad news in this situation is that it didn't even take a head hit to start the post concussion symptoms again. Not a good sign for the Penguins or the NHL. Sid is the face of the league and the NHL needs for him to play for it to grow (hate him or not you know it's true). This situation reminds of Eric Lindros or Pat Lafontaine, but worse with the caliber of player Crosby is. With concussions be

Unsportsmanlike and Other Misconduct.

Okay, had a great time in the last game I reffed. Look folks, I usually love a blow out hockey game. They're even more appreciated when the game starts at 10:45pm. What is never called for is the running of mouths needlessly. It's one thing to communicate with your team mates. It's completely another, when you're the team up by 7 or 8 goals to continue to verbally abuse or taunt opponents and the officials. In a 3 or 4 referee system, if you're pleading your case to a

The NHL's Concussion Issue

Since the beginning of the 2011-2012 season, Claude Giroux, Sidney Crosby, Jeff Skinner, Brayden Schenn, Daniel Paille, Peter Muller, Joey Hishon, Radek Martinek, Marek Zidlicky, Nino Niederreriter, Michael Sauer, Milan Michalek, Zbynek Michalek, Kris Letang and Andy Mcdonald have all been diagnosed with concussions. While the NHL attempts to remove hits to the head, some hits are just regular hits that lead to these concussions. With the technology in today’s sports it’s really hard to figure o

Hawks, Lets Get Wild!

Tonight the beloved Hawks take on the Western Conference leading Minnesota Wild in St. Paul. The Hawks come into tonight's game with a record of 4-0-1 in their last five games and are 6-1-1 in their last eight. The Wild, a team that has greatly exceeded all expectations to date, has gone 7-3-0 in their last ten games losing Tuesday night after winning seven straight contests. Tonight's game is a critical game for the Hawks as the West is ending up being an extremely tough conference. As I have s

A trip to an NHL game with my munchkin.

Growing up in a town sans a NHL hockey, team I used to be enamored by NHLers. Over my career in hockey as I played in various leagues and went to pro training camps and practiced with an IHL team on a regular basis I grew a little disillusioned by NHLers. Knowing them on a personal level showed me that they are just as human as I was. With that said, they were all clearly taller and had more talent than I did as I grew up in the mid western U.S. and they in areas of the states, Canada and other

No Giroux, No Pronger, No Problem for Flyers

The Flyers received bad news on Tuesday. The Flyers would be without Giroux indefinitely. “I wasn’t very confident about this game when we lost G- we lost the best player in the league” said Flyers forward Jaromir Jagr. The Flyers faithful may have lost some confidence as well considering the Flyers were only 7-0-3 against Washington in their last 10 game so the odds seemed stacked against them. However, the Flyers stormed into the Verizon Center with some of the best depth in the NHL and cruise

Week That Was

I'll slightly touch on the Sabres snooze fest of a weekend. Borning 2-1 win in OT Friday against Florida and boring injury riddled 4-1 loss to the Blue Shirts Saturday. Enroth had his performance since the game on Columbus and the PP continues to be a joke giving up 2 shorthanded goals 5th of the season. Unacceptable that lands on coaching. This team is dead in the water with the current injury status, when you have Paul Szezechura centering your top line your in trouble. Hopefully by the t

Need to Play a Road Game at Home

Tonight the Southeast division leading Florida Panthers are in town. They have been a surprise team this year led by new bench boss Kevin Dineen. Panthers had monster turnover in the offseason signing Goc, Jovanowski, Theodore, Fleischman, Kopecky, and Upshall to name a few. Trading for Campbell and trading Booth to Vancouver early in the season. Jose "Three or More" Theodore has been anything but his usual self this year. He is playing well and shutout a hot boston team 2-0 in TD Garden la

Road Points, Take em if You Can Get em!

I asked the yesterday, "Which Hawks teams show up tonight?" and the question was answered as I hoped. The Hawks had solid effort last night against the Islanders from the Razor last night and Hossa and Sharpie provided the offense in a Hawks 3-2 victory. It was nice to see the Hawks score first and play well except for a few minor spots during the game that I will touch on later. First, congrats to Hossa for scoring his 400th career goal, it was a lucky one. Two of the goals last night came from

Enough of Ruff

Before I get into Ruff Leino has his hearing today for his elbow to Matt Read last night, since Leino is a first time offender I expect a fine at most but wouldn't shock me to see a 1 game suspension which in my opinion is deserved. On the other hand the fact that there will be no hearing for Bourbon with the Czar of discipline is a little surpring to me. Gerbe has a concussion and is now added to the list of injuries thanks to that Bourbon hit. We will see how it all unfolds. Lindy Ruff the

Which Blackhawks team Shows Up Tonight?

After a dissapointing loss to the Yotes Tuesday (Yotes 4 Toews 3), thats a big question. Think about it for a moment... The beloved Hawks are not as good as their record. Let me repeat that, the beloved Hawks are not as good as their record. I know, I know some of you may be upset at this realization but unfortunately its true. (Move to "Tonight's Game" below if you are afraid to read the next paragraph and face reality). If you are one of those that believes that this is a Stanley Cup team, yo

Classic Sabres Home Game

Well well well....where to begin here? Another home game another blown lead and another home loss. This kind of felt like groundhog dog of the 2010 playoffs, just missing the goalie change. The Sabres got a quick start pushing the play and got a 3-0 lead, then the turnovers begin and Philly makes it 3-1 with 1 second left in the first. Tropp did he best to get the momentum back as time expired in the first with a good scrap with Rinaldo. The late goal probably saved Bryzgalov from a hook aft

Look Who's Back...The Orange and Black

The Flyers invade the First Niagara Center tonight for the 2nd and final time this season. The last 2 meetings between these two teams have less than ideal for the Sabres. Both games seeing Ryan Miller getting chased and luckluster starts. Game 7 of the '10 playoffs Philly won 5-1 and earlier this season the Flyers jumped to a quick 3-0 lead before the Sabres faithful could reach their seats. The Sabres made it close but still ended up losing 3-2. The First Niagara Center has not been a pla

A Few Issues with Realignment and Injury Problems Continue

Hopefully this topic never comes up again, Tootoo received a 2 game ban for charging Miller Saturday night. Good, end of story, hopefully the Sabres let it go too. Now onto the NHL radical realignment that puts the NHL into 4 conferences, which in fact I hate that they are calling them conferences instead of divisions. If they are divisions you can keep the East and West format. Anyways I digress, I like how the conferences are set up, everyone is happy in a way, nobody got left out of a Wes

Payback?

Less then a week ago the Yotes came into town and gave the Hawks who were returning home for the first time after a two week road trip a 4-1 a$$ whoopin. After chewing up and spitting out the Hawks, the Yotes went up to Winnipeg and lost 1-0 then went home and lost to the Flyers 4-2. Hmm. makes you wonder doesn't it? Look for Corey Crawford to start tonight but he must realize that the leash is getting shorter especially after the performance that Razor had on Saturday against the Blues. I also

It's getting harder to be Kings

Scoring is becoming a problem for the Kings. Mike Richards, just when he was getting hot (7 goals in his last 8 games) is expected to miss at least 7 days after being hit by Bergenheim last Wednesday which is not good news if you are Kings fan. He leads the Kings with 8 even-strength goals. Gagne and Kopitar are next on the list with 6 but there's a big drop off after that. The rest of the boys have 2 or fewer. 34 even-strength goals is good enough for 29th in the league. That's not going t

Thoughts on Tootoo and Realignment

Before I get into Tootoo and Realignment I want to make a few comments on the Sabres vs Preds game Saturday night. It's good to see Leino start to get going and be rewarded for his hard work. He is starting get point and be a difference make on this team, I hope he can stay on track. Kassian continues to impress using his size and strength to keep the puck away from defenders he is going to be a stud. Ehrhoff is a horse. The line of Stafford, Roy, and Ennis did it's best to try to get Nashv

Go big on NHL realignment

The NHL has been struggling for years with teams that are not profitable. Forbes said it best: "Of the league’s top 13 markets for revenue growth, which have collectively averaged a 48% increase over the past five years, none is further south than Pittsburgh." Why does the NHL insist on keeping 11 non-profitable teams afloat in markets that don't care enough about hockey to keep their team there? This is the year for the NHL to take dramatic steps. Not only realignment but relocation and r

Where's the Scoring?

Well last nights game against the Wings looked rather familiar. Another slow start by the home town Sabres, another uninspired 1st period, another early 3-0 hole, another road team walks out happy, another home loss, and more injuries. First the injuries Gerbe left early after Gaustad's skate cut through his lip and nose on a faceoff and Kaleta again left early (sound familiar? he has a little Timmy Connolly in him). Cory Tropp has been recalled from Rochester and Matt Ellis will jump back in

Nobody leaves here without singing the Blues…

For the Hawks, I hope they are not singing the blues as the Hawks head to St. Louis to take on the Blues. But first, a quick look at last night’s game against the Islanders. The Hawks escaped with a 5-4 SO win. Let me repeat the word “escaped.” Captain Serious continues to be a leader on this team and stepped up and scored the game winner in the shoot out as the Islander’s, Matt Moulson, (the final Islanders shooter), shot off the post secured the Hawk’s victory. The Hawks struggled last night a

Long Island Ice Tea Anyone

Tonight the Hawks take on the New York Islanders at the Madhouse. A repeat performance of Tuesday night loss to the Yotes and we’ll all be drinking Long Islands. After a long road trip the Hawks came home and played another emotionless game and the final score reflected it. Just think, it wasn’t that long ago the Hawks had a dominating lead in the Central Division and led the Western Conference. That is no longer the case. Their lead has all but disappeared and a review of their part of the sche

December a Make or Break Month for the Sabres

Tonight begins a very important month for the Buffalo Sabres when the red hot Detroit Red Wings visit the First Niagara Center. The interesting part of this matchup is that these two teams could have a similar situation occur. In October the Wings were struggling to score goals and pilled up a long losing streak. Datsyuk and Zetterberg were ice cold and people started to talk about the Wings finally hitting the wall. Not the case in November the Wings became red hot and so did Datsyuk and Ze

Survival without Pronger

The Flyers have a tough task at hand over the next four weeks if they want to stay in the playoff race through out the month of December. We have 13 games ahead of us until the Classic showdown against the Rangers. Of those thirteen games only three, the Penguins, Lightening, and Bruins will be home games. In addition over the month of December all of the teams we play against except for maybe the Avalanche are currently playoff contenders. The Flyers will need to play each game, each period
