  1. Nov 1: CW Teams Will Play! Finally, some news about hockey games has broken out! The Team Canada Junior camp is starting earlier than usual (Nov 16th) because the likelihood is that none of the players will have played any games prior to camp. And blended into the camp are SIX games against CW teams, the Evil Monkeys, Bedrock U, and the Bluegars. The Monkeys' games are November 28th and 29th. TC will have 46 players in camp, meaning that their three inter-squad games will be with full rosters. At one of the links, the games against the Evil Monkeys are to be on national TV. In 2011, Alberta beat Team Denmark 5-0 and 8-3 in a pair of games. And in 2012 they beat Team Canada 4-1. Meanwhile, Calgary beat TC 6-4 in 1988, combined with Lethbridge to win 5-4 in 2006 and lose 7-4 in 2011, and combined with Lethbridge and MRU to lose 2-0 in 2012. Since CIS/USports nation-wide all-stars have participated in this series starting in 2015, the university team has a 6-5 edge over the junior team. Seems to me that preservation of amateur status would remain a big-time goal for USports and all affiliated conferences. 2. Sept 23: Manitoba Hockey Is Going! It has been a month since my last report so here is a hodge-podge of stories, announcements, and potentially news of significance as it pertains to the return of CW hockey. The recruiting news has slowed to a trickle, which makes sense because school has now started. Normally everybody would have exhibition schedules in progress and rosters for us to comment upon. No such luck this year. Several teams are not bothering to update their websites with official announcements on recruits. I saw no new LOIs registered for men's hockey since my last report. The only CW news, and it is a downer, is that the CW golf championship has been cancelled. It was slated for UBC Okanagan and British California is not allowing disease-infested easterners (out there, this includes the prairies) into the province. Links: ➤ CW: Conference golf championships cancelled due to travel restrictions There are no official, nor unofficial, announcements from the UofM on hockey. However, there are a host of stories on the football team, who are practising hard despite cancellation of their season. If football can practice, hockey can go! I have also posted a story on former Bison coach Barry Trotz, which is worth a look. Maybe one day I'll run a fresh story on former CW coaches who have made it to the NHL. Finally, the best news I have heard in a while is that the MJHL has started their exhibition season! Here's the highlights of the announcement: Links: ➤ Pique: University football teams navigate pandemic hurdles to get back on the field ➤ Free Press: Bisons take to the gridiron ➤ CBC: U Sports football navigates pandemic hurdles to get on field despite fall cancellations ➤ Global: ‘Our players are loving it’: No games is no problem for Manitoba Bisons football team ➤ Winnipeg Sun: Honesty has guided Manitoba's Trotz from Day 1 ➤ MJHL: MJHL announces 2020-21 Regular Season schedule ➤ MJHL: Schedule The Bluegars are raising funds, and seem to be getting ready for January. I found a podcast featuring Matt Alfaro, and an old photo in Cooperalls. Links: ➤ WHL: WHL Alumni Interview: Matt Alfaro, University of Calgary Dinos ➤ Spotify: WHL Podcast: Episode 4 I had previously posted details on MacEwan's recruits, but they have now issued official releases, available at the links. There are three new recruits, all of whom are transfers: - Riley Brandt (F) from RMC (OUA) via Vernon (BCJHL) - Cameron Trott (D) from Lethbridge Pronghorns (CW) via Vernon (BCJHL) and UAA (NCAA) - Ethan Price (RW) from Stony Plain (ACHW, red shirt) via Brock (OUA) Brandt has only played two games in the last two seasons but in 2017-18 scored 21-12-33 in 28 OUA games. They must be happy with three former USports players in the recruiting class. Price also has a WHL background and Trott played a half-season in the NCAA. 3. August 23: More News Another source of recruitment news is the USports Letters of Intent (LOI) page. It covers all sports and all conferences. UBC, Alberta, Calgary, Saskatchewan, and Regina have no men's hockey players listed. But Manitoba, Trinity Western, Mount Royal, and MacEwan have 5-7 players each. The lists here have the player's name and date of registration. The * denotes a player listed at Elite Prospects. Steinke's SJHL numbers were luke-warm (28-37-65 in 153 games). Ree is a big d-man whose junior career spanned 3 teams in the AJHL and one in the SJHL. It seems a lot of ACAC players see a golden chance to make the jump to the CW with GMU. It would also appear that GMU has a much stronger recruiting class than TWU. Roach and Davies are defencemen from NAIT, GMU's cross-town rival. Both were recruited from the AJHL to the ACAC when they left junior. Red Deer recruited Thudium from the Odessa Jackalopes of the NAHL (27-43-70 in 59 games in 2016-17). His ACAC career stats are 43-53-96 in 84 games. Lyons is from the Canmore Eagles of the AJHL (65-106-171 in 167 career games). Former Bison Shaq Merasty has signed once again with the Wichita Thunder in the ECHL. He is now 29 and seems to be racking up more PIMs than points. The second story is about a new First Nations league in Saskatchewan. I am not sure what calibre of league this will be. Will it be an intermediate men's league? Or an off-shoot of the infamous cash tournament circuit you may have heard about. There has been a National Aboriginal Championship for years. We'll see. 4. AUGUST NEWS & NOTES Normally we would be ankle deep in recruitment news and the various additions to exhibition schedules would be flowing at this time of the year. Instead we are witnessing recruitment news and a heavier than usual flow of players from university to pro. The obvious reason for this state of affairs is the virus thing you may have heard about. So let's start there, because that affects when we will next see live hockey, then move into other news and notes. The MJHL is getting prepped for a full season, with an exhibition season in September and a regular season in October. The linked story has the highlights of the plan, and has a link to a 14 page PDF document with all the details covering every minute detail down to travel, meals, and hotels. This sort of guideline is likely very close to what USports teams will need to implement. Also, former Bison all-star forward Kevin Saurette (an MBA) is now the MJHL Commissioner, taking over from Kim Davis. Links: ➤ MJHL: MJHL announces return to hockey for 2020-21 ➤ Pembina Valley On-line: Sportsbeat - MJHL Commissioner Kevin Saurette (audio) ➤ Game On: Davis Retires, Saurette to Be New Commissioner of the MJHL ➤ Leah Hextall at Global: Hextall on Hockey: the MJHL’s new commissioner The Monkeys are back after the world's shortest ever hiatus. None had a scoop on the dynamics that led to their change of heart. The original announcement was based upon funding shortfalls, rather than health concerns. The eight announced new recruits are also listed at Elite Prospects and are: - Arjun Atwal (F) from Sherwood Park Crusaders (AJHL) - Luke Coleman (F) from Lethbridge Pronghorns (CWUAA) - Connor Gutenberg (F) from Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL) - Dakota Krebs (D) from Calgary Hitmen (WHL) - Max Patterson (F) from Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL) - Matt Quigley (D) from Portland Winterhawks (WHL) - Ryan Schoettler (D) from Prince George Cougars (WHL) - Zach Wytinck (D) from Regina Pats (WHL) Coleman is a transfer from the now-defunct Horny Ones. He is a 2nd year player, coming off a 12-8-20 stats line in 28 games last year. He played his junior for the Calgary Hitmen. So 7-out-of-8 were from the WHL. Dino grad Kodie Curran has signed an NHL deal. He finished a 5-year career in 2014-15 then was a late-season depth player for Hartford in the AHL. He then split a season between the AHL and ECHL before a 4-year stint in Scandinavia, with one season in Denmark, one in Norway, and two in Sweden. He will be turning 31 during the season, so this is the ultimate late-bloomer scenario. Why would the Ducks gamble on him? He was the Swedish league MVP last year! They have two transfers from Lethbridge, just one recruit from the WHL, and four Junior A grads from three different leagues. - Conner McDonald (D) from Kelowna Rockets (WHL) - Logan Foster (F) from Humboldt Broncos (SJHL) - Tian Rask (F) from Melfort Mustangs (SJHL) - Michael Clarke (F) from Lethbridge Pronghorns (CWUAA) - Jackson Caller (D) from Vernon Vipers (BCJHL) - Dorrin Luding (G) from Winkler Flyers (MJHL) - Dan Gatenby (D) from Lethbridge Pronghorns (CWUAA) Links: ➤ UBC: T-Birds add to strong recruit class ➤ Elite Prospects: UBC Transactions ➤ Vernon Morningstar: Vernon Vipers blueliner signs Canadian university deal ➤ Discover Humboldt: LISTEN PODCAST: Michael Clarke Joins UBC After Lethbridge Hockey Program Cancellation The Banjo-Mutts have yet to announce recruits, but they have a slightly new set of logos. They have not issued an official announcement on recruits, but Elite Prospects has compiled a list of four names, all of whom have an affinity for fire hydrants: - Jaxan Kaluski (F) from Swift Current Broncos (WHL) - Parker Gavlas (D) from Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL) - Ty Prefontaine (D) from Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL) - Dawson Holt (F) from Vernon Vipers (BCJHL) Links: ➤ UofS: Huskie Athletics unveils updated logos ➤ Elite Prospects: UofS Transactions The Holy Trinity have no official announcement but Elite Prospects has compiled a list: - Jake Jurgeneit (D) from Yarmouth Mariners (MJAHL) - Travis Walton (F) from Nanaimo Clippers (BCJHL) - Jeremy Klessens (F) from Drayton Valley Thunder (AJHL) - Josh Boelema (F) from Briercrest College (ACAC) - Landon Fuller (D) from Vernon Vipers (BCJHL) - Connor Vermeulen (D) from Carnduff Red Devils (BSHL SrAA) It is odd that those six players finished in last year in five different leagues. 5. June 9: News and Notes The biggest story of the off-season is the unfortunate demise of the Horny Ones. This loss is somewhat blunted by the fact that TWU is joining the CW from the BCIHL and Macewan is coming from the ACAC. But coming a year after they hosted the U-Cup makes me wonder why they never devoted fundraising for the meat and potatoes, instead of the fancy dessert. Links: ➤ Global News: University of Lethbridge committee to explore future of cancelled Pronghorns hockey programs ➤ UofL: Budget constraints spell end for University of Lethbridge hockey programs Speaking of Holy Trinity, their coach is Barret Kropf from Estevan, Saskatchewan. I found a local news story about him. Links: ➤ Estevan Mercury: Former Estevan resident preparing team for big jump The biggest news on a national level is the cancellation of the fall sports (e.g. football) and the announcement that there would be no league play in CW hockey (amongst other sports) until the new year. Earlier, they had announced plans for a 20-game season in hockey (down from 28) and 5 games in football (down form 8). This leaves maybe 10 weeks for a regular season and playoffs, if they want to keep the U-Cup in mid-March. I wouldn't be surprised to see playoffs truncated, perhaps confined to a single weekend conference tournament. That is all conjecture, though. So no Vanier Cup, nor national tournaments of any type, in football, soccer, rugby, or field hockey. I see that UVic's soccer teams are looking at an exhibition season for the new year. This may have applicability for other teams in other sports as well. The Star-Phoenix story points out that we'll be waiting until October 8th for news on the January season, and the door is left open for provincial regulation. IMO, this makes an "unofficial" season for many teams a possibility. Henry got a boat-load of awards, including top defenceman in the CW, first team all-star in the CW, and second team all-star in USports. UBC have qualified for the CW semi-finals in 2007, 2014, 2015, and now 2020. Before this relative splurge of success, their previous semi-final appearance was 1990. So there will be celebration on the coast over this. UBC built a 3-0 lead in the 1st period, and led 4-2 after two. MRU rallied with a big 3rd period effort, where they outshot the T-irds 16-4. However they needed a goal with one second left in regulation to force overtime. Austin Vetterl scored UBC's winning goal and Rylan Toth stopped 33 of 37 shots for the win. MRU went with Wyatt Hoflin, who gave up 3 goals on 6 shots in 9 minutes before being yanked. Riley Morris stopped 19 of 21 in relief. However, the Bisons managed just 14 shots on the night. And, once again, it was a short-handed goal that set them back. You have to do better than .500 with a man advantage. Riley Lamb again took the loss (stopping 30 of 32). The Dinos will travel to Saskatown next weekend to face the Banjo-Mutts. That should be a good series. There will be time for off-season cogitations on the Bison roster for 2020-21. This year they had loads of turnover, including solid recruits on defence (3 WHL grads) and goal (2 WHL and one MJHL). What they need is a group of 3 WHL forwards so they can have reliable scoring, forecheck lots, and stop those short-handed goals against. They also need to rack up some wins against the bottom half the league. This year they were 4-5-3 against those teams. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD U.B.C. The formula for an underdog is simple: win the close game to force a game 3, and hope you have the fewer injuries. This is not too much of a stretch. The Bisons are 2-2-0 against Bedrock this year, and 11-8-1 over the past 5 years. Will Fred and Barney don their Buffalo Lodge hats and cheer the Bisons to victory in Bedrock? Will Manitoba get the karma edge after the wild conference final playoff game? To remind you, the Bisons mounted a big-time comeback and when they were down one point on the final play, they missed an attempted two-point conversion. The Dinos went on to win the national title. But the gutsy decision won the Bisons a lot of fans. The keys to the series: Bison PP/PK – My infamous chart shows how they have been victimized by shorthanded goals this year. They are -21, Calgary is +5. Goaltending – Bedrock starter Matthew Greenfield has been gone since January. However Brodan Salmond has contributed nice numbers (9-2-3, 2.40 GAA, .900 S%). The Bison edge would be that they have co-starters and one of them needs to be hot. The Bison numbers have tumbled the last 4 weeks, but Tyler Brown and Riley Lamb are both still at or over .900 S%. Who will have the big series? - The Dinos have Matt Alfaro, the CW's leading scorer, who went 1-7-8 in 4 games against the Bisons. On the other hand, sophomore Colton Veloso has finished strong and had 3 goals in the January series against Bedrock. ELSEWHERE IN THE CW U.B.C. Here are the CW stats on shorthanded play this year: These stats are what has prevented the Bisons from moving into a top-4 type of team. Although the team made great progress this year, this is the area to address in the upcoming playoffs and next year as well. They scored 21 powerplay goals, but gave up 11 shorthanded goals. The other way on the PK they gave up a league-worst 32 powerplay goals and scored just one shorthanded goal in reply. That's a -21 overall. So even strength they were outscored just 63 to 54. A -9 ratio should be a much better record than 9-15-4. The win gave the Monkeys 1st, and the Bisons 6th. 18. Jan 31: Bisons Robbed in Overtime After last Saturday's matinee I had to take a bit of an all-star break to get some work done. So here we are back at it again. Quick blurb on last Saturday's game: The Bisons fell behind Regina 5-0 on a mixture of bad breaks, opportunistic goal-scoring, and poor play before outshooting them 24-2 in the 3rd period and falling short. Now, on to the opening night of the penultimate weekend of the CW season .... The Bisons outshot them 36-27 on the night! However, there was a major downside when Sask's Sam Ruopp blind-sided Jonah Wasylak with a high-stick head-shot. He was given 5 minutes and tossed with a match penalty. I would not bet on him being available any time soon. Hopefully, they have a forward available in sub in for Wasylak. Once again, the Bisons were victimized by a shorthanded goal against. This has been a problem all year. The Bisons had the only even-strength goal in the game, and in fact had it not been for powerplays there would have been virtually no offence from the Mutts. The final powerplay goal arose from a neutral zone trip by Adam Henry on what would have been a very borderline call, or perhaps an offsetting embellishment call, even in regulation. Taran Kozun stopped 34 of 36 for the win, and Tyler Brown stopped 24 of 27 in the loss. The rematch goes Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. After the penalties on Friday, I wouldn't be shocked to see some battles happening. There are only 6 regular season games remaining for every team in the CW. After this weekend, every team will have one home and one away series. The Bisons could officially clinch a playoff berth this weekend. They are 3 points ahead of UBC and 5 points up on Regina, and must only finish ahead of one of them. (Lethbridge are 9 points back and I don't see them getting 9 points in 6 games.) The Banjo-Cats had an amazing 4-game winning streak come to a screeching halt last weekend. So was the sudden streak an anomoly? Or have the Kittens turned the corner? Of concern to the Moonshine Drinkers ought to be that goaltender Brandon Holtby's bubble burst. His season stats line is still really good (6-8-2, 2.76 GAA, .917 S%), and way better than the other two (Curtis Meger and Dawson MacAuley) combine for 0-5-1, 6.92 GAA, .811 S%. They need goaltending to stand a chance. Their top scorer (Connor Chaulk) is tied for 42nd in the CW at 5-7-12. On the Bison side, Colton Veloso has found the range. He sniped 3 goals last weekend, for 8 on the season. The young lineup has provided a balanced attack, with 9 players in double digits (Adam Henry, Devon Skoleski , Jeremey Leipsic, Keaton Jameson, Colton Veloso, Geordie Keane, Dylan Thiessen, Jonah Wasylak, and Ben Dalke). Six of those are sophomores, two are 5th years, and one is a rookie. The games on Friday night at the U of M are part of the Bell Let's Talk Promotion. Last year it was free toques! Their series totals were: - 8 goals on 67 shots by Regina - 13 goals on 113 shots by Sask - 14 goals on 104 shots by Alberta The Bluegars are almost guaranteed of a top 4 finish, and might even catch their cross-town rivals for 3rd. And what a time to go. UBC holds an annual Winter Classic game, which draws a massive crowd, and that lands on Friday. This year, the T-irds will be honouring their 1971 conference championship team, their last titlist. That team defeated the Bisons in the final. They did make it to the conference final in 1975 and 1978, during the era where the CW and GPAC were split into separate conferences. The Bisons are nicely nestled into 5th place, and seem to be tuning up for the playoffs. Meanwhile, the T-irds have now fallen out of the playoff picture, albeit just one point in arrears of 6th place. So there is massive urgency for UBC. After this weekend, they have just two home games left. As a result, the Bisons will have mighty big targets on their heads this weekend. These two split their previous series (as the Bisons have done 9 of 10 times thus far), and UBC seemed to be a decent enough team. Over the last 5 years, both sides are 9-8-1 going head-to-head. Even this year, on goals-for-and-against UBC is only a -20, while Regina is -34 and Lethbridge is -44. Not many pundits picked UBC to miss the playoffs. Since that series against the Bisons, UBC has just two wins – those being a convincing sweep of Lethbridge. However, I recently saw good portions of their games against Regina and Calgary and they seemed OK. The Birds have just one player in the CW's Top 40 scorers, Austin Vetterl (4-9-13). Manitoba has four now, including Adam Henry (6-9-15) on defence, and a trio of sophomore forwards coming into their own, namely Jeremey Leipsic (6-8-14), Devon Skoleski (4-10-14), and Keaton Jamieson (2-11-13). In goal, Birds' 3rd year Rylan Toth is a solid but unpectacular CW starter. This year he's 3-8-4, 3.03 GAA, .898 S%. Backup Patrick Dea has comparable numbers at 1-3-1, 2.67 GAA, .885 S%. Meanwhile, three rookies have given the Bisons stellar goaltending. Riley Lamb won the starter job (6-4-1, 3.11 GAA, .915 S%), then Tyler Brown wrested it away (3-5-0, 3.14 GAA, .914 S%) before Lamb jumped back in last Saturday. #3 goaltender, Jeremy Link, deserves some playing time. He had one start (against UBC) and stopped 45 of 47 shots in a loss. Brandon Holtby has emerged as a bona fide starter (6-7-1, 2.59 GAA, .920 S%). The other Cats in this fight, like the Bisons, are all by themselves in mid-table with nobody close to them. Is the Bluegar confidence shaken after mounting a solid challenge early on? Or will this allow them to retrench for the playoffs? If one team could sweep they would likely get 2nd place and the bye which goes with it, in addition to hosting the semi-final series these teams seem destined to play. The Banjo Mutts' slow start has been completely overcome. I'm not sure what to make of that Saturday night gong-show last weekend (giving up 5 goals on 40 shots against Lethbridge), perhaps it was just a one-off. I did pick Bedrock U for 2nd in my pre-season picks. The Hørny Ønes have not come back well from the Christmas break, having 4 straight losses by 3 goals each. Regaining their form against the Evil Monkeys seems onerous. The closest the Monkeys have had to a slump is two losses with 5 goals against in each (against Manitoba and Saskatchewan) in a 5-game stretch. In my estimation the Hørny Ønes would be quite happy to pick up even one point in this set. Is ***** Power the big thing for the 20's? Well, before get too excited all these wins came against the other bottom-of-the-table teams. Still, all the Banjo-Cats need to do is match UBC and Lethbridge and they'll have their first playoff berth since 2013. In this one, the Kittens did not shut down the T-irds as on Friday night. Instead they relied on Brandon Holtby to stop 41 of 42 shots for the win. UBC switched to Patrick Dea in net, and he stopped 31 of 33 in defeat, still a good night's work. In the opening frame, UBC led 1-0 after outshooting Regina 13-6. In the 2nd, Regina turned the tables, outshooting UBC 10-5 and it was tied 1-1. UBC dominated the 3rd period and 1st overtime, with a 24-16 lead in shots. However, in 3-on-3 Regina scored on the only shot. It certainly was no Fantasy Island for either coach. After two periods, it was a 4-4 game, and Sask had outshot Lethbridge 34-28. The Mutts exploded in the 3rd period to turn a toss-up into a route. Sask switched goaltenders, starting Travis Child. He stopped 35 of 40 shots for the win. Lethbridge started Taz Burman, who stopped 32 of 38 in defeat, Jack Burgart stopped 11 of 12 in relief.
