  1. To put these offensive songs into perspective...."That's why Darkies Were Born" was a satirical song that was written to make fun of racism. It was also sung by Paul Robeson, an African American actor and civil rights activist. "Pickaninny Heaven" was sung by Kate Smith as part of the move "Hello Everybody" She didn't write the song, simply sang it as part of her character in the movie. In my mind, this is not a question of moving on from an old tradition, but it is a question of ruining the reputation of a person who can't defend herself since she is 6 feet under. If you are going to trash a person who supposedly meant to much to the team, the least they could do is show us that they did a thorough investigation. For more perspective, take a historical figure like Lincoln and drop him into 2019 where none of us know who he is. Imagine he tweets that all black people should be sent back to Africa, which was his attitude during his time. You think he would be loved or run out on a rail? Point being, it is pretty unfair to judge past attitudes by today's "woke" standards. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I think it's important that all information is known before rushing to judgement.
  2. Per the Flyers, Morin will make his debut tonight. Very much looking forward to seeing what he can do, though I know full well that we will only get to see a small sample size. Still, it has been a very long road and I hope he is worth the wait!
  3. It's never too early for this stuff when the season ends and your team isn't in the playoffs! Need something to look forward to.
  4. Merciful end to the 2016-2017 50th anniversary season for the Flyers...We Welcome You!
  5. Claude Giroux and Jake Vorecek's arrival for the 2016-2017 season, we welcome you!
  6. Shots we took in the 2nd period on 10/25/14 - The Flyers
  7. And that's the irony of the situation. He left the team in a decent position with regards to having a good core to build around (Of course no cap space to do the actual building!), but to get there, he tore apart a pretty decent core that was already in place. Granted, he had been chipping away at that core in the previous years, doing exactly what your post just said. Homer had a few bright spots during his time as GM, but ultimately his philosophy brought the same results as the last 40 years.
  8. Yes, but do you honestly believe that keeping Richards and Carter would have brought a Cup to the Flyers? They would have remained good players to build around, but ultimately their departure is not the reason the Flyers have not won the Cup IMO. I think their trades have left this team is better shape when it comes to building a good team that is capable of sustained success in a couple years time. It is about time that this team looks to the future rather than the win now attitude. It obviously hasn't worked in 40 years
  9. For all the crap we give Homer about the bad deals and the poor cap situation he has left for Hexy, he has also left the Flyers in a decent position to grow a young group of kids into a winning team. Whether that was by design or by accident, this team actually has a nice young core to build around with more kids in the pipeline than we have seen in awhile. The Richards and Carter trades look better to me each year when you consider the long term picture. This team is certainly in no position to tank, nor should they. As long as Hexy sticks to his guns and doesn't trade away the kids for expensive vets, we have a lot to look forward to.
  10. Love this signing. Not because I am 100% sure that DZ will pan out here, but because it is a 1 year deal with a low cap hit and devoid of any NMC's. My mind is still having trouble understanding deals like this! Where is the 5 year 20 Million with a NMC???? I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone! As others have said, this is a low risk deal with the potential for high rewards. As others have suggested, his issues may have been system related in the past, Let's see how he does under Berube. Nice move by Hexy!
  11. Amen to that! 3rd person free is one of my favorite features of this place!
  12. True, but I can certainly see why the NHL would want a lot of those games to be nationally televised. Flyers-Pens especially. The Flyers have a lot of fans across the country and a lot of haters. That makes for great ratings.
  13. Mason may not be what JR considers an upper eschelon goalie, but I'm fairly certain the Flyers would have been Stanley Cup Champions in 2010 is he had been in net rather than Leighton. In fact, I don't think the series would have been close if Mason had been in net. A goalie doesn't have to be a superstar to be good enough to win a Cup. If a good goalie gives you a chance to win every night and limits bad goals and can cover up some defensive lapses with big saves, he will be good enough to win a cup with the right team in front of him. If the Flyers are able to put together a good D in front of Mason, I'm confident he will be good enough to win a Cup, unless of course he starts sliding back into the bad play of his Columbus days. Just my take on it
  14. From everything I saw, Bettman got the longest and most prolonged boos. As has been stated, that's common practice across the league. I don't recall seeing/hearing every single GM get booed, at least not by the entire building. I'm sure there were some boos every time any team but the Flyers drafted, but my God, people are acting as though the fans hurled threats, insults, beers, etc at every non-Flyer affiliated person. It certainly didn't come across as that bad on TV, at least in my opinion. Judging by what Bettman had told the Flyers and what someone posted from Bob McKenzie, the NHL felt the event was a big success.
  15. As great as the games have been, especially the results of the 1st 3 games, I am also longing for it to be over. Very interested to see how Hexy handles his 1st offseason. The sooner the Rangers lose, the happier I'll be!!!!
  16. Kings all the way for me. I don't hold any real animosity towards Carter or Richie, although it kills me to see them winning Cups elseware. Although, I'm so used to that by now that I'm pretty much numb to it. What I won't be able to tolerate is the Rangers fans coming to our building next year fresh off a Cup. They are insufferable as it is. I can only imagine them after winning a cup. I despise everything and anything Rangers, so I will be 100% behind the Kings for this one!
  17. You got your wish Andy! Mason was on tonight! Just got back from the game and I'm pumped! I predicted the Rags in 6 and I'm glad to be wrong, although I still don't feel great about game 7 at MSG. Still, this team has proven time and again that they are never dead and I pray that they prove me wrong again tomorrow! No matter what happens tomorrow, I feel so good about the direction this team is headed, so long as Homer doesn't mess it up by trading away half to core for Weber in the offseason! They have a goalie and they have a core to build around. F THE RANGERS AND LET'S GO FLYERS!!!!!!!!!!!
  18. The Rangers were the one team I feared most (Boston aside) in the first round because the Flyers just don't match up well with that team. They play the style of hockey that has killed Flyers teams since the 90's when the trap became the norm. We are obviously no longer living in the clutch and grab era, thank God, but this team still struggles to figure out how to beat very defensive minded teams. I don't think the Rangers are this far superior team as far as overall talent goes, but they play a system that the Flyers have so much trouble beating. It essance, it does make them the better team! The Flyers have shown that they are capable of beating the Rangers, but it is rarely a situation where they take control of the game and play 60 solid minutes of hockey with no fear of blowing it. When they are leading, it is always the feeling of one false move and the whole game turns in the Rags favor. I think we all have known this year year that this team is still not there yet. We hoped that maybe they would catch fire at the right time and make an improbable run, but facing the Rags has certainly made their jobs a lot harder. I do believe they are talented enough to win a playoff series this year, but never felt good that they had to do it against the Rags! It's not over yet and I can actually see them pulling out a close game tomorrow night, but ultimately falling at MSG in G7. A few lucky breaks/bounces and maybe I'm wrong and they win the series in 7. In any case, I like where this team is heading and I firmly beleive that they need to stick with the young guys they currently have on the roster. We have seen players like Simmonds and Voracek developing right before our eyes. Not time to give up on any of the kids just yet. Just need to find the right complimentary pieces to build around the core.
  19. Mason showed what a difference maker he can be. It is obvious that the Rangers are not going to give the Flyers O an inch, so to win this series, they are going to need more performances like this from their goalie. I totally appreciate the effort that Emery gave us in the 1st 3 games and I don't put all blame on his shoulders for the game 1 and 3 losses, but I feel a lot better with him on the bench. There is something to be said for how a team plays when their starter is b/w the pipes in the big games versus having their back up in the game. It was far from pretty, but they came together and pulled out a close one. They need to put together a better game if they want to take game 5 at MSG though. I have never liked that way the Flyers match up against the Rags, but if Mason can continue to play at this level and the Flyers can take advantage of the opportunities that they get, it is certainly a winnable series. Not going to be easy though. I originally picked the Rags in 6, so here is hoping and praying that the Flyers prove me wrong. Good night all and F THE RANGERS!
  20. What can I say....we are the eyes in the sky! Those higher seats do give a completely different perspective of the ice as compared to being on ice level though, so there is some merit to the "shoooot" at times. $33 million in salaries or not, those guys are human and they don't always make the right decision. There are some real chuckleheads in the stands though, some of whom will yell shoot as soon as any Flyer has the puck in the offensive zone, no matter what the situation is! It can be comical!
  21. You are a liar! I have a quote from Mason saying otherwise Mason then stated, "Please do not put that quote in bold, as it will give the message board junkies fodder to say I should sit this series out"
  22. Leighton only started 27 games that season while Mason has started 61 this year. Its not a really fair comparison. And I agree with FC, we had a different D in front of Boosh-Leighton than we have now. Too many factors to consider when digging into those stats. The eye test still works best for me in this case! haha
  23. I know what you're saying, but you tell me, who would you rather have, Boosh-Leighton or Mason-Emery? Leighton catches fire for a short stretch and then completely blows our chances for the Cup. If the Flyers had a goalie that could stop a puck in that series, they beat Chicago. Games 1 and 2 in Chi were such winnable games, but Leighton and Niemi must have each been paid off to blow the games because they were both trying their best to give it up! And Boosh, at that stage of career, is simply not as good as Mason right now. Stats can tell whatever story you want, but overall talent level has Mason above Boosh for me. Yes, the eye test is what I'm relying on!
  24. Oh trust me, I feel bad saying anything bad about Boosh. I genuinely liked him and would have loved for him to have succeeded, but at that late stage of his career it made for a bleak goaltending situation. I agree 100% that a bob-boosh tandem would have been head and shoulders better than bringing in the crazy cosmonaut. I'm far from a hater when it comes to Boosh, but if you can look me in the eye and tell me that a tandem of old Boosh and Leighton is not a scary thing in comparison to Mason-Emery, I'd say you need to get your head examined! I'm not ragging on the guy, I'm just being brutally honest when comparing the tandems of 2010 to the present
  25. And thank God Mason isn't Boosh! Isn't it scary to look back and think that Boosh, God love him, was the guy we were relying on to go deep in the playoffs? I really do like the guy and I wish he had panned out to be better than he was, but it really goes to show just how deep in the dumps we were are far as goaltending back then! Mason-Emery duo gives a comfort that i haven't felt as a Flyers fan since.......well, ever! I remember Pelle-Frose, but I was only 5-6 when Pelle died. I remember Hexy 1 (don't remember who was backing him up) well, but I was only 7 when they went to the finals against Edmonton and after that, he was never quite as good. Hexy 2-Snow duo had its moments, but you always felts like the other shoe would drop and obviously it dropped hard when they played Detroit!
