March 16, 2024: SQUIRRELS GET BACK-TO-BACK SHUTOUTS
TORONTO METROPOLITAN BOLD 0

➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : USports
➤ USports: UNB dominates TMU 7-0 to advance to U CUP finals
➤ UNB: REDS Advance To U Cup Final, Beat Bold 7-0 (with boxscore)
➤ TMU: Bold thrashed by undefeated REDS in semi-final of National Championship (with boxscore)
Quick Summary
UNB: S. McGurn (05:04 1st), K. McCallum (06:58 1st), C. Kammerer (15:47 1st), A. Keating (02:12 2nd), K. Landry (08:12 2nd), C. Baber (00:38 3rd), J. Willms (14:38 3rd)
TMU: none
Goal: UNB: Richard (22 shots, 22 saves); TMU: Edmonds (48 shots, 41 saves)
This was over early. The UNBREDS outshot The Bald 24-3 in the 1st period and racked up a 3-0 lead. They have outscored their opponents 11-0 over two games. They also have yet to lose this year. Is Vegas offering odds on the final?

Quick Summary
McG: X. Fortin (14:14 1st), A. Gagnon (07:56 2nd), A. Gagnon (15:07 2nd), E. Uba (19:12 2nd)
UQTR: S. Lafrance (08:13 1st), E. Cournoyer (17:01 1st), W. Dumoulin (07:35 2nd), V. Milot-Ouellet (19:29 2nd), C. Frenette (16:19 3rd)
Goal: McG: Shank (28 shots, 23 saves); UQTR: Gravel (29 shots, 25 saves)
This unofficial RSEQ championship was quite an even game. However, neither team had the kind of goaltending needed to pull of a monumental upset against The Squirrels. UQTR built a 3-1 lead, but then McGill stormed back to lead 4-3. The winning goal was scored in the last 4 minutes, but then McGill never really got their goaltender out for any length of time.

Goal: Monc: Adam (23 shots, 18 saves); UQTR: Gravel (34 shots, 33 saves)
In the battle of French schools, UQTR scored early and often and won this one going away. To be fair, the Eggs rallied and outshot UQTR. In the end, teams need goaltending to win here and only UQTR had it in this matinee.

UBC: J. Williams (14:31 1st), T. Rask (16:07 2nd)
Goal: McG: Shank (37 shots, 35 saves); UBC: Schwebius (14 shots, 11 saves)
Watching these teams peck away at each other, I had the notion that the T-irds would ultimately prevail. The score was always tight, but the play was mostly one way. The shots were 15-6 in the 2nd, and 14-2 in the 3rd, both in favour of UBC. Safe to say that UBC never got a save when they needed one.

Mr. Slate is not going to like this Bedrock U losing streak. That’s 13 straight U-Cup losses. Here’s the list:
1986 - Western Regional best-of-three
U.Q.T.R. 9 Calgary 5
U.Q.T.R. 8 Calgary 5
1988
York 4 Calgary 3
1990
Moncton 5 Calgary 4

Guelph 4 Calgary 1
1996
Waterloo 5 Calgary 2
2000
U.Q.T.R. 3 Calgary 2
Alberta 4 Calgary 2
2011
New Brunswick 2 Calgary 1
Western Ontario 3 Calgary 2
2015
Guelph 3 Calgary 1
2023
U.P.E.I. 4 Calgary 2
2024
T.M.U. 2 Calgary 1 (2ot)
This losing streak probably impressed Brendan Shanahan. I imagine he was in the Bedrock locker room with a fistfull of contracts.
The Dinos had a slight edge in play through regulation time, outshooting The Bald 37-24. Overtime was just the opposite, with The Bald outshooting Bedrock 21-14. The Dinos had 4 of the 5 powerplays, and scored on one.
Thursday’s games, and the rest of the tournament, can be streamed at CBC Gem, CBC.ca, or CBC’s YouTube channel.

Goal: Calg: Tetachuk (36 shots, 31 saves); UBC: Schwebius (25 shots, 22 saves)
These late night games on work nights are tough! UBC built a 4-1 lead after two periods. Bedrock U mounted a 3rd period, closing the gap to 4-3 within 8 minutes of play. However, the game-tying goal was not to be. Make no mistake about it, UBC was by far the better team in this series. (Although not so much all season long.)
In any event, both sides are off to the U-Cup. Can the Dinos finally win a game there? More on that as the tournament approaches.

The T-irds only won 2-1, but they were by far the better team in this one. They almost doubled Bedrock U’s shots total (41 to 21) and tripled it in the 3rd period (15 to 5). That’s right, a tie game entering the 3rd and the Dinos had only 5 measly shots. There was only one powerplay in the game, and UBC scored on it. Sunday night’s rubber match should be worth a view.

UBC: J. Williams (13:43 1st), S. Huo (14:53 2nd)
Goal: Calg: Tetachuk (36 shots, 34 saves); UBC: Schwebius (21 shots, 16 saves)
This one started late, due to UBC hosting men’s and women’s finals and the women’s game going into OT.
The T-irds looked very good in the 1st period and were full grades for a 1-0 lead. But then came the 2nd period from Hell, or Bedrock. The Dinos scored 5 goals in just over 6 minutes, on just 9 shots in the period. The Dinos were 2-for-3 on the powerplay, which always helps.
The 3rd period had a little chippy BS but was largely uneventful. I was asleep before I could post a report and, with a busy Saturday, have the latest post possible right here.

Being a late-night west coast game, I could not post afterwards. In any event, Alberta still has not posted a game story as I write this.
This was an extremely defensive game, with sparse scoring chances. The T-irds held a 3-0 lead entering the 3rd period, then held the Monkeys to just four shots in the 3rd. The “big names” recruited by the Monkeys never did much.

The crazy thing about this game was that the Evil Monkeys never posted more than 5 shots in a period. Not at all like the old days, eh?
Also, there were two long delays due to arena malfunctions. One was a loose board, and the other was an ice divot which was repaired with a fire extinguisher. Not what you'd expect from such a fancy arena.
Sam Huo scored a hat-trick when UBC was trailing 2-1 to give them the lead in this one. He also scored on Friday, and had 14 goals and 19 assists in 24 games during the regular season.
I think I would sooner watch the Calgary stream than the UBC stream next weekend. To get this, the Monkeys must win. On the other hand, an Ape-free U-Cup would be a nice change.

This cross-town series started early on Thursday night and the game stories, all-star selection stories, and summaries are all linked. This was actually a very decisive win for Bedrock U. The first period was wild, ending in a 2-2 draw. The Dinos dominated the second, outshooting the Bluegars 19-7 and taking a 4-2 lead into the third. MRU outshot the Dinos 9-3 in the third, but with a two goal deficit those 9 shots were not going to throw much of a scare.

Goal: MRU: Sims (31 shots, 27 saves); Calgary: Tetachuk (24 shots, 21 saves)
This was a must-win for the Bluegars and, as has been the case every year, they came up just a wee bit short. They were leading 1-0 and on a PP when they surrendered a shorthanded goal. From then on, Bedrock U had the better of the play. However, a nice comeback, capped with a game-tieing goal with 26 seconds left, forced overtime.
This means that of the two CW Tier 1 teams eliminated so far, both were sent packing in overtime.
Bedrock U will be going back to the nationals, where they are currently on a 0-8 run. Their last win was 6-3 over Brandon in 1981.

The Evil Monkeys took control of this one in the third period, which is all I was able to watch. A 1-1 nip-and-tuck battle became a routine 4-1 victory. Can the T-irds stave off elimination?
UBC would host Calgary in the final if they win this series, whilst Alberta would head south should they win this.

Of the eight quarter-final series taking place across the country, this will be the one and only one heading to a rubber match. This was an extremely well-played match. The Banjo-Mutts led 2-1 after one, the Evil Monkeys tied it in the 2nd, and then won it with the only goal of the 3rd period. Tyler Preziuso scored the tieing and winning goals. Jordan Kooy started in the Sask net, but left the game after the 1st period. Roddy Ross finished, after going the distance on Friday. Ethan Kruger has gone the distance in both games for the Monkeys. The winner will officially take on the T-irds in the semi-final round. No result in game 3 would surprise me.

I just saw the very ending of the 2nd period, and then the 3rd. It was already 4-4 when I tuned in. While the Bluegars clearly had the better of the play, the winner was netted with just over 4 minutes left. The first team website to upload a story was neither competing school. Instead, Bedrock uploaded the linked story to capitalize on the buzz. It will be Bluegars v. Bedrock next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

These two teams have met in a lot of CW championship series, and even a U-Cup final, in the past. A meeting in the quarter-finals is therefore quite unique. The Banjo-Mutts controlled the game throughout, leading 1-0 and 3-1 at the two intermissions. The Evil Monkeys do not have the magnetism they had in the past. It used to be that they would usually outshoot their opponents even in their losses.
The regular season was very close, with both series being splits. The Mutts had an OTL, which gave them a 5-4 edge on points. Both sides have recent losses to Holy Trinity, so there is a level of vulnerability here.

This is the first playoff series for the Family Guys, yet these teams have played several series back in the ACAC days. They only played once this year, and they split. That was the Bluegars’ only loss to a Tier 2 team, and the Mythical Mutants’ only win over a Tier 1 team. The Bluegars really deserved a bye this year. However, they and Alberta had 16 games against Tier 1 teams, and 12 against Tier 2 teams. The other Tier 1 teams had 12 games against Tier 1 teams and 16 against Tier 2 teams.
In any event, the Bluegars are well set up for a cross-town rivalry semi-final series against the Bedrock Dinos next week. That should be the talk of the town. I would like to see the Bluegars finally break through and appear on a national stage. The Bluegars have four PPG players (GP-G-A-Points): Connor Bouchard (26-23-34-57), Clayton Hanus (26-13-23-36), Connor Blake (28-5-25-30), and Robbie Holmes (27-15-12-27).

OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 35 ~ 2023-24 ~ POLL 19 ~ FEBRUARY 11, 2024
The final poll is here and there were two switches - Lakehead moves from C back to C+ (where they spent most of the season) and Carleton finally moves down from C+ to C.
There several anomalies this year.
In the AUS, nobody came close to challenging UIB. Either UIB is way better than usual, or nobody else could even reach the B level.
In the CW, I have never seen a distinct Tier 1 and Tier 2 as evolved this year. Not one C+ team. Are any of the B teams capable of playing at the A level?
In the OUA, the numbers skewed heavily in favour of the East over the West. That was perhaps a bit of a surprise. The OUA was 4-7 against the AUS (including 0-4 v UIB), and 4-0 against the CW (all by Lakehead, once over Regina and thrice over Manitoba).
* indicates total includes a tie game
Conf. indicates overall conference record
Conf-x indicates exhibition record within conference
USP-x indicates exhibition record within USports but outside conference
USP ∑ indicates regular season and exhibition record against USports teams
Other indicates record against non-USports teams
Total indicates record against all teams
AOA is the average of averages against each category of opponent.

The Bisons had a weak opening period, being outshot 18-2 and trailing 2-0. However, they found their form and pulled to with 3-2. It was a pair of empty-netters that put this game away for the Banjo-Mutts. Josh Paulhus had his 5th and 6th goals of the season for the Herd. Not to be outdone, Chance Petruic scored his 14th and 15th for the fire hydrant soakers. Kolby Thornton’s 41 saves boosted his save percentage for the season to .901 in his rookie season.

Backup Riley Sims finished the game and stopped all 8 shots he faced. However, he allowed 2 goals on 7 shoot-out attempts to take the loss. Quick Summary
Man: J. Arpin (19:59 1st), J. Hooker (12:40 2nd)
Sask: M. Rumsey (07:26 1st), R. Pelletier (19:50 1st), V. Loschiavo (02:34 2nd), C. Petruic (03:40 2nd), C. Hayes (04:37 2nd), V. Loschiavo (13:07 2nd), D. Holt (15:07 3rd), C. Hayes (15:50 3rd)
Goal: Man: Hawryluk (16 shots, 11 saves), Thornton (21 shots, 18 saves); Sask: Ross (27 shots, 25 saves)
This was not as bad as the score would suggest. The Banjo-Mutts were able to score goals in bunches, which magnified the results.
The Bisons outshot the Mutts 13-12 in the 1st period, but trailed 1-0 until the last 10 seconds. Sask made it 2-0 at that point, but Jackson Arpin the scored with .7 seconds left to make it 2-1.
The Mutts scored their first bundle of three goals in two minutes early in the 2nd to chase Ross Hawryluk from the Bison goal. Kolby Thornton entered the goal and gave up one more to end the period, trailing 6-2. However, a two goal bundle with less than five minutes to go inflated the scoreline.
Captain Hooker notched his 12th goal of the season, a very tidy total on a team struggling to score.

Goal: MRU: Farkas (37 shots, 33 saves); UBC: Schwebius (18 shots, 14 saves)
The Bluegars entered the night 3 points out of first, and ended two points back. They built a 3-0 lead, but then the T-irds turned it on and looked impressive in mounting a 4-3 lead of their own. However, the Bluegars scored with 37 seconds left, and took the W in a shootout.
Here’s how the top of the table could look:
- If UBC gets a point, they get 1st.
- If MRU (in regulation) and Calgary win then there’s a 3-way tie between MRU, Calgary, and UBC: I believe MRU would be 1st due to head-to-head, and if Calgary beats Regina by two then they’d get 3rd.
- If MRU and Calgary lose in reglation and Sask wins, then we have a 3-way tie for 2nd. MRU would get 2nd, Calgary and Sask would go 3rd/4th depending on plus/minus. Calgary now has a +3 lead.
- The two-way ties were addressed in the Weekend Preview.

There’s no playoff tension this weekend, but byes and match-ups are at issue. Barring a further upset by a Tier 2 team, the Banjo-Mutts will finish 4th and host the Evil Monkeys next weekend. If, however, there is an upset, the Mutts are 2-2 v. Alberta, 0-2 v. Calgary, and 1-3 v MRU.

Bedrock U could nab 2nd only if they out-point the Bluegars on the weekend. On the potential ties, other than Sask, they are 1-3 v. Alberta, 1-2-1 v. MRU, and 1-1 v. UBC (both sides having a 4-1 win). I don’t see a way to 1st place for them, but 2nd is a good chance.

These teams split their first two games, so if MRU wins both (and no more than once in OT) they will pip the T-irds for first place. But a loss or two could see them fall all the way to 4th.

What a comeback! This was Senior’s Night, as the last regular season home game for the three departing seniors, namely Chase Hartje, Colton Veloso, and Dylan Thiessen. All three of them scored, and they were the three stars.
There was no scoring in the 1st period, and the Family Guys led 1-0 after two. This set up a crazy 3rd period. Dylan Thiessen scored on the PP in the first minute. However, the Mythical Mutants scored two shorthanded goals (Brendan Boyle after 6 and Kole Gable after 13 minutes) to take a 3-1 lead. With Kolby Thornton pulled in favour of an extra attacker, Riley Zimmerman scored with 1:10 to go, and Colton Veloso tied it up with 18 seconds left.
The 3-on-3 did not produce a goal, so off to a shootout. Thornton stopped all three shooters from The Family Guys, and Hartje scored for the Bisons for the victory.

I saw a lot of this game, and it was a terrific game and a very high quality broadcast. This would have been a good U-Cup semi-final. The T-irds took a too many men penalty with 7 seconds left, and the Evil Monkeys scored the OT winner on that PP. It was a fabulous win for the Monkeys, but a quick gander at the standings will tell you that they will finish 5th unless a Tier 2 team wins a game or two.

Man: R. Zimmerman (08:58 1st), J. Paulhus (19:09 1st)
Goal: MacU: Abel (30 shots, 28 saves); Man: Hawryluk (36 shots, 29 saves)
The Bisons started out on fire. The 1st period was fast-paced and back-and-forth. There was a stretch of over 5 minutes right off the bat without a whistle.
The big problems for the Bisons were their PK and goaltending.
On the PP, MacEwan was 3-for-7 officially, but their 3rd goal was just seconds after a Bison penalty expired. The Bisons themselves were 1-for-2 on the PP, but also surrendered a shorthanded goal near the end of the game.
That 3rd goal for the Family Guys was in my opinion the back-breaker. The Bisons had just killed a penalty and MacEwan just dumped in a floater to get a faceoff in the Bison end. Hawryluk misjudged it and suddenly a tight game was then 3-1. It seemed that the Herd could never get a save when they needed one. This is unfortunate because they have been getting stellar goaltending for a while now, especially from Hawryluk. In save percentage, Hawryluk ranks 7th (.908) and Thornton ranks 10th (.898).
The win gives the Mythical Mutants their first playoff berth.

MRU: J. Senkoe (04:16 1st), C. Hanus (05:01 1st), R. Fromm-Delorme (08:48 2nd)
Goal: Sask: Kooy (29 shots, 26 saves); MRU: Farkas (38 shots, 36 saves)
I caught the ending of this one, and it was quite a battle. The Bluegars were clinging to a lead and the ending was very heated. Farkas was the star in MRU’s net, facing 38 shots. It’s looking like the top three are pulling away.

UBC: C. McNabb (11:49 1st), T. Thorpe (03:02 2nd), S. Huo (16:23 3rd), S. Atkinson (19:58 3rd)

Goal: UBC: Schwebius (34 shots, 32 saves); Alta: Kruger (27 shots, 24 saves)
After the MRU-Sask game was over, I saw the ending of this one. The Evil Mnkeys had been down 2-0, but came back to tie the game. From when I started watching (about 5 minutes left), the T-irds dominated play until they scored. There were 46 minutes in penalties, so the return match could be fiesty.

➤ McGill (Saturday late): U SPORTS HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP: Pats ground Redbirds with late-game heroics in thrilling semifinal (with boxscore)
Quick Summary
McG: S. Huard (19:55 1st), B. Frattaroli (14:04 3rd), B. Frattaroli (18:39 3rd)
TMU: E. Roberts (02:30 1st), J. Doherty (07:52 3rd)
Goal: McG: Shank (26 shots, 24 saves); TMU: Edmonds (31 shots, 28 saves)
Morning hockey is hard to watch, but it can’t be easy to play, either. With The Bald clinging to a 2-1 lead late in the 3rd, McGill scored two late goals to claim the bronze. They deserve credit for this, having played the Saturday night game. McGill has no game story posted, but they did post a late story on Saturday’s semi-final (linked).

Quick Summary
UNB: B. Gilmour (07:52 1st), C. Morgan (15:09 1st), A. Keating (04:34 3rd), I. Nurse (19:23 3rd)
UQTR: none
Goal: UNB: Richard (23 shots, 23 saves); UQTR: Gravel (32 shots, 29 saves)
So three straight shutouts for the Squirrels, and not one loss all season. Watching this one, it never seemed like UQTR had a prayer. I admit that once the Jets’ game started (around the end of the 1st period) my attention was primarily on that one. After UNB, the rest of the field, and several teams eliminated in conference playoffs, were basically of the same calibre.
