  1. I totally agree with that. As a former season ticket holder at the Spectrum it was a totally different crowd. The Spectrum fans were more blue collar, die hard fans who were passionate about the team and loved the game. The building also matched the crowd. The building was dark, dreart, reeked of urine on the third level but is was LOUD and an extremely intimidating place to play. When JJ Daignault scored OT winner in the finals it sounded like i was next to a jet as so loud you couldn't hear yourself think. The new building basically priced out the die hard blue collar fan and replaced them with more of a business crowd. There are also a lot more "comped" tickets in the new building versus the old. One thing that would frustrate the hell out of me at the new building was people talking on their damn cell phones during a game. Not that the technology existed at the Spectrum but you would have had someone take it and throw or it would be meaningless as you would have trouble hearing your conversation. Now I will say that the new building rivals the Spectrum come playoff time. When Primeau scored the OT winner against the Bolts the place was shaking it was so loud. But on a game to game basis and due to league dynamics we will never see the old crowds like at the Spectrum. It's sad as the NHL is missing out on a generation of fans. As a child you went to a Flyers game you were hooked. While still expensive it was affordable. Now if you have more than one child forget it. The league has to hope the kids watch on TV and grow to love the sport; but nothing like live.
  2. As others have mentioned it's really hard to compare players. It's probably also a little unfair to the drafted player as to compare him to a certain player often elevates fans expectations in that player develop into the one he is being compared to. Having watch a ton of footage on Morin and the championships my first impression is that he does have some serious wheels. Compared to Hatcher (remember the infamous playoff loss and people making reference to seeing orange pylons and it being the Flyers defense), Morin is a significantly better skater. He just has an effortless stride for his size and I could see scouts being intriqued by a guy his size who skates as well as he does. But he does seem to love the physical play which is refreshing for a big guy (Christine still ticks me off). He is also a pretty good fighter as well. I think it is Ok to compare the two when drafted with Morin having the edge in skating, speed, and fighting and Hatcher having the edge in leadership, positional play and intangibles. One thing in our favor is having a guy like Pronger around. He should be paid simply to mentor this kid. Mentor him of positional play, puck play, angles, stick work, how to be a professional on and off the ice. If Pronger can instill some of those traits into him with his mean streak we could have a special defensman in a couple years/
  3. I agree Aziz. I look at Pittsburgh this past season with some of their trade deadline acquisitions. They essentially went all and it didn't pay off. The difference is that they acquired Iginla and he walked after the season. The Flyers MO would have been to trade for him at the deadline and then sign him to a 3 or 4 year extension at a higher rate.
  4. I am definitely a traditionalist which is why I hate Bettman as much as I do. He was a guy who was an NBA reject and knew nothing of the game nor it's traditions. All he did was come in and expand and put teams in cities where they don't belong; or insist on floating a franchise that should have moved to Quebec (Phoenix). That was all fine and dandy but major work stoppages, a lost season, the crappy cap, the rule changes extra referee, etc makes me yearn for the day his ass is gone and a true hockey game is made Commissioner.
  5. Here is Behn at his finest. It takes a long time to get going but I would love to have heard the conversation. Right before they start throwing Wilson almost seems like he is sticking his tongue out or laughing at him. Perhaps his psycho best
  6. I agree. One of the players I wanted to target as an RFA last season was Chris Stewart of the Blues, huge kid with talent and physical. He just came off an 18 , 18 season. Those are the types of guys we need to go after - young with talent but not proven
  7. Love that comment. Good to see Big Bad Behn on the list. While most people will remember him for his fighting ability (and others for his propensity for turnovers) he was also very skilled offensively and even made some all star teams. He was one of my favorite Flyers simply because he was nuts. I remember Al Morganti interviewing him and talking about the interview and his fighting ability and he said "He threw every single punch with evil intentions".
  8. My lines would be as follows: Hartnell Giroux Vorachek Schenn Vinny Simmonds Read Couterier Gagne Talbot Hall Rinaldo Jake and CG had excellent chemistry last year. To me the key to the team's success this season is Hartnell. If he is in shape, healthy and on his game he should score 30 goals this season and the team does well. If he struggles like last year then it screws up all the line combinations putting someone CG's line I think they will stick with moving Schenn to the wing and I really like that second line. They are big and physical and talented. I think Vinny thrives having two big, physical wingers who will drive to the net, collect rebounds and create more space for him. This is where Vinny is a big help. By having him on the second line we have the potential for a defensively sound 3rd line that can contribute some scoring.
  9. Love the site Jammer. I could watch "The King" Bob Probert fight all day. I like this site running parallel to Hockeyfights.com so I can watch and then review the stats. In fact, what the hell, first day back from vacation, I am going to watch his fights while my system upgrades are underway!
  10. Funny thing was I was talking to the Boxcar, Ed Hospodar and we were talking about one time when the Flyers were playing the Caps and Ed skated from inside the blue line to nail his ass. You could see the gleam in his eye and his face change as he smiled and said "I remembered that. I hated that mother f'er".
  11. Thanks for the post! I was very intrigued by "The Missing Link" when he was in Juniors and coming into the league. He was one crazy bastard. Hell of a good bout with The King. I would imagine those two would have had one hell of time hitting the bars together. A tribute to Link which shows some old Jr footage
  12. Just another in a long list of reasons that I HATE what Bettman has done to the game. The stupid Metropolitan division. Look at the division groupings. You have Northeast and Canadian cities with the two Florida markets. The chart alone should support contraction for the two Florida teams. Perhaps what is most upsetting to me is the playoff formats. There is no reseeding after the initial round of the playoffs. Teams face other teams in their divisions so in a division with two strong teams one could be eliminated early. The whole thing sucks.
  13. A couple immediately come to mind and they are (in no particular order) Claude Lemieux Dale Hunter Ulf Samuelson Darcy Tucker And this is my surprise but anyone who has followed the league for a long time would agree - SCOTT STEVENS People forget that when he first came into the league he was notorious for going low on players along the boards. He would infuriate players with hits to the knees. Of course as his career progressed his hits went higher. Now as a Lindros fan I am trying to be objective here but my point is that he hit players when they were vulnerable and not expecting it. I know you need to keep your head up and always be ready but he definitely walked a fine line. Granted this one was on Domi but still cheap
  14. This upcoming season is going to be hard to gauge as there are questions in net, the health of the defense, and consistent scoring. I think best case scenario we can finish as high as 2nd or 3rd in the division IF: Hartnell scores 30, Mason gives at least 45 quality starts with a save percentage over 91%, the defense stays healthy and Vinny gets 75 - 80 points. Realistically I think 5th or 6th is where we finish. All of the teams have some question marks and pluses and minuses. I don't figure the Bruins to drop off much. Do the Pens rebound after essentially going "All In" and falling short? Were the Canadians and Leafs one season wonders? Regardless there are no gimme games anymore with Colombus greatly improved, the Leafs, making the playoffs, the Isles getting stronger, and adding traditional powerhouse Detroit to the East makes it even harder.
  15. I thought it was a smart move by Homer. VERY cap friendly hit. The question I would pose to the Flyers faithful is looking back to draft day would you still have selected Couterier instead of Dougie Hamilton? We really could have used Dougie then and still so today while our biggest strength is the center position. Curious as to what others think. When I was watching the draft unfold I was psyched as Dougie was what we needed and fell into our laps. But Couts also was projected to go higher so kind of a catch 22. Looking back then and at the teams strengths and weaknesses now I still wish we had taken Hamilton. He is going to be a top pairing or #3 guy and plays with an edge while Couterier gives us smarts, defense, and scoring potential down the line.
  16. Agree GG. Sad thing is that we had Lombardi here in Philly after he built an excellent reputation with the Sharks for building that team and we let him go. A lot of people might think the Hextall move is more of the good ole boys network but Hexy was widely considered one of the best up and coming talent evaluators and architects of the minor league system and players. Given the performance of the Phantoms the past couple of years and continually ranking in the bottom of the prospects pool, if Hexy improves those areas without ever being GM or making a trade he will be worth it.
  17. While not everyone agrees with his methods, no one can question Ed Snider's love of the game and his desire to win. I actually think that desire to have one more cup is part of the reason the Bryz deal was made. That being said, he won't be around for ever. I think Comcast retains ownership of the team. Comcast is a business and Flyers hockey is good business. They are one of the top hockey markets in the league with loyal, die hard fans who not only sell out every night but also buy a ton of merchandise. Comcast knows business and they know the Flyers are good business. Not to mention those corporate types tend to be very competittive and I think that mentality will filter down to the decisions the team makes.in the form of more sensible contracts but still having a win it all mentality every year.
  18. That may the case Doom but I look at it like this. Couterier is high lottery pick and has an enormous amount of potential. He is already one of the smartest players on the ice and his defensive abilities are outstanding. That being said, he hasn't shown the offensive production he may or may not be capable of. He is only going into his 3rd season so that might develop or he could be a career 3rd line defensive shut down center. Coburn is an excellent skater and sound defensively. He doesn't stand out to me either offensively or defensively. He makes an initial outlet pass but has difficulty getting his shot on goal. Defensively his speed covers up for alot of things but not overly physical, doesnt block many shots, etc. Honestly I expected him to really step it up with all the injuries last season and he did not impress me. He had a lot of turnovers , was out of position and really isnt known for "clearing the porch". To me both of the Flyers have potential but haven't realized it yet. Kane on the other hand is one of the top emerging young power forwards in the league. He is an excellent skater and his work ethic is well known as he busts his arse on every shift. His last full season was in 11/12 where he scored 30 goals for the first time and that was playing with no real stars. You put him on the Giroux left wing with his skill and the way he drives to the net and 30 goals a season are a given. To me to acquire a blossoming 22 year old power forward who has already scored 30 goals in the league is well worth Couterier and Coburn. Just my two cents but appreciate to convo!
  19. I agree it's a win - win. Erikkson is an excellent player that not too many people have heard about. Seguin is the most talented and with the Stars he will likely play on the top line and get a ton of minutes where he should blossom. To me the deal helps both teams as the Bruins get an excellent two way player that they can plug right in and contribute. The Stars get a potential superstar if he gets his act together on and off the ice.
  20. I agree Jammer which is why I thought out loud if Couterier and Coburn for Kane would get it done. We would have one of the best top lines in hockey with Kane, Giroux, and Jake for years to come. Someone else said Couts and Coburn would be overpaying for Kane and I disagree. I think he easily scores 30 goals next season and put him on a line with two creative guys like Jake and Giroux and he should score 40.
  21. I agree. He would literally be almost unstoppable in the league today. One thing I liked about him was his nasty edge. If he played in today's game he would have crushed Crosby every chance he got.
  22. I really liked Bogosian when he came out in the draft and while he showed a lot of potential his 2nd season I am not sure about him now. If I was to do a deal with Winnipeg I would seriously see what it would take to acquire Evander Kane. I could see him playing on Giroux's left for a long time and lighting it up. I HIGHLY doubt there is even the possibility but think maybe Couterier (they receive a young forward in return) and Coburn MIGHT make them think about it.
  23. I agree and think he could play wing in the NHL. The more I think about it the more I see Couterier being moved (especially if Laughton is ready). To get a good defenseman we almost have to part with one of young guys and he makes the most sense. I still think if the right dman is available that Couts and Coburn might be the guys used to get them
  24. It's hard to argue with anything you wrote in your post Rux. I agree that Neely should not have gotten in but using the logic if Neely is in than Lindros certainly should be in.
