  1. Yes! When Laughton/Raffl/NAK are 'firing full' it seems like 'too many men on the ice' !
  2. Something is going on here - - PIERRE-LUC DUBOIS C, COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS Pierre-Luc Dubois provided the game-winning goal in Monday's 3-2 victory over Detroit. Dubois didn't play much at the end of the second period, but coach John Tortorella denied afterward that the Blue Jackets forward was benched. Either way, Dubois gave Columbus a 3-1 lead with his first goal of the season at the 6:26 mark of the third period. That held up as the game winner and it gave him his first point in three games this campaign. Jan 18, 2021, 3:55 PM ET
  3. As we were expecting - as Frost is moved from the #13 forward to centering Lindblom and Konecny, then Bunnaman (C/LW/RW) is promoted from the Taxi Squad to the regular roster and the #13 forward spot. Space on the 23-player roster is made by placing Ghost on the COVID-related Non-Roster Status List.
  4. Good post. Agree mostly. Here is support info as we see Patrick play. The things bolded are things we have seen early in these first 2 games. It will be awesome to see him get better and better as the season progresses. Quotes: "I’ve been in touch with Patty a lot," Sanheim said. "He lives a couple houses down from where I live, so I saw him a lot, working together and skating together. He’s been awesome, his skill set is next level. We knew that from when the day he got drafted. It’s awesome seeing him back out there skating and looking forward to playing with him again." Patrick's presence is huge for the Flyers down the middle of the ice. Along with Sean Couturier and Kevin Hayes, Patrick gives the Flyers three tough-to-play-against centers with size and smarts. "His skill level has always spoken for itself," Fletcher said. "He sees the ice so well, 200-foot player, doesn’t cheat away from the puck, he doesn’t cheat defensively and has a very good shot. I look at our top three centermen in Couturier, Hayes and Patrick, and all three of them are going to play important even strength minutes, all three of them are going to play power play minutes and all three of them are going to play PK minutes. We're very fortunate, and obviously we have Scotty Laughton and even Morgan Frost that can move up in the lineup and play big minutes, too. We like our depth through the middle of the ice and I'm excited to see what Nolan can do this year, as well as everybody else." Nolan Patrick Profile Patrick has excellent size and a strong and powerful skating stride. He gets good speed and acceleration, allowing him to create offensively off the rush and in the offensive zone. Patrick is powerful and can fight through checks and get to the net. He has good balance and is tough to knock off the puck. Patrick has decent agility and edge work, helping him to make quick cuts and take advantage of his strong puck handling skills. A natural sniper, Nolan Patrick has a tremendous wrist shot and quick release. He also has quick, soft hands and can bury chances in close to the net. His game is incredibly mature for his age. He has high end hockey IQ and always seems to make the right play both with and without the puck. Patrick has excellent vision and passing skills. He can put the puck through tight areas and make tape-to-tape passes for teammates. Patrick has the skill to make his linemates better. His long reach and quick hands make him a very good puck handler. He can extend plays, waiting for his teammates to get open. Patrick also has the ability to slow the play down, or speed it up, giving defenders one more thing to think about. He can play both the power and the finesse game. Nolan Patrick works well down low, using his big body to shield the puck and to make plays in the cycle game. He can get in quickly on the forecheck and forces opposing defencemen to make a quick play, or make a mistake. Patrick’s big frame is quite intimidating in battles, both along the boards and in front of the net. And, we love this quote from Bill Meltzer: They have deep scoring, and their third line” – Patrick centering James van Riemsdyk and Jake Voracek – “is going to get some matchups against the third D pairings on other teams, and they’re going to eat them.” Tonight's game will be a lot of fun!
  5. No. Much more recent. But, we will pass on the name for obvious reasons.
  6. @Podein25 Wooops, my friend, my bad. Dumb me. Your question - Podein25 said: I know it's early, but what's everybody drinking? As the rookie here, I answered your question thinking you are implying that there is an abundance of optimism after only 2 games, ie: 'what's enerybody drinking? The kool-aid?' My answer was depth, depth, depth, etc - - - - When, in actuality, you truely meant 'what are we drinking in our glass in our comfort while watching the game'! Dumb me. With all the responses, now I got it!
  7. @OccamsRazor To answer your question OR: My friend, who is a retired Flyers player, told me this morning that no locker rooms, dressing rooms, lounges, etc are shared between the NHL teams and the NBA teams. They are totally separate. But there are common areas in the bulding that both NHL and NBA teams traverse. Examples are in the photos shown in the above posts.
  8. Hey P25, we all are drinking this - - depth, depth, depth - - - as stated by Charlie O'Connor: Excerpts: When outsiders praise the Philadelphia Flyers for their depth, at times it can play like a criticism wrapped in a compliment. Sure, the argument goes, the Flyers have lots of good players. They have third-line-caliber players on their fourth line, first-line producers on their third line, 60-point defensemen on their third pair. That’s why Philadelphia is a lock to be a strong team, those people acknowledge. But where are the great players? Where are the hyper-talented game-changers who can take over a contest or even a series? Depth is all well and good during a grinding regular season, but in a seven-game series against elite opposition, who do they have who can step up and outscore Nathan MacKinnon? Or maneuver around Victor Hedman? Or keep Boston’s Perfection Line off the scoreboard? Who do the Flyers have who can be trusted to break things open or completely shut them down in the toughest of times? Well, watching a team’s best all-around player [Couturier] — and the go-to response from most fans when they hear the Flyers lack true greatness — go down after just two shifts certainly qualifies as “tough.” Yet Carter Hart and Travis Konecny seemed to have no trouble carrying the load like the stars they might be on the verge of becoming.
  9. Hey H58. Yes, you are right, depth, depth, depth. Love this quote from Bill Clement: They have deep scoring, and their third line” – Patrick centering James van Riemsdyk and Jake Voracek – “is going to get some matchups against the third D pairings on other teams, and they’re going to eat them.”
  10. Morgan Frost quote Sunday on his linemates Lindblom and Konecny: "They're both elite goal scorers. I'll try to put the puck on their stick as much as I can." Sunday's practice for Game 3 vs Buffalo Monday night: Frost and Lindblom - - they are ready -

  12. Turned on my TV to watch the Sixers pre-game show - - - and it was not there! How does this relate to our Flyers? - - - Yahoo Sports NBA postpones 76ers-Thunder matchup due to COVID-19 outbreak Ryan Young·Writer Sun, January 17, 2021, 5:38 PM The NBA has postponed yet another game this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The league, after a week full of postponements, called off the Philadelphia 76ers’ matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder at Chesapeake Energy Arena just hours before it was set to tip on Sunday night. The 76ers, the NBA said, did not have the required amount of players available to participate in the contest. The 76ers had four players not make the trip to Oklahoma City — Joel Embiid, Seth Curry, Vincent Poirier and Mike Scott — and had at least six players in the health and safety protocol due to contact tracing, per ESPN. Philadelphia is now set to host the Boston Celtics next on Wednesday. That matchup is now the 14th that the league has postponed so far this season — which isn’t even a month old. All but one of those postponements came within the last week. The NBA also introduced new health and safety protocols on Tuesday, which included keeping players and coaches isolated when not competing and increased mask usage, among other things. To the Wells Fargo Center crew: Clean and sanitize all facilities thoroughly before the Flyers-Buffalo game on Monday evening. (There are some common areas that both NHL teams and NBA teams traverse.) Hayes and Farabee:
  13. Four big comments from the all-wise Bill Clement in the Philadelphia Inquirer at 4 PM ET this afternoon (Sunday): When Bill Clement speaks - - - we listen! (Love that number 3 below.) Excerpts: Bill Clement, a Renaissance man since being drafted by the Flyers in 1970, has traded in his microphone. He now lives in Waynesville, N.C. Clement, 70, has stepped down from his job as one of the Flyers’ TV broadcasters. Thus ends an admirable career in which he spent 16 years (over two stints) as a color analyst on Flyers telecasts. Earlier in his career, he had a 15-year tenure as the lead analyst for ESPN’s broadcasts of NHL games, and he was a studio host for NBC and Versus. In addition, he was a broadcaster at five Olympics, and his broadcast credits include work for ABC and TNT in the United States, and CBC, Sportsnet, and Sirius-XM in Canada. “I think the clincher was turning 70,” Clement, a center on the Flyers’ Stanley Cup championship teams in 1974 and 1975, said in a phone interview. 1) Clement says the Flyers have a distinct advantage: Carter Hart. He will be watching them on the NHL’s TV package. 2) “They’re really well-coached,” Clement said. “And I like so many things about this team. 3)They have deep scoring, and their third line” – Patrick centering James van Riemsdyk and Jake Voracek – “is going to get some matchups against the third D pairings on other teams, and they’re going to eat them.” 4) Clement is also optimistic about 6-foot-7, 230-pound Samuel Morin, the defenseman-turned-left winger who cleared waivers last week and is on the Flyers’ taxi squad. He may be used against some of the more physical teams. “When I heard about the experiment of him going up front, I thought, ‘This is perfect,’ " Clement said. “Now he won’t have a target on his back when he goes back to get pucks. He’ll terrorize on the forecheck. You put him in the lineup if you go to Long Island and play a tough Islanders team, or whatever. He can skate, and I really hope that works out.”
  14. For game 3 and game 4 - The Sabres play against the Flyers on Monday and Tuesday. Coach Ralph Krueger said after the session that Reinhart's lower-body injury is "manageable." It's unclear if that means he will play on Monday. Reinhart also briefly left Friday's game against Washington.
  15. Totally disagree my friend. IMO, ultimately AV will move Gus to that right side with Provorov - - - - - - after Gus' adjustment period to his new team, new system, and new coaching. AV is starting Gus with Hagg on the 3rd pair with the ease of communication with his home buddy and adjustment time. Quote: His [Gus] skill set, his ability to go back on pucks and make good decisions and transition the puck up the ice, we thought was a very important element to add to our group." Fletcher. It won't be long. Gus is a 4 year NHL veteran and has 1st pair experience playing with Duncan Keith. Quotes: At 28, Gustafsson has been around long enough to know the ropes on a top pairing. And besides playing with Keith, Gustafsson also had a chance to compete with other stars (forwards) such as three-time Stanley Cup champions Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. Gus is LH but has played almost exclusevly on the Right Side the last 3 years and prefers it. “I played a couple games on the left with Calgary (recently) but it didn’t feel right,’’ he [Gus] said. “So right now I’m used to playing on the right side. I feel more confident on the right side. Whatever the coaches want me to do, I play there.’’ “For the most part, I have liked what I have seen,” Vigneault said. “I do think as he [Gus] gets more familiar with the way we want to do things, the way we approach our preparation, our expectations — coaches to players — I think the more he understands, the better he is going to play. It is hard for someone coming into a new style of play, a new emphasis on different things, but he seems like a very good young man.” Gustafsson has been “very receptive to the things I have told him, and Mike Yeo, who runs the D, has told him,” Vigneault said. “He’s picking it up every day, and that is what he needs to do if he is going to be an effective player for us.” Left winger James van Riemsdyk has faced Gustafsson in NHL games and, now, in training-camp scrimmages. “He’s super smooth,” van Riemsdyk said. “He moves the puck really well and is just a smart player all around. He’s definitely a guy we’re happy to have on our team. The last couple of days we’ve gotten a chance to do some power-play stuff with him and he is really good up top there, too. That will definitely be a big part of his contribution to the team.” "[Gustafsson] has tremendous deception with the puck, tremendous poise," general manager Chuck Fletcher said. "We don't have a defenseman that sees the ice like he does, he can play on the power play. It's a different type of skill set than Matt ... there wasn't going to be that ability to replace Matt per se with the same style." "We think his (Gustafsson) skill set meshes really well with what we need," Fletcher said. "We think we have a lot of strong defenders on our team and we're very structured defensively as a group. His skill set, his ability to go back on pucks and make good decisions and transition the puck up the ice, we thought was a very important element to add to our group." "Gustafsson’s just got tremendous deception and vision." It will be interesting for us to watch Gus carefully for his skill set and his adjustment here with our Flyers. Already we have seen some good stuff in his defensive zone break-out work and on the 2nd Power Play unit. Fletcher was wise to sign Gus to a 1 year contract. It protects from Gus being selected by Seattle in the July Expanson Draft and allows Fletcher to re-sign Gus assuming Gus has played well, Gus is happy here (including with his 3 Swede buddies), and there is mutual interest. Optimistic for Gus' success on the top-pair with Provorov.
  16. Here is the difficult part - - Assuming Frost plays well, perhaps great, during these 8 or more games, when Couturier returns what happens to Frost? Frost has not played wing at any point in his hockey career at any level. And, Frost does not qualify for AVs 4th line center position: AV's 4th line profile/requirement is hard skating, hard forechecking, physical, pin the other team in their own end, fast/strong backchecking, defensive work, PK duty. With 4 high quality Centers that are 'top 3 lines' centers, does that open up trade thinking? Couturier, Hayes, and Patrick are not candidates to move to wing IMO. Especially don't move Patrick to wing - - must minimize his time at the 'wall' due to his head and migraine issues. Or, is this topic way too early to discuss?
  17. Saturday Mystery Flyers Photo Contest Yes! Correct! Good work flyercanuck. Wow, I thought the jersey # 68 would throw-off everyone. But, you guys are toooo sharp - - flyercanuck, OccamsRazor, CoachX. flyercanuck moves into a tie for the League lead in the standings with Podein25. 18. End of the line for the 37 year old Spezza after 17 NHL years?
  19. Is someone planning a game 3 thread, or do we go back to the 2020-21 Season thread?
  20. Agree P25. In addition to moving-in Sam Morin for selected games, what would you recommend? We know grit/physical most shifts is different from retaliation/fights/intimidation which Morin brings, but it would be good to have both. The 4th line of Laughton/NAK/Raffl gives some grit/physical, but I agree with you - more is needed.
  21. Yes! Chemistry. Gotta love this - -
  22. This morning (Sunday) at Flyers practice - And for us fans for tomorrow night's game -
