  1. Trap game, yes. The Stars were motivated - both for their playoff lives, and to bounce back from a few, ahh, "lackluster" games previous - and had a lot of spunk in their game last night, but cudos to the Flyers, they were up for it. Tip of the hat to Mason, thought he was outstanding, and Couturier, man is he an up and comer or what! All over the puck all night long!
  2. Hockey in MN = football in TX, as I understand it. Big is an understatement. Quick story, we live in a fairly small town a little N of Dallas, a AA/AAA school, but also the most successful in TX high school history - most state titles, winning streak, blah blah. My little boy started playing pee wee football in 1st grade, as most do, it's almost religion. He took up skating and got into a beginner rec league in the spring of his 3th grade year as something fun to do in the "off season". By 5th grade he was all in. Still loved his football, and an important (if not a star) player on his team, but by then he'd joined a travel hockey team, the schedule overlap was too much, can't please both coaches, they all end up unhappy... sad, but he was going to have to choose. When he didn't sign up for football his 6th grade year, I had coaches calling the house! "What do you mean... for what? for HOCKEY?!? He really needs to think about this..." I honestly think we could have turned Muslim (no disrespect) and it would have been better received! LOL No regrets, he loves it (and we bear the expense!) - and it truly is the greatest game on earth.
  3. My pleasure, hf101 I will say, one thing that always bothered me when the Stars moved down here, as much as I'm glad they did - I always pictured that 8-10 year old kid, that's the only team he's ever know, got posters on the wall, looks up to every single player... and the team up and moves on him. I know how crushed I'd have been if that happened to my team. Business, the ugly side of business. As for hockey in D/FW, it'll never be quite on par with the other big sports but it's bigger than a lot of "traditional" hockey markets realize. The crowds on TV can be deceiving, half the folks are in the many bars and plazas in the arena! It ebbs and flows, though. Popularity skyrocketed '98-mid '00's but has waned as the team struggled through Hick's bankruptcy (and it shows at the youth rinks, more older teens then younger ones right now). A little success goes a long way though, we've got a young team that's fun to watch, you can feel the excitement building again! (Funny, I do want to spread the wealth around though. I rooted for Van a few years ago 'cause "it's about time another Canadian team won it again". lol)
  4. 2 things jump to mind... 1. pandering to the "corporate" crowd. I know it's a business, it's as much about entertainment as it is sport, yada yada, but the perks and privileges lavished on the suite and lower bowl crowds, most of who don't show up until the second period and then are gone for the bars before the 3rd, while the diehards upstairs are spending entire intermissions waiting in huge lines just to get a single beer or to go pee... grrr. Shoot us a t-shirt once in a while, will ya? 2. living a little too long in the "good ol' days". '99 was awesome, Mo and Eddie and company were great, yes sir they were, but can we please stop kissing their arses now? We've got a new team now, young, exciting, some of 'em not too bad looking... I'm nostalgic too, but love the one you're with, for crying out loud! Don't get me wrong, just sayin'.
  5. Adrian, hopefully you're still following the thread! As a fellow Texan and somebody that didn't grow up with the sport, let me reiterate - Welcome to the greatest sport on earth! I didn't know the first thing about hockey when the Stars moved down here in '93, but pooled my $ with a dozen other friends (i was young and w/o a mortgage back then!) and got season tickets that first year, and incredible as it might seem... hockey (and the Stars) have displaced... gulp... football (and the Cowboys?) as my #1 sport! Stick with it, you'll love it! A couple quick newbie pointers: #1 Understand and appreciate the importance of the blue lines - getting into "the zone", or more importantly on defense getting it "out of the zone", through center ice, and into their zone is paramount to then creating (or alleviating) pressure which leads to scoring chances. Most of the game is all about getting the puck on one side or the other, and the battles that happen there, at the blue lines. (Icing is big too, but I'll leave that one up to you.) #2 Go see a game in person!! The game is fun to watch on TV, but the speed doesn't translate as well on TV. To really experience the game you've got to be there in person when you can. Houston lost the Aeros recently, but the Texas Stars play in Cedar Park (Austin suburb), that's not too far... 19 yrs old? Road trip! (And a minor league game is perfect! More intimate, and not as expensive!) The rest is up to you, it'll grow on you quickly, especially as you become familiar with various players. Enjoy!
