Thoughts on the Christensen-Wellman Trade

Wellman has been traded to the New York Rangers for Erik Christensen and a conditional 2013 seventh round pick. If the Wild re-sign Christensen, they won’t get the pick.

Wellman was one of the Wild's first big college free-agent pickup out of UMass.  At the time there was a lot of excitement in his acquisition, but he has fallen in the depth chart of the Wild’s forwards.  Thus Flecher has kept his word that he would not trade away any of the top prospects in the system.

Christensen, 28, will fit into the Wild starting line-up right away.  He is expected to play third line center in Dallas on Saturday between Darroll Powe and Carson McMillan.  He has five points in 20 games for the Rangers this season, and three points in five games for the Whale.   Mike Yeo coached Christensen in both Wilkes-Barre and Pittsburgh: "I'm excited. He's a quality NHL player. He's got elite skill. That's one thing for sure. His hands, his passing ability, his vision, his shot, he's versatile, good power-play guy, can win face-offs and good on shootouts."  Christensen ranks 9th all-time with 24 shootout goals.

Since there is the possibility that both Bouchard and Latendresse could be out the rest of the season,  Christensen can provide the Wild with some NHL scoring-skill right now.

Now, can we just trade Zidlicky.
