  1. The Instigator |Episode 18 Stop the Childish Celebration I am all for having fun when you play hockey. That is why we play the game..but what the Carolina Hurricanes have been doing after wins at home has me shaking my head. What is happening to this league. This is the most childish celebrations I have ever seen. Just when you thought that was the extent of the celebration. Dougie Hamilton took it to a new level by “flossing”…. What is next from the Carolina Hurricanes? PODCAST
  2. The Instigator |Episode 11 GOAL! Are you Kidding Me! Cam Ward allowed one of the weirdest goals ever last week. The puck was rung around the boards by Arizona Coyotes Alex Goligoski. Ward exited his net to stop the puck. The puck stuck in his skate, and Ward (not knowing where the puck was) slid to the front of the net in order to defend his foot slid into the net. The whistle sounded and the officials counted it as a good goal. I have a big problem with this one counting. LISTEN PODCAST
  3. Deadline Day Giants- Who Remains? Eric Staal: Eric Staal is probably the biggest name remaining for NHL Trade Deadline Day. Things are actually very quiet in Carolina. It has been reported that Staal still has not been asked to waive his no trade clause. With the recent fall of Carolina it would be hard to believe that they would just keep him and get nothing in return. I also have a hard time believing that he will resign in Carolina. If that was going to happen it would have happened by now. There is talk of the New York Rangers are showing extreme interest in Staal. This is not a huge surprise. Elliotte Freidman of SportsNet reported, “It could be his final home game (Sunday) against the Blues if he decides he wants to go.” Friedman expects that the New York Rangers will make a big pitch for the big forward. Adding Staal would really help the Rangers up the middle. Staal has 10 goals and 33 points in 63 games this year, and is a pending unrestricted free agent come July 1st. The decision is up to Staal, but I would be very surprised if he does not get traded. Loui Eriksson: Loui Eriksson is another pending unrestricted free agent that just may get dealt on or before Monday. This one is a little more interesting. Boston is making a playoff run, and really could use Eriksson’s scoring ability. The real question is, are they willing to risk getting nothing for him to use him the rest of the year? Eriksson was looking for a six-year contract, and Boston was offering three years. The gap is distant and it looks as though talks have quieted drastically. Teams have shown interest in Eriksson. The Dallas Stars would like him back. The St. Louis Blues, Minnesota Wild, Anaheim Ducks, Tampa Bay Lightning and Los Angeles Kings have reportedly called on his services. I think the best long-term move for the Bruins would be to move him for some picks, but it would be hard to sell this idea to Bruins fans who want to make a run at the Stanley Cup this year. 4. Carolina Hurricanes first line center Eric Staal is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, and it is hard to believe that the star will make it to free agency. All signs are showing that a contract will not be signed in Carolina. If a resigning were to happen I would think that it would have happened by now. The Hurricanes are off to a 19-18-7 (45 Points) record. Although they are just two points out of a wildcard position the prospect of the Hurricanes surging into a playoff position look dim. This would lead many to believe that Staal just may be the biggest fish available on trade deadline day. The 30-year-old year old Staal has been very quiet about the pending free agency. Staal is currently in his 12th season with the Hurricanes. The only team that the 6’4” center has ever played professional hockey for. He has been very loyal to the Hurricanes, and raised his one and only Stanley Cup there in 2006. Staal expiring contract carries a $8.25 million dollar cap hit. Although Staal is still perceived as a powerful first line center he does look to be in line for a pay reduction. In 44 games this year he has just 9 goals, and 19 assists. The 28 points is off his career standard, which leaves many wondering just how much this contract situation is affecting his play and mindset. According to Luke DeCock of the Raleigh News & Observer, Staal admitted that his pending free agency has weighted on him. Staal commented, “It’s been more challenging than I thought it would be, but I’m doing my best,” Staal said. “Doing my best to contribute and try and help this team win and play hard. I have a family. There’s things you think about. My brother’s playing here. There are a lot of different things you think about. You try not to worry about it too much, and play, and hopefully we can get on a little bit of a run here and go from there and let it sort itself out. We’ll see what happens.” With all signs pointing to Staal not resigning, it would benefit the Hurricanes to make a move sooner rather than later. The Montreal Canadiens once expressed interest in the big center, and do have some assets that the Hurricanes may be interested in. Two names that have surfaced have been Alex Galchenyuk (which looks unlikely) and goalie prospect Zach Fucale. The truth is all 30 teams are looking for a strong front line center. The real question is how much are they willing to give up to get him. The Hurricanes have his contact termination hurting his value, and Staal has his age and declining numbers working against him. The question is, will a team making a Stanley Cup run give up the farm for him on trade deadline day? INSIDE EDGE HOCKEY NEWS * Photo credit USAToday Sports Images
