  1. I wouldn't press the luck banking on the whole "change of scenery" approach. Its great that Mason looks like he has revamped his career in Philly but its wrong to assume that would be the case with Myers. The other difference is getting Mason in the fold was a low risk, high reward move. Going after Myers would be high risk, low, moderate to maybe high reward. Its a lot of risk and you don't really know what you are getting long term. The moves this team makes going forward the next 2 seasons cannot be gambles.
  2. If it can be proven that the league knew about long term affects of concussions and deliberately withheld information from the players at the time they were playing then the players should be compensated. My problem is these players taking information about concussions that has been recently gathered and applying it to when they played. To me that information or "evidence" should be thrown out. It wasn't available to the league at the time they played and should not be considered. I'm sorry for what they (and their families) are going through but that doesn't automatically entitle you to money from someone else unless they can prove at the time they used deception or withholding tactics of medical information regarding concussion.
  3. I concur. I would be shocked if Homer wasn't attempting to ink Mason to a multiyear deal by the Olympic break. Mason is getting to the point where his performance and sample size in O&B is significant enough to justify an extension.
  4. I'd listen to offers but I would have to be wowwed. The Flyers actually have stablity in goal. I don't want to upset that in any way right now. So anything short of a first round pick or a young top pairing D prospect and a 2nd rounder I really wouldn't pull the trigger. There is still a lot of season left and the last thing you want is to move Emery, and Mason goes down with injury or his play deteriorates.
  5. This. I'm sure he is fond of some of the people he met in Philly but it ends there. He won a Stanley Cup in LA and if you are a young bachelor with a lot of money and a penchant to party, LA is a great city.
  6. My understanding is Berube was very much a players coach as an assistant and most of the guys liked him. He was mostly the good cop so I don't think he ruffled many feathers with the players. Berube probably isn't the best guy to go forward with from a schematic and system standpoint but I don't see anything from a motivational standpoint or not having the rapport of the players to suggest he wouldn't be an adequate bench boss. It really too early to definitively say he is the problem. Right now its looking more like bad chemistry from the front office decisions of the general manager.
  7. Maroon had some off the ice issues if I remember correctly. He was dismissed from the team. I'm sorry but if someone who was unproven and had some off the ice issues then they have to go. Kudos to him for turning it around with his second chance but if he doesn't get thrown off the team his antics likely continue and he amounts to nothing. You can't look at what he's doing now to suggest we should have gotten more in return for him. He was a 6th round pick after all.
  8. I disagree. Remember how there was a lot of talk about Richards being left off Team Canada in 2010. He made the team and the rest is history. He won gold and came back and led the Flyers into the playoffs and on to the Finals. Being able to play with highly skilled players for a couple weeks and have a chance to win gold can do a lot for a players confidence. The only good thing I could see with Giroux not being selected is that he doesn't have a chance to get injured.
  9. I don't think Berube should have thrown Rosehill under the bus but just simply say something to the effect of, "The coaching staff is going to make it clear to him and the rest of the team that we have to stay disciplined out there. I have no problem with physical play but it must be in the confines of the rules and if it goes overboard and hurts this team they will sit." Berube talked about how the league has changed from the 70s and 80s and the need to adapt to today's NHL but the way he handled the question makes me question whether he was just trying to say the right thing but isn't going to follow through.
  10. I know his time here so far is a relatively small sample size but I think maybe playing in Columbus where there is not much fan energy really dragged on him and fed into his struggles. Sometimes guys just need that fresh start and change of scenary. He was rookie of the year so he definitely has some pedigree. I really like how he handles the puck. He doesn't go out of his way all the time a la Brodeur but he picks his spots and when he does he is decisive. I still want to see Razor get some work but right now I'd stick with Mason as 1.
  11. I totally agree. If I were GM I would have released him today. He doesn't provide anything this team needs right now.
  12. I'm sorry but Lavy had to go. The mistake wasn't firing him it was waiting until 3 games into the regular season to do it. Just look at their play and inability to adjust to teams like the Bruins, Devils, and Rangers. They figured us out. Play solid defense first and wait for us to make a mistake with the puck and pounce. That free wheeling, offensive first mentality created way too many chances the other way. Elias said something very telling when the Devils beat the Flyers 4 straight after losing game 1 two years ago. He was asked by Pierre if they made any adjustments to have so much success against the Flyers. His paraphrased response, "We didn't have to. They pretty much stuck to what they do and we knew how to defend it and get opportunities for ourselves. "
  13. To me you let a guy prove himself when you fire a coach mid to 3/4 of the way when you have written off the season. You slap the interim tag on him and let him prove himself. This early in the year if you are firing you better bring in someone with head coaching experience. You already gambled by bringing Lavy back seeing as how this team has declined on his watch. Giving the job to Berube is pretty much doubling down at this point.
  14. I kind of hope you are wrong. As much as I liked Hextall, its time to get someone in the organization that doesn't see through orange and black shaded glasses. This organization is living in the past and flying blind.
  15. @jammer2 I'm not sure I agree with your assessment of Vinny being soft. He's not a mucker and a grinder but he doesn't get pushed around either and is good at protecting the puck. I guess I hear the word soft and I think more of the guy that Vinny is replacing (Briere). The good news is whether it's Schenn or Read on the 2nd line they have options and neither would be out of place.
  16. I agree. Both did a decent job when playing but neither wowwed to the point of extending a contract beyond this season. They were simply added because of the injury situation this year. When guys like Rinaldo, Talbot, Coburn, Mez, etc get healthy and return to the lineup there really is no place for Hall or Huskins.
  17. It's a pipe dream to get to 1. I could see them maybe trying to move up inside the top 10 by trading their first and second round picks to a team that is targeting a player that could be selected at #11 where the Flyers might want someone that would go before 11.
  18. The only one that was potentially stoppable was the first goal. His positioning was a little questionable but also Huskins was struggling to locate the puck and Gervais abandoned his man to help him out which is why Moulson got so open. The Grabner goal he didn't see it because L Schenn screened him. Its a shame because out of all plays Schenn takes the body he just continued to back in and not challenge Grabner because he was afraid of his speed. The Tavaras goal, Gustaffson left his feet to slide and knocked the puck in the net after he made a great save from less than 15 ft out.
  19. Thats a brutal schedule down the stretch. I would honestly be happy if they were somehow able to manage around 15 pts in those remaining games. They dug themselves too deep of a hole out of the gate. It's really a shame this team 5 on 5 is so bad. If their 5 on 5 was half as good as special teams they would likely be in the playoffs.
  20. But it doesn't work that way. Having Richards and Carter on the team last year instead of the players we got in return wouldn't have made this team anymore of a cup contender. The issues that led to their demise were not skills that Richards and Carter would have been able to shore up.
  21. Because he already had a young promising goalie in Bob to backup and the same day they finalized the deal for Bryz. In Homer's mind at the time of the Richards' trade he had already solved the goaltending. Now in hindsight would I rather have Bernier over Bryz? Of course but at the time bringing in Bernier didn't make sense.
  22. @radoran I tend to agree with you. I don't believe Phx was actively shopping him. They were simply fielding calls to see if a GM would throw them an offer they couldn't refuse. Homer was right to inquire and Phx was also right to demand a King's ransom.
  23. The team in 2010 wasn't as good as some make it out to be. They made the playoffs on the last day in a shootout of all things. Yes they made the Finals but they had a favorable pathway to get there. Montreal did all the heavy lifting for us and they were burnt out by the time they got to us. You couple that and a journeyman goalie who all the sudden caught lightning in a bottle and the Flyers were more lucky than good in 2010. In my opinion the biggest mistake Homer made was signing Bryzgalov and letting go of Bob. I was on board with bringing in a stop gap like Vokoun for a year to split time with Bob as he developed. The Bryz debacle coupled with the Pronger injury have set this team back a few years.
  24. Ray Emery is playing behind a stacked team. I'm not saying he isn't playing well but be honest with yourself you know he ain't putting up those numbers on the this team with our rubbish defense.
