Postgame 5: Halfway There Flyers edge Habs, 1-0, to take series lead by Bill Meltzer @BillMeltzer August 16, 2020 Facebook Share Twitter Share Link Share Email Share HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED The Flyers took a two games to one lead over the Montreal Canadiens in their First Round series as they made a skinny 1-0 lead hold up the rest of the way at Scotiabank Arena on Sunday night. The game was filled with special teams play, but neither team got anything going on the power play. The Flyers went 0-for-6 on the power play, while Montreal went 0-for-3. Overall, it was a tight-checking and physical game but neither team was as clean with the puck as they needed to be. Jakub Voracek scored a deflection goal at 5:21 of the first period, assisted by Claude Giroux and Robert Hägg. Carter Hart recorded the first playoff shutout of his NHL career, stopping 23 shots. Carey Price denied 19 of 20 Flyers shots. Recap: PHI 1, MTL 0 05:03 • August 16th, 2020 TURNING POINT On what looked like a set play off the faceoff, Voracek got himself to the net. Giroux threw the puck hard at the net from the left side and Voracek got a hippity-hop deflection goal. It wasn't pretty, but it loomed huge on this night. MELTZER'S TAKE * Getting traffic at the net contributed to the Flyers first scoring chance and, shortly, thereafter, created their first goal. Later, a four-minute power play by the Flyers accomplished very little but Travis Konecny drew iron on a shot through traffic and Voracek made a nice power move to the net in the latter part of the power play. A subsequent power play produced better possession and puck movement but no goal. * Hart made the game's first tough save, denying Brett Kulak joining the rush. Later, Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Kulak hit the post with the same shift. Later, the Kotaniemi line hemmed in the Thompson line. Overall, though, the Flyers played much better defense in the opening period than they did in any period of Game 2. * The second period was a physical, grinding frame with both teams generally playing solid defense. The Flyers' penalty kill stepped up in this stanza while the power play continued to struggle. Two uncharacteristic terrible giveaways by Scott Laughton -- one to Brendan Gallager in the slot after a backhanded flip from behind the net, the second to Jonathan Drouin right over the middle in the defensive zone -- were erased by Hart. Travis Sanheim had a strong period from the back end, on both sides of the puck. The Flyers did a good job at finishing checks. * The Canadiens kept on taking stick penalties in the third period, and the Flyers continued to scuffle to generate any pressure. Hart came up with some big saves, including one on a shorthanded counterattack by Lehkonen. * After a couple of icings by the Flyers, Hart denied Kotkaniemi point blank after he broke through the Flyers defense. Philly was able to hold on. Third period shots were 10-6 Montreal; hardly the sort of closeout the Flyers had in Game 1 but good enough on this night. STATISTICALLY SPEAKING * Carter Hart earned his first career playoff shutout and becomes the youngest goaltender in Flyers history to record a playoff shutout at 22 years and 3 days. * Tonight was the first 1-0 playoff victory for the Flyers since Game 4 of the 2003 Eastern Conference Semifinals vs. Ottawa (May 1, 2003). * Robert Hagg returned to the lineup tonight for his first action of the series. He recorded an assist for his first career playoff point and was a +1 on 12:54 of ice time. * The Flyers blocked 24 shots compared to the Canadiens 10 blocked shots... Matt Niskanen led the way with six blocks. * Jakub Voracek led the team in shots (4) and recorded his third career playoff game-winning goal - his others were 4/11/12 at PIT and 4/25/14 vs NYR. Flyers earn #1 seed in Eastern Conference with 4-1 win over Lightning by Bill Meltzer @BillMeltzer August 8, 2020 Facebook Share Twitter Share Link Share Email Share HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED The top-seeded Philadelphia Flyers will play the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. The matchup was set up as a result of the Flyers 4-1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday in the final game of round-robin play. Nicolas Aube-Kubel tallied his first and second career NHL postseason goals with a deflection tally at 7:40 of the first period and then a 2-on-1 goal at the 14:00 mark. Tyler Johnson and Joel Farabee traded off tallies in the second period as the Flyers took a 3-1 lead to the locker room. Tyler Pitlick added some extra insurance late in regulation. Carter Hart was not tested much in terms of quantity but he had to make several critical saves at key junctures in stopping 23 of 24 shots. Andrei Vasilevskiy played well in a losing cause, stopping 26 of 29 Philadelphia shots. TURNING POINT Hart's breakaway save on Nikita Kucherov and the way the Flyers turned a Tampa turnover into Aube-Kubel's first goal of the game turned the early tide and set Philly up for a dominant first period. Once ahead, Philly never relinquished their control. MELTZER'S TAKE * The Lightning had the early pressure in the first period, and the deadly Nikita Kucherov broke through for two golden scoring opportunities. He hit the crossbar on the first and was denied on a five-hole attempt on a breakaway on the second. Thereafter, apart from Hart having to stop an Alex Killorn shorthanded breakaway off a Travis Konecny turnover, the Flyers were like a buzzsaw in building a 2-0 lead and a 20-6 shot advantage. * Victor Hedman appeared to get injured as he fell down defending Tyler Pitllck on what started as a 2-on-2 rush, and became a 2-on-1. Hedman subsequently had to leave the game. The Flyers fourth line alone had three scoring chances in quick succession at one juncture. * Vasilevskiy had no chance on either of Aube-Kubel's first period goals. The first was a deflection in front of a Shayne Gostisbehere point shot. The latter came on a 2-on-1 from the slot off a feed from Sean Couturier. Joel Farabee's secondary assist was his first career NHL postseason point. Philly was credited with a dozen first period hits (led by three from Kevin Hayes) and won 11 of 19 faceoffs (Hayes won five of seven). * The second period was a good defensive period for the Flyers, as they limited the Lightning to seven shots. The Flyers killed off their first penalty with authority but got burned on the second. Hart made a touch save on Mikhail Sergechev. Shortly thereafter, though, he was beaten from the dead slot by Johnson off a Killorn pass. * Strong forechecking work by Couturier and a tape-to-tape cross-ice pass from Gostisbehere to Farabee near the right hash marks presented the Flyers a great scoring chance, and Farabee buried it in the back of the net. STATISTICALLY SPEAKING * The Flyers went a perfect 3-0-0 in the Round Robin against three teams above them in the NHL standings and outscored them 11-3 in the process. * The Flyers earned the #1 seed to enter the playoffs for the first time since the 2000 playoffs. * Nic Aube-Kubel recorded two goals, his first two career Stanley Cup Playoff goals, and led all players in the game with six shots. * Joel Farabee recorded a two-point night with a goal and an assist, which are his first career Stanley Cup Playoff points. * Scott Laughton recorded an assist making him the lone Flyer to record a point in all four games since Return to Play... He led the team with six points (4g-2a). * The Flyers yielded their first goal on the penalty kill since entering the bubble - they are 12-for-13 on the PK * Matt Niskanen led the team with 25:33 of ice time

Flyers sign LW Oskar Lindblom to three-year contract extension Forward inks deal worth $3.0M annually beginning next season The Philadelphia Flyers have signed left wing Oskar Lindblom to a three-year contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $3.0M, according to President of Hockey Operations & General Manager Chuck Fletcher. Lindblom, 23 (8/15/1996), was in the midst of a breakout year this past season, recording 11 goals, which was tied for the team lead at the time, and 18 points (11g-7a) in 30 games, when he was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma by leading specialists at the University of Pennsylvania in December. On July 2, he finished his treatments at the Abramson Cancer Center at Pennsylvania Hospital where his medical team deemed him to be without evidence of cancer at this time. "I am very excited to be a part of the Flyers for the next three seasons," said Lindblom. "The support that the organization, the fans, and the entire NHL has given me has been quite overwhelming. I can't wait to get back skating with the boys and being the professional hockey player I know I can be. I want to thank the Flyers for giving me this opportunity and I look forward to the day I'm back and contributing to the team's success." Lindblom was recently named a finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, which is awarded annually by the NHL to the player who best embodies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the game of hockey. Throughout his treatments during the 2019-20 season, Lindblom was a steady presence alongside his teammates with his frequent visits to games and the locker room, and even skated with them during the NHL's Phase 2 of Return to Play. Overall, Lindblom has recorded 30 goals and 27 assists for 57 points in 134 career regular season games through parts of three seasons in the NHL, all with the Flyers. He came to North America on a full-time basis in 2017 following three seasons with Brynas IF in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), where in his final year he was named Swedish forward of the year in after he was second among all SHL players with 22 goals and fourth with 47 points. A native of Gavle, Sweden, Lindblom was originally selected by the Flyers in the fifth round (138th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, which was held in Philadelphia. He signed his first deal with the club, a three-year entry-level contact, on May 30, 2017.

Then things went quickly from there, training camps open and players got tested, and we have gotten to see them in action during Phase 3 as they get ready to head to their respective hub city for the start of the tournament. While the NHL revealed their series-by-series schedule for the 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers, details still needed to get ironed out for the TV broadcasting schedule. And finally on Tuesday night, NBC Sports revealed their broadcasting schedule and you can now see when your favourite team will be playing, and set your schedule around it! NBC Sports will present up to 120 hours of coverage from the NHL’s 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers on NBC, NBCSN and USA Network beginning August 1, highlighted by at least 10 hours of wall-to-wall NHL action each day from August 1-5, comprised of Qualifying Round and Round Robin matchups. Teams will travel from their home markets on July 26 to either Toronto or Edmonton, the hub cities where all of the games will be played. Up to three games per day in each city will be played to start. It will be quite a busy time in the NHL! There will also be exhibitions games on July 28th and July 29th, before the real action begins. It was revealed what games will take place ahead of the tournament and it sounds like, in the East, the Montreal Canadiens will face off against the Toronto Maple Leafs - classic - the Tampa Bay Lightning will battle the Florida Panthers, the two New York clubs will face each other, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers will meet in a battle of Pennsylvania, the Carolina Hurricanes will play against the Washington Capitals and the Boston Bruins will need to win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. In the West, you guessed it, the the Oilers are expected to play the Flames in pre-playoff game, exhibition contest, on Tuesday, July 28th. The Vancouver Canucks will face the Winnipeg Jets, the Dallas Stars will meet with the Nashville Predators - a Winter Classic repeat - the Chicago Blackhawks will face the St. Louis Blues, the Arizona Coyotes will face the Vegas Golden Knights and the Minnesota Wild will face off against the Colorado Avalanche.
