That's the question on everyone's minds on Tuesday afternoon as Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that the NHL has once again opened an official investigation into the Sharks forward, this time relating to him allegedly breaking the league's COVID-19 protocols. The news comes just days after the NHL closed an investigation into claims that Kane had been gambling on league games, of which the league did not find suitable enough evidence to confirm his guilt, before immediately opening another investigation into a series of serious accusations relating to his past behavior towards his estranged wife. Not much is known regarding the specifics of this new investigation, only that Kane is alleged to have broken the NHL's COVID-19 protocols and therefore jeopardized the health and safety of the San Jose Sharks players and staff. Interestingly, Kane has not reported to Sharks training camp as of the time of publication, with the team reportedly brokering an agreement with him that he should stay away "until further notice". Being the subject of two active investigations at the moment, it's unlikely that Kane suits up for the Sharks – or any team, for that matter – any time soon.

The numerous accusations came in a domestic violence restraining order application by Anna Kane as part of her divorce case in Santa Clara County, Calif. The application was filed on Tuesday. The NHL launched an investigation into the gambling allegations made in a series of Instagram posts by Anna Kane in July. FOS learned earlier this month that that probe into Kane’s alleged gambling on NHL games had stalled. An NHL spokesperson declined comment Tuesday night when FOS inquired about the sexual and domestic violence allegations. A message left with Kane’s attorney was not immediately returned. Evander Kane has played 12 seasons in the NHL and is coming off one of his most productive seasons scoring-wise with 22 goals and 27 assists in a shortened 2020-21 season. The 6-foot-3 Paul is a strong two-way player for this team and he can also take important faceoffs if Norris kicked out of the circle. No, Chris Tierney wasn’t pencilled in the lineup before camp, but if you talk to anybody, he has shown up in great shape and is determined to rebound from a bad season. He’s headed for unrestricted free agency next summer and, given his NHL experience, he might be a fit in the second-line role to start camp. If so, it wouldn’t be any surprise if Tierney started camp with sophomore superstar Tim Stuetzle on his left side and veteran Connor Brown on the right side. The third line could be speedy winger Alex Formeton playing with Colin White in the middle with veteran Tyler Ennis pushing for a contract on the right. Centre Shane Pinto, who finished the year strong last season in the 12 games he suited up for, could start on the fourth line and there’s many believe he can work his way up. Veteran Austin Watson will play a valuable role on the fourth line and there is an opening here on the wing for a young player. Among those pushing for a spot will be the likes of Parker Kelly and Egor Sokolov. Remember, though, this is all without Tkachuk in the mix and this will all change the minute he signs because he will immediately move to the first unit, which means there will have to be a realignment. At some point or another, the Senators and Tkachuk’s camp are going to get this contract settled. They’ve had several discussions and though Wednesday is a pressure point, the opening of the season isn’t until Oct. 14 against the Toronto Maple Leafs and that’s when push really comes to shove. Ideally, the Senators would like to get Tkachuk, 22, signed to a long-term contract and name him the club’s first captain since Erik Karlsson was dealt to the San Jose Sharks on Sept. 13, 2018. As noted in this space, it’s believed the Senators have offered Tkachuk an eight-year deal worth $8 million per season, which is exactly the same contract defenceman Thomas Chabot signed in 2019. It’s believed the Senators remain focused on a long-term deal to keep Tkachuk in the fold and there haven’t been any substantive talks regarding a bridge with his camp. Sure, that could change if these discussions drag on and, despite a characterization to the contrary, it’s believed they aren’t far apart. That’s a touch more than the eight-year, $62.5-million deal Andrei Svechnikov signed with the Carolina Hurricanes last month and the feeling in NHL circles is he’s comparable with Tkachuk. He was taken two picks after Svechnikov in the 2018 NHL draft and their numbers are pretty comparable. In 205 career NHL games, Svechnikov has 59 goals and 140 points. By comparison, Tkachuk has 60 goals and 125 points in 198 career games. Now, they play different styles and the Senators don’t need to be told that the rugged winger brings it every time he pulls on the jersey. Look, Tkachuk isn’t the only restricted free agent in this situation. Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning is trying to get 21-year-old defenceman Quinn Hughes and 22-year-old centre Elias Pettersson signed to new deals. As it stands now, neither will be in camp and it’s not known when Vancouver might be able to get either player into the fold. There’s talk when the dust settles that Hughes will sign an eight-year contract while Pettersson might be something in the five-year range. This is just speculation, but it should be noted Hughes and Tkachuk are close friends, so you have to think they’ve been in constant contact throughout the process. Hughes and Pettersson are both represented by Pat Brisson and J.P. Barry of CAA Hockey, so that would add another wrinkle to those negotiations.

The National Hockey Super League (NHSL) will comprise three teams and hope to have 15 teams by 2023. Within the first year, the NHSL will feature three teams Noarlunga Stars, Port Adelaide Brewers and Adelaide XTream, made up of predominantly South Australian players, to then expand to a national level format next summer. Games will be played in front of crowds at IceArena on Friday nights as the season is expected to kick-off at the beginning of November. The league will feature a similar rulebook to the NHL as the general managers will be tasked to find a coach and draft their team from registered players. Each general manager can contact two marquee players to build their team around; however, the player cannot be from the same club in the IHSA season. If players want to be drafted, they must nominate themselves prior to the rest of the team being filled out at the NHSL draft in mid-October. Draft teams, team names and lead rules will be announced soon after the draft, ready to commence the season starting in November. Ok well this is moronic. Firstly, ice hockey is niche at best in Australia. The AIHL is semi-pro, with some player compensation (especially for imports) and is 8 teams big. The women's league is fully amateur and has five teams. I live in SA, and while ice hockey has a following (there is/were consistently ~1000 people at home games for the Adrenaline despite their record) I question whether in a city of 1.5m people there is enough money to support three fully professional teams Why isn't it starting in either Victoria or Sydney as rhey have bigger populations- Vic supports two AIHL teams and Sydney two (plus Newcastle). Were the teams there skeptical it would work, as I am? How will this work with the AIHL? It looks to be a super league situation, with the diffetence being that a significant people actually cared about rugby. This could be enough to alienate people away from the sport due to confusion. *sigh*. I'll probably go to games and if anyone's interested I'll provide info as to how things seem to be going.

To be blunt, if the Senators lose him it'll be yet another example of the outrageous ineptitude by management. He's popular (fans regularly say that his new contract should come with a big C on his jumper), talented, right at the beginning of his career, and has an on ice presence that'll bring attention to the team. Add on how far below the floor the team still is... just ****** pay him already.
