Let us go a step farther here and predict who specifically the Flyers will take.

I would like to see them take a goaltender with the #20 pick. Specifically Oscar Dansk

I think they are going to go defense, but in my heart of hearts...I want the big Russian netminder Andrei Vasilevski. Nice size at 6'3 and 204. Super fast reflexes.....had a outrageous .953 save percentage WJC. The big problem is this theory an NHL team will stash him away in the KHL and call him back as a finished product 2 years later.....how many teams are willing to take that kinda risk....chances are a KHL team will fall in love with the kids game and make an offer higher than an NHL team could muster....and he gets to stay home.

The other two big tenders are Dansk and Subban, all of them, or at least 2 of the 3 are going to be there when they pick ( I think...lol). Of the defenders (and I mean non top 10 defenders) I like Olli Matta, but think he will be gone...but I'm sure Koekkoek or Finn would be fine picks. Throw Dalton Thrower in there as an underdog. If they take Thrower, they could move back a bit and snag an extra 3rd rounder.

Missed an option, best available. I think that's what they will do.

The giant russian goalie is an intriguing option. If the KHL will continue to honor NHL contracts, sign him after one year and let it slide (if the new CBA lets teams do that).

Who was the last goalie picked in the early rounds that really developed? I realize most goalies are selected from the draft, but it seems the most sucessful are developed. If you the consider the Pen's Fleury a top goalie I guess he would count. I'm hoping a pick will be available Homer and the boys thought would go much earlier(Cooter) and suprise us all. The Flyers youth movement is a good thing,Homer should stick with it.

I don't support taking either Dansk or the Russian goalie, or any goalie. I think they will take a D-man in part because I think a D-man will be the best player available at #20.

I have read, (maybe here ?) that maybe Subban and/or Dansk could still be available by the time the Flyers pick in the 3rd round. I'd definitely use #20 to pick the best available defenseman. unless then plan is to unload a top 6 wing to land the stud defenseman, then I use it on a big righthand shot winger with some hockey smarts.

@Podein25

i would imagine that the top 3 for any position would be snatched up by then also, I think I read that on Meltzer's blog a week ago, and totally agree that this would be a good draft to have a second round pick for....

One of the mock drafts I looked at has both Dansk and Vasilevski going 18 and 19 respectively. Tampa maybe less likely to pick up a goalie now that they just acquired Lindbach. I''d be hesitant on the Russian, but both D-men and Goalies take some time to develop and the cupboard is bare here in Flyerville when it comes to goalies.

Holmgren on draft strategy.

Yeah, take the BPA. That's my view generally. I get it.

But it has to be a bit more complicated than BPA, because you are comparing Goalies to D to Forwards. It's like comparing apples to oranges to cumquats, at least a little bit. So the whole BPA thing is pretty subjective. If it is, why not draft for position?

Holmgren probably chooses to say that he will pick the best player on the board as a formality. He probably doesn't want to state his strategy publicly. Which makes sense. TG the Rangers knew the Flyers wanted Sanguinetti. :)

I can see trading the #20 pick to the Leafs for their #5 and getting taking a shot at Cody Ceci. Dreaming though because more than likely if the Luongo rumors are true, I can see that pick along with others going to Vancouver.

The only thing is they (Burke and Co) are going to want a lot to make this happen. I wouldn't trade JvR to facilitate this either. Maybe Brandon Manning and our 1st and 3rd could make this happen.

Besides Burke will waste his 1st on somebody from Coastal Carolina Community College.

If we can't draft a decent defender in the 1st round, maybe go with a forward and acquire the defense through free agency or a trade.

If Holmgren does pick a goalie in the first round then they can let him develop in the AHL for a year or so since Bryzgalov is signed for another 8 years and will probably be here for at least the next 4 years unless the fans run him right out of town. As for drafting a defenseman, the Flyers need a top 4 defenseman now not a couple of years from now so they'll probably have to go the trade route to get that defenseman.

I am a firm believer in selecting the best player available when it comes to the NHL draft. In the NFL its a little different because there are fewer trades and a lot of times you need to select a 22 year old guy out of college to step in and help you right now.

In the NHL you can draft the BPA and he still seems to have just as much value in your system as the pick itself. Its almost like in baseball where it doesn't matter where you pick a guy, he can really appreciate in your farm system. But in the NFL from the time you use the pick until the time that player proves himself at the NFL level the pick depreciates in value.

The picks almost seem to have more value before you use them in the NFL so that teams can draft for need as well, but in the NHL if you pick the best talent the value still appreciates in college and in the AHL.

2002- Cam Ward (25th)

2003- MAF (1st)

2004- Cory Schneider (26th)

2005- Carey Price (5th)

Should I go on???

This is one of the best d-men drafts in the past 10 years. It is stocked with d-men in the top 60. Don't be surprised to see the Flyers take a d-man.
