Scholarship and Arena To Be Named After Wayne Fleming There were two major announcements made by the U of M concerning honouring the late Wayne Fleming. First, a scholarship has been set up and it has been announced that captain Dane Crowley is the first winner. It will now be known as the Wayne Fleming Arena located at the Max Bell Centre. For those who have not been on the campus. the Max Bell Centre includes an indoor track and field facility to the west of the hockey arena, with a gym and the usual workout facilities. Joined to those to the north is the Investor's Group Athletic Centre, which hosts volleyball, basketball, and other events. So there will still be facilities named after Max Bell. Fleming had a very impressive resume. The Bisons carried the play, limited Toronto (for the most part) to perimeter play, generated a massive advantage in territory and shots on goal, but could not score. Toronto golatender Garrett Sheehan was very good in goal. He never made the spectacular saves that Brett Willows made on Saturday night. But he still kept his team in a game that could have over mid-way through the 2nd period. The Bisons gave Joe Caligiuri the start and one more period in net. He was fighting the puck on Saturday and, since he appears tipped to be the #1, I don't think they wante dhim to face the Evil Monkeys coming off a game like that. So, he got one more period. Deven Dubyk gives me lots of confidence. Since the Bisons not only play two games against the Primates, they also play the No-Longer-Fighting Sioux, I suspect that the management will give each of them at least one start. There must be some concern on the injury front. On each of the last two weekends the Bisons have dressed only 19 players for the second game. This time it was Jordan DePape who played just the once. The Bisons shuffled their first three lines and played them all relatively equally. None stood out above the other. They all generated scoring chances by the bucket-load. But where is the finish? Was it just good opposition goaltending? These are the questions to be answered. The 4th liners (Coates and Dalebozik) were used with a variety of linemates, often Ciarelli or Paulsen. I suspect that both are slated to be extra forwards this year once Lauder, Duval, and DePape are in the line-up. The blueliners all looked good. I suspect that newcomer Pierre Landry will be the extra once Dane Crowley returns to the line-up. Over the weekend, Landry took a regular shift and was not out of place. Since Paulsen appears to have found a home with the forwards, I would feel a lot more comfortable if they had one more body on the roster. Maybe there is somebody in the pipeline. The Bisons have finished the pre-season at 5-4-1, and the Blahs are 1-1-0. The team also announced that the family of the late Wayne Fleming will be at Friday's home opener for a dedication ceremony. I am not sure what this entails but I am looking forward to it. OUT OF TOWN SCOREBOARD REGINA COUGARS 2 SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 5 Link: [U of S Story] This was a late addition to the schedule, which I stumbled upon at the Regina schedule page. The Sask site is crappola. This is too bad since they are hosting the U-Cup this year. It would be nice if they had a good and easy-to-navigate website. I obtained a link for the game story on this one by going to the main sport site and clicking through to find a story. If you go to the hockey team's page, good luck. They have a roster page with a picture of each player and nothing else. In this game Kenton Dulle scored a 3rd period hat-trick to win it for the Mangy Ones. The Canines are now 3-2-0 and the Felines 3-4-0 in the pre-season. UBC THUNDERBIRDS 5 SIMON FRASER CLAN 1 Link: [UBC Story] This was the return match and was hosted by The Clown. Therefore, no LeagueStat for this game. The Tweety-Birds should have kicked off the rust with this series. Next weekend they go way up north to Alaska for a pair of games before starting the regular season on October 11th against Bedrock. The sweep makes the T-Birds 2-0-0 in the pre-season. Maybe it is a case of teams starting to catch up to the Monkeys after they got off to an early start. Nevertheless, the Monkeys are still 9-2-0 in the pre-season (best in the CW) and the Extinct Ones are 4-3-1 (tied with Manitoba for second). If the teams repeat their performance on Sunday afternoon, the Bisons will probably win 6-2. Blues' goaltender Brett Willows made at least a half dozen spectacular saves, and had some goalpost and cross bar assistance, to keep the Blues close. It was tough for Caligiuri. The Bisons were seemingly on pace for a routine win when a loose puck on a PP led to a 2-on-1 break and a game-tieing goal for the Blues. The second goal, he would like to have over. It was an unscreened shot from the top of the left face-off circle. As you can tell from the scratches, Captain Crowley and Ian Duval did not suit up for the Herd. Sept. 27: Out of Town Scoreboard Since the Bisons are playing a Saturday-Sunday doubleheader this weekend, Friday night is devoted to the Out-of-Town Scoreboard. LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS 2 MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 5 Link: [LS Summary] The New-Kittens-on-the-Block entered the win column to avoid being shut-out in the pre-season. The H0rny Ones need to be concerned. After last year's debacle they are already 0-4-0. The Kittens built a 4-0 lead before the Viagra kicked in. But it was too little, too late. The closest they git was 4-2, despite outshooting MRU 14-4 in the 3rd period. Lethbridge takes their 0-4-0 record to the States next weekend to play Minnesota and Minnesota State. Meanwhile, the Kittens are done, having played only 3 pre-season games. They open next weekend at home against Sask. SIMON FRASER CLAN 2 UBC THUNDERBIRDS 6 Link: [LS Summary] The Tweety-Birds took game one of the double-header in convincing fashion. It is nice that they play at least one BCIHL team, but one would think they would be better off facing some better opposition. Last weekend, once Ian Duval was injured on Friday, they played one short on Saturday. This is the last weekend of play before the regular season starts next weekend with a home series against the Evil Monkeys. Are the Bisons ready for the challenge? The Blahs were once the dominant team in the CIS, back when Tom Watt was their coach. Back then a player could stay on the team for 8-9 years if they were getting a PhD. In recent decades they have become very average. Last season they went 15-15-8 overall, and were 24th in the OHT35. This is how I broke down their season: Is a trip out west their idea of seeking a tougher schedule? What I would like to see from the Bisons is a return to the line-up from the players scratched last weekend: 2 Dane Crowley D 10 Brendan Rowinski F 17 Austin Lauder F 27 Jordan DePape F 28 Reid McLeod F Those players, with Ian Duval, would significantly raise the level of the team. It is funny that neither team from Banjoland will be in action this weekend. It must be in commemoration of St. Cletus Day. (He's the one who brought the first outhouse to Saskatchewan!) ELSEWHERE: ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS (0-0-0, 9-0-0) at CALGARY DINOSAURS (0-0-0, 3-4-1) The Monkeys swept the Bedrock Boys in a pair of exhibition games earlier on this year. These two games will give them 11 pre-season exhibition games, which must be some sort of a record. Can they sweep? The Friday game will be played in the Town of Bedrock and Saturday's rematch will be in St. Albert. Last year's bottom two teams have started winless through 5 combined losses. Not a good sign. They beat Trinity Western and then split 2 games against ACAC teams, losing to SAIT 5-3 and beating the new team from Red Deer 3-2 in OT. The Tweety-Birds have yet to play. The Clown really get up for these games. Still, they always get outshot by a large margin and pray they have a hot goaltender. The teams have played 4 games over the last 2 years. In 2011 each team won a game by a 3-1 score. In 2012 UBC won 8-0 and 4-3. Sept. 22: Out-of-Town Scoreboard UPEI PANTHERS 1 OTTAWA GEEGEES 3 Link: [UPEI Story] This game was played Saturday in UQTR's tournament. Both teams won on Friday, so this win gave Ottawa the title. Based on last year's performances that stands as quite a surprise. Final standings: Ottawa 1st, PEI 2nd, Moncton 3rd, and UQTR 4th. ACADIA AXEMEN 4 SAINT MARY'S HUSKIES 4 DALHOUSIE TIGERS 4 ST. FRANCIS-XAVIER X-MEN 3 (in overtime) Link: [Acadia Story - covering both games] This was Day 2 of the tournament. The 3rd place game between the Cajuns and SMUskies was called due to an injury. Dal-Lousy took the title with an OT win, in what must also be considered a surprise. You know what else would be a surprise? [LeagueStat Summary] It was tough spending a sunny Saturday afternoon indoors watching a hockey game. I would have much preferred the traditional Saturday night game, but there you go. Also, this year's Saturday games are going to be at 6:00 p.m. so I need to get used to this. I personally dislike the 6:00 p.m. start time. The Goldeyes have done it for 2 years now. It is hard to get your Saturday afternoon done that 1 hour earlier. I digress. The Bisons went with the same line-up as Friday, except that Ian Duval was not dressed and Joe Caligiuri had the day off. Going into the season my concern was with scoring. However, with 10 goals in 2 games maybe that ought not to be a concern. Perhaps injuries are the bigger concern. Other than the goaltender switch, the Bisons never dressed any of Friday's scratches. Even though Duval was sidelined they played with a 19 man roster rather than activate a player from the sub list. Last year I saw enough of the Feline Hillbillies to get sick of them. They came here in pre-season, regular season, and playoffs for a weekend double-header. They looked like crap in all 6 games. While they have not made any earth-shattering additions, they have added bona fide defencemen. Last year they had forwards forced to drop back. This year they are tougher to play against, although they remain several notches below the Bisons in calibre. However, Regina over-achieved something fierce last year. I was constantly shocked to look at the out-of-town scoreboard and see them pick up points here and there such that they left the New-Kittens-on-the-Block and the H0rny Ones in the dust. Even though the Bisons did not trash the Cats like last year, they did ring up two convincing wins. The defence, even without Captain Crowley, limited them to mostly low quality shots from the perimeter. Here's how it went. The Bisons got off to a quick 2-0 lead, with goals by newcomers Aaron Lewadniuk and Taylor Dickin within the first 3 minutes. Lewadniuk's goal was a conversion of a nice passing play. Dickin's was a solo effort after he was tripped on a delayed penalty call. Once ahead the Bisons seldom made any venturous offensive plays. The intermission appeared to get the Bisons re-charged. Although the 2nd period was scoreless, the Bisons had dozens of nice passing plays which generated quality shots on goal. Each line was quite effective in that regard. Despite the lack of goals, the Bisons generated their most sustained offence in this period. The 3rd period was much like the first. The Bisons scored two early goals within 3 something. Paul Ciarelli and Jesse Paradis converted passing plays. Then the Bisons went into a shell, playing very conservatively and generating few shots. There was also a steady flow of penalties which never helps a game to flow. Regina's only goal was from d-man Mark Schneider during a 2-man advantage mid-way through the 3rd. The screen shot elluded Joey Rewucki, a rookie goaltender coming from the Selkirk Steelers. He made 14 saves in the period. Starting goaltender Deven Dubyk made 19 saves over two periods. They both looked sharp and would appear to be good backups for Caligiuri. The three stars were Dickin, Lewadniuk, and Dubyk. Clearly, it was a good day for the new blood. The Bisons are now 4-3-1 in the pre-season, and Regina is a respectable 3-3-0. Next up for the Bisons is a home doubleheader against the Toronto Varsity Blues on homecoming weekend. Saturday's game goes at 7:00 (well after the Bison football game) and Sunday goes at 1:00. Some names popped up from the European tour. Arrivals: 3. Pierre Landry - defence - Briercrest Clippers - EP Stats - He played just one year at Briercrest after having played in the MJHL, mostly with Waywayseecappo. Although he scored the opening goal, he is mostly a defensive type. They have only 8 d-men on the roster so I assume he will be kept in a back-up role for the 6 veterans they have. 8. Jory Coates - forward - Pembina Valley Twisters - EP Stats - It is not often that grads of the MMJHL get a look for the Bisons. A few years back two goaltenders were vying for the role of 3rd string goaltender. But this 6'6" late bloomer could be a catch, especially if he sticks it out for 5 years and keeps improving. When he graduated from Midget he played two seasons bouncing between the Neepawa Natives of the MJHL and the Twisters of the MMJHL. In 2011-12 he stuck it out with the Twisters and scored 3 goals in 40 games, and none in 6 playoff games. But last year he caught fire as the season wore on. With 24 goals in 45 games then had 13 in 17 playoff games as he led the Twisters to a surprise championship. 9. Andrew Dunsmore - forward - St. Vital Victorias - EP Stats - He is another MMJHL grad and has not played since 2010-11. He never scored in 33 MMJHL games spread over 2 seasons. The question is whether they'll keep all 15 forwards around. 26. Justin Dalebozik - forward - Steinbach Pistons - EP Stats - He was acquired by the Pistons mid-way through last season and was a factor in them going from below average to a shocking provincial championship. The question is whether he can contribute some goals. 28. Reid MacLeod - forward - Sacred Heart University - EP Stats - He played for the Stonewall Flyers senior league team as he red-shirted last year. He peaked as a junior in 2007-08 when he scored 47 goals in 57 games for the Flin Flon Bombers. But the next year he plummeted to 13 goals in 49 games playing for the same team. In 3 seasons at Sacred Heart he had 8 goals in 53 games. Could he regain his scoring touch? He did have 19 goals in 19 senior league games last year. Departures: 3. Eric Mestery - The former 2nd round draft choice of the Washington Capitals appears to have left hockey again. He retired in 2010 when still a junior in the WHL before making a brief comeback with the Selkirk Steelers in 2011, and then another with the Bisons last year. 6. Brodie Melnychuk - The former Wheatie was a Christmas newcomer who stabilized the defence last year. He does not appear to be involved in organized hockey this year. Back to the game at hand, since the game was in the afternoon the only fans there were people playing hookey. It very much had the feel of an exhibition game for that reason. On the down side, Ian Duval was injured late in the 2nd period on a knee clip. Hopefully he will be available for the start of the season. In general, the Kittens rarely generated sustained pressure. One goal was a deflection of a point shot, one a breakaway which arose from an ill-conceived line change by a d-man, and one point shot that Caligiuri would like to have back. The Bisons will be challenged to score this year. They have lost Blair Macaulay, Tyler Dittmer, Matthew Lowry, Del Cowan, and James Henry. One factor, though, is that returning players often improve. Craig Scott, Jesse Paradis, and Dylan Kelly are now 2nd year players and all seemed to be more effective and had strong games. Paradis was the only one of those to get regular ice time last year, in fact Scott was usually a scratch. Paradis was the 2nd star. Kelly was used on both the PK and PP. One surprise was that newcomer Luke Paulsen, recruited as a defenceman, was used as a forward. And he was so effective that he was named 1st star. The U of M site, since being re-minted, has no updates and in fact has lost the story on Macaulay turning pro and the scores from their European tour. This makes it time for an annual rant: Why don't CIS teams get their websites going in advance of the pre-season? Should they not have training camp rosters available? Could they not have even a small story on the opening weekend? This would be an easy first step towards getting media coverage in their local marketplaces. Here's where the websites stand: Manitoba - The roster page has deleted all 5th year players from last year. It still includes last year's 3rd and 4th years who graduated and does not include any new recruits. Before the website was "modernized" the schedule page had the scores from the European tour. Those have been removed and they have not even added a story on the tour. The roster page does tell us that Tyler Dittmer is now a conditioning coach, along with Riley Dudar. Alberta - The schedule page has a link to a linescore of each game so far, and a story on the Oiler game. Their roster page is not available yet. Calgary and Lethbridge - The schedule pages are updated but are without links (which may change this weekend. The roster pages are 2012-13. Regina - They have their 2013-14 roster looking complete. They have 8 defencemen listed, which after being short-handed last year will be a luxury. The schedule page deleted a previously scheduled game with Weyburn but appears up-to-date. Saskatchewan - I do not know what their site is doing. When you go there you get all their players' dopey faces but no actual site. So who knows. They must be wiping their butts on the carpet again.

But Regina is hosting 6 of 8 CW teams this weekend. That would be nice to see. I would love tio sit through 3 hockey games per day.

So now the records of the three teams to see action so far are: Alberta 3-0-0 Manitoba 2-1-1 Calgary 0-2-0 There was also a piece in the Edmontown Examiner on new Monkey goaltender Luke Siemens. Although he has great credentials, it is hard to see him improving the Monkey goaltending. Kurtis Mucha stole games for them last year, including one memorable night in Manitoba. There is no announcement yet from Sask on their recruits. However, we get word from Fort Mac that one of the Keyano Huskies' goaltenders is shifting to another pack of mutts. Sept. 6: Monkeys win, More recruiting news The Selkirk Steelers website announced that their former goaltender Joey Rewucki is attending the U of M on a scholarship. I did see his name on the roster/stats pages when the Bisons faced Rosenheim (see post from Aug. 27th) and posted his stats. And, the GoBisons.ca website is being renovated. One effect is that bookmarked links to specific pages no longer work. It appears that they are trying to add content to the new site bit-by-bit. The site is one of those awkward new ones where your screen is full of banners and menus that appear and vanish and basically just leave room for an inch of actual content to be visible at any one time. Sept. 4: Macaulay Goes Pro, Domestic Pre-Season Begins Blair Macaulay, the Bisons' top scorer, and one of the best players in the CIS, has signed a pro deal. He and his brother, Scott Macaulay, are headed off to the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL, an Edmonton Oilers affiliate. Both played for the Winnipeg Saints. Thereafter, Scott went to the NCAA and Blair to the WHL. The quote tells just how good he was: What it does not say is that he started as a 4th-liner and penalty killer and quickly moved his way up in the order. Check out the Elite Prospects stats page. The 23 goals in 28 regular season games in 2011-12 was quite incredible. I saw him at a Bison workout during the team's European tour. However, I also believe I saw Chris Benias and perhaps other former Bisons there as well. Whether the team thought he might return is something I just don't know. [- 3rd not yet posted] The Bisons have played many things. They have played several types of animals, like Monkeys, Pronghorns, Beavers, Badgers, Bears, and Mavericks. And mythological ones like Thunderbirds and Griffins, and extinct ones like Dinosaurs. Not to forget birds like Ooks and Hawks, or canines like Thunderwolves and two kinds of Huskies. The felines have been abundant, including Bobcats, Lions, Tigers, and two colours of Cougars. They even played two colours: Reds and Blues. In a celestial sense they have faced North Stars, Starbulls, and once even Cyclones. For people they have faced Nor'Westers and Wesmen, Fighting Sioux and Redmen, 99ers, Trojans, Patriotes, and even Cannibals. Transportation modes have also been encountered, like Clippers and Trucks. They once faced the Jets, and later the Mooses. But until today they had never faced Gooses! None of the links tells much about the Bison game. They were down 0-2 early then scored to go into the 1st intermission down 1-2. They then dominated the 2nd (with 2 goals) and 3rd (with 3 goals) periods. Italian hockey is short on statistical links so I may never find the line-ups, goaltenders, or even scorers for the tour. In the end, the Bisons go 2-1-1 on the tour. Even when short staffed, they should beat teams from the OBL and INL (which they did) and have tight games against the DEL2 (which they did in Saturday's shootout against Fischtown). Now the Euro tourists will come home and join the group training at the Max Bell. As for the tournament opponents, Neumarkt/Egna are happy that they went to overtime against Ritten/Renon, a team from a higher league. Fischtown had two wins in shootouts. It seems that Ritten/Renon is also happy with Chris Mason, Travis Ramsay, and their other new recruits, who all played key roles. The Bisons next play in Hillbillyland where the bulk of the CW teams will converge for a mix-match of exhibition games. Actually, it would be nice to be able to see so many teams in one venue. The Herd will face the Bedrock Boys on Friday, Sept. 13 and the Evil Monkeys on Saturday, Sept. 14. The home debut will be against the Regina Cougars on Sept. 20-21 with 2:00 p.m. starts both days. The pre-season will conclude with home games against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sept. 27-28.

[Bison Schedule Page] According to the Klostersee website, the last word on the game was cancelled due to an ice plant problem. However, on the Bison site they have the score without any link to a story or summary. A web search revealed nothing. Klostersee is on Pointsreak for regular season only. So I am unable to say what the Bisons did and if they remain short-staffed.

Aug. 28: Bison Practice So I popped in at the Max Bell to take my son skating and instead of public skating there was "Bison Men's Practice" on the board. Since it was so hot outside we wanted to check out the ice and, indeed, there was a Bison men's hockey practice, featuring 2 goaltenders and 9 skaters. That explains the short-staffed squad in Europe. I could not identify everybody. But Blair Macaulay and Dane Crowley had numbers on their helmets making them identifiable. I also thought I saw alumni Chris Benias out there. How many short guys with a #17 helmet are out there? There should be plenty of competition for spots when the two camps come together.
