Disappointing loss to Edmonton, but from what I saw Calgary played good Sutter hockey dominating physically and controlling most of the even strength play.

Really Edmonton did not have any answer to the size and toughness of Calgary, except to try to avoid confrontations - even Kassian wanted no part of any pushing and shoving, this really is Sutter tough team and week disciplined not taking any bad penalties, even the Rasmussen penalty on Yamamoto was not a bad penalty although it was the turning point score wise.

Overall, I'm happy with what Sutter done to make this team tougher and better overall - I'm very confident Calgary will beat Anaheim on Monday💪👍🔥

Ducks beat the Flames with OT winner

The Anaheim Ducks get the win over the Flames with great team play in overtime.

CALGARY, Alberta -- — Jamie Drysdale scored in overtime to give the Anaheim Ducks a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Monday night.

Drysdale tapped in a pass from Troy Terry at 3:26 of overtime for the winner.

“Troy kind of did all the work, made a great fake, great curl and drag and then slipped it through the guy, right on my tape, back door,” Drysdale said.

It was the first OT winner for the 19-year-old from Toronto.

“Awesome,” Drysdale said. “It’s obviously really exciting, especially being back here in Canada. It’s nice, even though the fans were cheering against us, the energy was real good. It’s nice to have fans back in the building.”

Cam Fowler and Rickard Rakell also scored for the Ducks, who started a four-game trip with a victory.

“We bent a fair amount, but we didn’t break,” Anaheim coach Dallas Eakins said.

Anaheim goaltender John Gibson made 41 saves. He sat out Friday’s loss to Minnesota with a lower-body-injury.

“To come out with this win, not only just being my first goal in overtime, this was a really big win for our group and it’ll set us up nicely moving forward into this road trip,” Drysdale said.

Blake Coleman scored in his debut with the Flames, and Elias Lindholm added a goal. Johnny Gaudreau had two assists, and Jacob Markstrom stopped 24 shots.

Calgary lost a second straight game putting 40-plus shots on the opposition’s net. The Flames generated 47 in a 5-2 season-opening loss in Edmonton on Saturday.

“We have 40 shots in both games, but we’ve got to get someone in front of the net,” Gaudreau said. “We’ve got to take the goalie’s eyes away and find a way to score some greasy goals.”

With Ducks defenseman Josh Manson serving high-sticking penalty with just under four minutes to go, Calgary’s power play couldn’t produce a go-ahead goal.

Rakell, on a give-and-go with Adam Henrique, pulled Anaheim even at 12:55 of the third period. Henrique fed an unchecked Rakell in the high slot. Rakell scored on a shot over Markstrom’s right pad.

Calgary led 2-1 at 3:52 of the second period on Lindholm’s second goal in as many games. He collected a cross-ice pass from Gaudreau and threaded a shot between Gibson’s pads from the faceoff dot.

Fowler pulled Anaheim even with a power-play goal at 15:54 of the opening period. He took a drop pass from Kevin Shattenkirk and scored past Markstrom’s right pad.

Coleman scored the first goal at 7:43 of the first. Gaudreau tapped the puck up to the winger in the neutral zone. Coleman fired a wrist shot under Gibson’s left arm.

Game notes

Calgary is without a captain. The Flames are rotating assistant captaincies among four players: Tkachuk, Mikael Backlund, Sean Monahan and Chris Tanev. …

Calgary with another loss after again dominating the play for vast majority of game, at least we got one point though.

Lucic fought Deslauriers and while no damage done to either, Lucic looked dangerous, I'm disappointed that he didn't get the C or A...

Coleman looked good in his first game and his goal scored was very clutch.

We better best Detroit on Thursday...

Markstrom shuts out Red Wings in Calgary's 3-0 win

ByAP
Updated: 5 hours ago

DETROIT, Mich. -- — Jacob Markstrom stopped all 33 shots Detroit took Thursday night in the Calgary Flames’ 3-0 victory over the Red Wings.

Markstrom recorded his ninth career shutout in his 12th season in the NHL. He’d allowed seven goals with an .881 save percentage in Calgary’s first two games, but the rangy goalie had an answer for every challenge in this game.

"Jacob, with the saves he had, slowed the game down for us,” Flames coach Darryl Sutter said. “I think he made important saves at critical times.”

Markstrom said he didn't like his last outing, "so it was important to have ... a good performance.”

The Flames, who never trailed, took control of the game midway through the second period.

Left wing Johnny Gaudreau set up the first goal by center Elias Lindholm by backhanding the puck through the skates of Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser. Lindholm received it in front of Alex Nedeljkovic and fired a shot over the goalie’s left shoulder for his third of the season at 10:06.

Calgary defenseman Erik Gudbranson, who assisted on that goal, did it again on Andrew Mangiapane’s goal about four minutes later. Gudbranson blasted a shot on Nedeljkovic, and Mangiapane backhanded the rebound into the net for his second of the season.

“Today, we went to the net,” Mangiapane said. “And that’s where goals are scored, right?”

Matthew Tkachuk added an empty-netter with about two minutes left in the game after Detroit pulled its goalie.

Detroit had scored three, four and six goals in its first three games, but couldn’t get the puck past Markstrom in this one.

“The Wings have been successful and they come out going hot,” Markstrom said. “I was prepared to be a lot better than I was the other night and improve every game. And the (defense) kept the rebounds away from them.”

Sutter noted that the Red Wings hadn't yet lost in regulation in the young season.

“They have a lot of energy and a lot of speed, and use the building to their advantage,” he said. "But once we got past that, we were pretty good tonight.”

Detroit ended up with a 33-28 advantage in shots. Fourteen of those came in the second period, especially with two power-play opportunities.

Defenseman Moritz Seider had one of Detroit's better chances when he fired a point-blank shot right into Markstrom’s midsection.

Detroit captain Dylan Larkin credited Markstrom's performance.

“The whole game felt really choppy. We have to be way sharper, but Calgary played a good road game," he said. "They hadn’t won yet, so they were desperate.”

In the third period, the Red Wings' first shot on net didn’t come until nearly eight minutes had passed.

“I thought we created enough chances in the first two period to score, but we didn’t score," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "In the third, they did a good job of finishing a road win. They put the puck in our zone and made us work 200 feet for everything. We didn’t shoot enough pucks.

"We didn’t handle their pressure good enough. When we (had) chances to attack, we didn’t attack. When we (had) chances to make plays, we didn’t make plays, and we turned the puck over too many times when we didn’t need to do that.”

Markstrom was the second-round pick of the Florida Panthers in 2008 and broke in with the Panthers before spending six seasons with the Vancouver Canucks. He joined Calgary last season, and had a career-high three shutouts.

Lindholm’s 2nd hat trick lifts Flames past Caps 4-3 in OT

Elias Lindholm scores three goals, including the overtime winner, vs. the Capitals.

ByAP

WASHINGTON -- — Elias Lindholm completed his second career hat trick with a one-timer 2:46 into overtime, and the Calgary Flames beat the Washington Capitals 4-3 on Saturday.

Lindholm’s fourth, fifth and sixth goals of the season helped the Flames to a second consecutive victory, this one coming after blowing an early 3-0 lead. Washington had won two in a row.

Andrew Mangiapane added his third on the power play to open the scoring for the Flames, who gave all of their first-period advantage back by the end of the second.

Calgary's Dan Vladar made 22 saves and Johnny Gaudreau had two assists, including the final feed to Lindholm for an effort that caught the body of goaltender Ilya Samsonov before trickling over the line.

Alex Ovechkin scored his fifth goal and had an assist for the Capitals, who remain unbeaten in regulation but have lost both their overtime games this season.

Evgeny Kuznetsov posted his fourth goal to begin Washington’s comeback, and Martin Fehervary scored his first in the NHL. Ovechkin moved to 735 career goals, bringing him within six of Brett Hull for fourth on the NHL list.

Samsonov replaced Vitek Vanecek to start the second period. He stopped 13 straight shots before he was beaten in overtime.

Lindholm and Kuznetsov traded short-handed goals on either side of the first intermission.

The Capitals closed to 3-2 when Fehervary took a pass from Tom Wilson and beat Vladar inside his right post from near the opposite faceoff circle.

Then Ovechkin leveled the game inside the final two minutes of the period, reaching a loose puck after an unforced turnover and beating Vladar to his near post on a break down the left.

Lindholm is one game shy of tying a club record for consecutive games scoring a goal to begin the season. Gary Roberts scored in the Flames’ opening five games of the 1989-90 campaign.

Really like how Sutter has made this team more responsible and just better overall, even in the losses and every game Calgary had played hard and played a noticeably better system of hockey than before.

They should be able to beat NY tomorrow.

Flames 5 Rangers 1

Mangiapane scores 2 goals to help Flames beat Rangers 5-1

Andrew Mangiapane scores on the power play for Flames

ByAP
Updated: 8 hours ago

NEW YORK -- — Andrew Mangiapane scored twice and the Calgary Flames beat the New York Rangers 5-1 on Monday night for their third straight win.

Blake Coleman and Mikael Backlund each had a goal and an assist, and Christopher Tanev also scored for Calgary. Johnny Gaudreau got his seventh assist of the season, and Jacob Markstrom stopped 28 shots to improve to 7-2-1 in his career against New York.

Dryden Hunt scored for the Rangers, who had won four straight — all on the road. Igor Shesterkin, making his fifth start, finished with 32 saves.

Trailing 2-0 after 40 minutes, the Rangers got on the scoreboard early in the third period. Markstrom stopped the initial shot by Jacob Trouba, but Hunt corralled a rebound in front and put it past the goalie for his first of the season at 5:25.

Coleman restored Calgary's two-goal lead less than three minutes later as he backhanded the rebound of his own shot past Shesterkin for his second.

Backlund made it 4-1 with 8 1/2 minutes left as he scored into the top left corner from the right circle for his first.

“It was a great response,” Mangiapane said. "You never want to give up goals, especially late there. It was a good response by our guys to change the momentum. A big goal by Coles and followed up by Backs. Good two key goals there for us to lock it down there.”

Mangiapane got his second of the night, scoring on a rebound on the power play from the right side with just over five seconds remaining. It was his fifth of the season and 10th in his last nine games, dating to last season.

“He’s really good around the net. He has great work ethic. He has good hands,” Flames coach Darryl Sutter said.

Leading 1-0 after one period, the Flames doubled their lead early in the second. Mangiapane intercepted a pass by Patrik Nemeth from behind the Rangers net and beat Shesterkin from the right side at 2:09.

Mika Zibanejad had a chance to get the Rangers on the scoreboard after a Flames turnover as he skated up the ice with Alexis Lafreniere, but was denied by Markstorm with about 6 1/2 minutes left in the middle period.

Shesterkin made a nice glove stop on a slap shot by Tyler Pitlick about 40 seconds later.

Markstrom stopped a wraparound try by Trouba with just more than two minutes to go, and then denied his backhand follow.

Calgary outshot New York 15-7 in the first period. Shesterkin’s best save of the period came on an attempt by Sean Monahan in front with 3:15 remaining after a giveaway by the goalie.

“We just made so many bad turnovers the first period, trying to make cute plays instead of strong plays up the boards that really cost us, even though it was only 1-0,” Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said. “We made a lot of turnovers and Shesty had to be unbelievable that first period. That really cost us the hockey game even though we got back in the third period, made it to 2-1.”

Tanev got the Flames on the scoreboard on a rush with 1:10 left in the opening period as he took a pass from Gaudreau and beat Shesterkin from the right circle on the glove side for his first of the season. Elias Lindholm got his first assist and seventh point on the play.

“It was a good first period for us," Sutter said. “The Rangers were coming off a road trip. They probably weren't as sharp as they wanted to be early.”

The Rangers were down two players for much of the first. Rugged forward Ryan Reaves went to the dressing room early in the period after an apparent injury to his left leg, and defenseman Ryan Lindgren joined him by the midpoint after blocking a shot with his foot.

Lindgren was back on the bench late in the period, and returned to the ice in the second. Reaves was also on the bench at the start of the second, but did not play again.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Rangers went 0 for 2 on the power play and are 3 for 26 this season. ... The Flames were 1 for 2 with the man advantage, improving to 3 for 14.

Flames win fourth straight road game

Calgary keeps up its winning ways with its fourth straight road win against New Jersey.

ByAP
Updated: 2 hours ago

NEWARK, N.J. -- — The Calgary Flames keep winning on the road, and Andrew Mangiapane's scoring is a major reason.

Mangiapane had two of Calgary’s four goals in the first period, and the Flames extended their winning streak to four games with a 5-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.

Milan Lucic, Elias Lindholm and Matthew Tkachuk also scored for the Flames. Calgary backup goalie Dan Vladar made 27 saves.

“We scored on some early opportunities and I think that was the difference in the game," said Mangiapane, who also scored twice in Monday night's 5-1 win over the New York Rangers. "We had a good start. We knew we needed to come out strong and get our legs underneath us.”

Pavel Zacha had two goals and Dawson Mercer also scored for the Devils.

Nico Daws allowed three goals on seven shots in his second career start before being lifted in favor of Scott Wedgewood, who finished with 20 saves.

“We just lost wall battles. Our puck battles, our 50-50 battles weren’t good," Devils coach Lindy Ruff said. "A lot of our pain was self-inflicted. They got to pucks quicker. They deserved to get the lead."

The Flames have won all four games on their current road trip, which concludes with a matchup at Pittsburgh on Thursday. The Devils were completing a season-opening five-game homestand in which they won three times.

"We played well against a young team that hasn’t played a road game yet," Flames coach Darryl Sutter said.

The victory was the seventh straight for Calgary over New Jersey. It was the first meeting between the teams since Nov. 7, 2019, when the Flames won 5-2 in Calgary.

Calgary improved to 3-0-0 against Metropolitan Division teams and 4-0-0 at teams from the Eastern Conference thus far this season.

“We’re learning a lot to play the right way," added Sutter, who is coaching the Flames for the second time after leading the Los Angeles Kings to Stanley Cup titles in 2012 and 2014. "This team works really hard and is playing together and playing things right.”

Lucic opened the scoring at 6:35 of the first. Sprung on a pass by defenseman Eric Gudbranson, Lucic skated in alone down the left wing and rifled a shot past Daws for his first goal this season. Defenseman Oliver Kylington, playing his 100th career game, assisted.

“Breakaway speed? You know, actually I think it started as a turnover and Eric made a quick up-play and I got a fortunate bounce," Lucic said. ”Its always nice to get the first one, especially on the back-to-back. It starts with the players, but also the coaching staff. Especially Darryl, he puts a lot of emphasis on us having a good start."

Mangiapane made it 2-0 at 10:08 with an unassisted goal.

Lindholm increased the lead to 3-0 on the power play with his seventh of the season at 12:10 .

At that point, Daws, a rookie, was lifted from his second career start. Daws was coming off a 2-1 overtime win over Buffalo on Saturday in his NHL debut. Ruff said this young netminder generally wasn't at fault for his team's early deficit.

"If you’re going to give up a breakaway without even letting him get into the flow of the game, you can’t criticize the goalie tonight," Ruff said.

With the goal, Lindholm’s points streak reached six games. Rasmus Andersson and Johnny Gaudreau assisted.

Mangiapane greeted Wedgewood with his second goal of the game and seventh this season to make it 4-0 at 12:56. The 25-year-old forward said his recent scoring prowess is mostly a byproduct of teammates' hard work.

“Players here are just kind of finding me. It’s definitely nice," he said. ”Obviously, it is more important to get the two points.”

The Flames outshot the Devils 10-4 in the first period and 12-9 in the second.

Zacha scored New Jersey’s first at 7:01 of the second, his third of the season.

In the third, Tkachuk made it 5-1 with a power-play goal at 11:18, with assists to Lindholm and Sean Monahan.

Mercer scored his second of the season at 11:51, before Zacha scored his second of the game on the power play at 16:59 to complete the scoring.

“We didn’t compete first couple of shifts and teams like that can kind of convert it to goals," Zacha said. “We left our goalie there without any help.”

Vladar won for the second time this season.

Lucic, who was a member of the Boston Bruins when they won the Stanley Cup in 2011, said he is already liking the makeup of these new-look Flames after Calgary missed the playoffs last season.

“We added some veteran guys and we are doing a great job playing as a team," he said. ”That is something the good teams I have been on have had. That’s something we have to continue to work on moving forward to continue to be a good team.”

WELCOME BACK

The Devils gave Flames forward Blake Coleman a video tribute early in the first period. The 29-year-old Coleman was a fan favorite in his four seasons with the Devils. He was traded to Tampa Bay in February 2020 and went on to win two Stanley Cups with the Lightning. He signed a six-year, $29.4 million contract with the Flames in July.

The Flames get four goals in a dominant 4-0 win over the Penguins.

Updated: 5 hours ago

PITTSBURGH -- — Jacob Markstrom and the Calgary Flames put an emphatic end to a lengthy, successful five-game trip.

Markstrom stopped 45 shots for his second shutout in his last three starts, and the Flames beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0 Thursday night.

“We have a long flight,” Markstrom said. “It always (stinks) to travel after a loss. It was huge, obviously.”

Markstrom recorded his second shutout in five games this season and the 10th of his career. Playing his 12th NHL season and second with the Flames, Markstrom has stopped 136 of his last 137 shots faced.

Johnny Gaudreau scored his first goal in the opening period, and Blake Coleman, Dillon Dube and Milan Lucic scored in the third as Calgary swept a five-game trip. The Flames never trailed during the road trip, leading for 234:05 overall, and outscored the opposition 21-7 on the trip.

Calgary hasn’t lost in regulation since the season opener in Edmonton. The Flames are the third team in NHL history to sweep a road trip of five-plus games while never trailing in each contest, joining Chicago in 1996 and St. Louis in 2017.

“To end this trip on a good note, (then) it’s a great road trip instead of just a good one,” Markstrom said. “That’s a big win and something to build on.”

Casey DeSmith, who made his first start since Oct. 14, stopped 31 shots for Pittsburgh. The Penguins have lost two straight after starting the season with points in their first five games.

Coleman gave Calgary a 2-0 lead just 1:04 into the third period when his point shot through a crowd beat DeSmith. Mikael Backlund recorded an assist for his 400th NHL point.

Dube continued a three-game point streak with his first of the year at 10:15, and Lucic scored his second of the season 1:29 later, at 11:44 of the third.

Gaudreau put a shot over DeSmith’s glove on a breakaway for his first goal of the season at 7:22 of the opening period.

“It’s nice to find one,” Gaudreau said. “It’s been a while.”

Coleman was whistled for high sticking at 12:15 of the first period and defenseman Erik Gudbranson a four-minute double minor for the same penalty at 12:34.

That gave Pittsburgh a two-man advantage for 1:41, but the Penguins came up empty, as the Flames held a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes. Calgary outscored the opposition 11-0 during the first period of its five-game trip.

“Obviously, we’d like to score there,” Penguins’ coach Mike Sullivan said of the 5-on-3. “It potentially could be the difference in the game if we do. I thought the guys had a significant amount of looks.”

Markstrom kept it a 1-0 game entering the third period with a desperation diving stick save on Penguins forward Drew O’Connor during a scramble in front of the net in the second.

“I saw it on the replays in the intermission and I realized he made that save,” Gaudreau said. “Just a crazy, crazy incredible save.”

STREAKS SNAPPED

Elias Lindholm and Andrew Mangiapane saw their respective six- and four-game point streaks end for the Flames.

Mangiapane has six goals in his last five games, while Lindholm has seven goals and eight points in his last seven.

Mangiapane had a chance to set a franchise record for the longest goal streak to open a season. In his last 18 games overall, including the IIHF World Hockey Championship where he won gold and was named tournament MVP for Canada, Mangiapane has 19 goals, including eight game-winners and 23 points.

JOHNNY HOCKEY

Gaudreau extended a six-game point streak with his first-period goal.

Gaudreau, who has one goal and nine assists in his last six games, has 32 points in his last 23 games overall.

Gaudreau’s 504 points are 10th all-time in franchise history, just one behind Gary Roberts. Gaudreau is also tied with Kent Nilsson for eighth in team history with 333 career assists. He’s two back from Paul Reinhart for seventh.

Game # 8

Flames 4 Flyers 0

Markstrom, Flames blank Flyers 4-0 for 6th straight victory

ByAP
Updated: 1 hour ago

CALGARY, Alberta -- — Sean Monahan has no complaints over his reduced role this season as the Calgary Flames rattle off wins.

Monahan had a goal and an assist and Jacob Markstrom made 20 saves as the Calgary Flames blanked the Philadelphia Flyers 4-0 Saturday night for their sixth straight win.

Matthew Tkachuk, Johnny Gaudreau and Mikael Backlund (empty net) also scored for Calgary (6-1-1).

While centering Calgary’s fourth line with veteran wingers Milan Lucic and Trevor Lewis has been a major change for Monahan, the Flames’ third-highest paid player at $6.3 million has remained on the team's top power-play unit.

Against the Flyers, that’s where he did his damage, scoring the eventual winner and setting up Tkachuk’s insurance goal in the third.

“It’s a team game and when you’re part of a team, you’ve got to accept your role and do the best job you can,” said Monahan, a three-time 30-goal scorer. “We’ve got a good team, we’re winning games, and I have no complaints.”

Coach Darryl Sutter is pleased with the way Monahan has handled his role with the club.

“He’s been awesome,” Sutter said. “He’s got a great attitude and works hard. I’ve said it many times including in the dressing room, we’re not a top-heavy line-up. We’ve got to spread it out and have everybody accept their role and then go from there.”

The Flames were coming off a five-game road trip in which they never trailed and won all games by a combined score of 21-7.

“It’s a good start. We’re in a good position so far, but I don’t think anyone is happy,” Markstrom said. “Everybody that was here last year remembers that sour taste of last season. It was not fun at all. Especially not winning hockey games. So everybody’s hungry.”

Coming off a 45-save shutout over Pittsburgh on Thursday, Markstrom earned his third shutout in his last four starts. The 31-year-old Swede improved to 4-1-1 with a .957 save percentage.

“The other night was more physical, but, mentally you were in it. You had a lot of shots and you can see a lot of pucks and you get to feel the puck,” Markstrom said. “Today was more mental. Just stay really focused and don’t get derailed. Watch our guys play a great game in front of me.”

Carter Hart made 32 saves for Philadelphia (4-2-1). Claude Giroux was held pointless for the first time this season and his six-game point streak ended.

“It’s disappointing when the team puts an effort like that in front of (Hart) when realistically he’s the only reason it ended up the score it was. He made some unbelievable saves,” Flyers center Travis Konecny said.

The Flyers dropped the final game of their Western Canada road trip after picking up wins in Edmonton and Vancouver.

“You’ve got to give credit to where credit is due. They’re playing an extremely tight checking hockey game where there’s not a lot of room on the ice,” Flyers coach Alain Vigneault said.

“When the team plays that way, you’ve got to make plays offensively. Your execution has got to be at its best and obviously they took that away from us tonight. They made it very difficult.”

After a tight-checking, scoreless first period in which Calgary outshot Philadelphia 8-4, the Flames turned it up in the second and had the Flyers continuously trapped in their own end.

The relentless pressure led to the Flyers taking two minor penalties — both infractions drawn by Tkachuk — and the second one, an interference penalty on Rasmus Ristolainen, proved costly as Monahan redirected a centering pass from Rasmus Andersson. The goal at 9:07 came on the 12th consecutive shot to open the second period.

It was the first goal of the season for Monahan.

The score remained 1-0 until Tkachuk gave the Flames some insurance at 8:30 of the third period, making it 2-0 on Calgary’s second power-play goal of the game, neatly converting a slick passing sequence with Elias Lindholm and Monahan.

After Backlund scored into an empty net, Gaudreau added his second of the season with two minutes remaining, beating Hart inside the goal post.

It was a dominant performance defensively from the Flames. The Flyers entered the game averaging more than four goals per game.

Flames are playing great, congrats. I got to see Markstrom play in the AHL with the Rochester Amerks when he was coming up. We also got to know him on a personal level from team functions for season ticket holders. Great kid back then, was my youngest sons favorite player. Knew he would be special.

Markstrom is the definition of a late bloomer took him awhile to come around and I always found it strange when it seemed he is hitting his stride that is Vancouver let's him go whatever.

He is playing well as well as the team in front of him but hard to think he will maintain his 947% throughout the season.

Guess we'll keep an eye on them.

Who knows they could be legit.

CALGARY, Alberta -- — Matt Duchene scored at 1:37 of overtime, giving the Nashville Predators a 3-2 win over Calgary on Tuesday night and snapping the Flames six-game win streak.

“Probably top-five most tired I’ve ever been during a shift,” Duchene said. “I was a bit of a tripod in the d-zone there.”

On a two-on-one rush following a stretch of extended pressure from the Flames, Mikael Granlund fed Duchene, who lifted a shot over Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom as he slid across.

Duchene had been thinking of heading to the bench when teammate Mattias Ekholm fell.

“I’m like, ‘Oh, I’ll hang in it’ and (Granlund) put a great pass on my stick and I was just able to get a shot off,” Duchene said.

Duchene had a goal and an assist and Predators starter Juuse Saros stopped 38 shots in the win.

Luke Kunin scored his first of the season and Filip Forsberg added a goal for Nashville (5-4-0), which has won four straight. Granlund had two assists.

“We got unbelievable goaltending,” Granlund said. “We were not even close to our best tonight.”

Matthew Tkachuk and Oliver Kylington scored for Calgary (6-1-2). The Flames fell to 1-0-1 in a five-game homestand.

Markstrom stopped 19 shots in the loss.

The Flames trailed 2-1 after two periods despite a 28-14 edge in shots.

Calgary continued to press and drew even at 3:20 when Kylington jumped into the rush, took a pass from Chris Tanev, and sent a wrist shot off the crossbar and in behind Saros.

The sequence began with Andrew Mangiapane patiently maintaining the puck in the offensive zone while surrounded by Predators, allowing his linemates to complete a change and eventually get the puck to Tanev.

The first period was wide open and featured several odd-man rushes by the Flames, who ran up a 20-9 edge in shots.

In one stretch, the Predators surrendered three breakaways in a two-minute span with Blake Coleman, Dillon Dube, or Matthew Tkachuk failing to convert and break what was then a 1-1 tie.

Shortly after, the Predators regained the lead when Forsberg got the puck near the dot and fired a shot inside the far post, past Markstrom.

The Flames entered the game 6-0-1 when they scored first, but it was Nashville opening the scoring Tuesday.

At 10:11 of the first period, Ryan Johansen beat Mikael Backlund on a faceoff, pulling the puck back to Alexandre Carrier at the blueline. Carrier’s rising wrist shot was redirected out of the air by Kunin for his first goal of the season.

It was the first time Calgary trailed had trailed in a game since the season-opener. The Flames didn’t take long to tie it.

Monahan’s swipe at a rebound deflected off Roman Josi’s skate and bounced off Tkachuk and in for a power-play goal at 11:49.

“I was never worried that we weren’t going to get that game to overtime. I actually thought the way it was going, we were going to win it in regulation,” said Tkachuk. “But anything can happen three on three and they got the extra point.”

Calgary has points in eight straight games after dropping its season-opener to Edmonton.

“It’s still a step for us. It’s a battle-back point. You come from behind in the third, it’s still a good point,” Flames coach Darryl Sutter said. “In the past, this team wouldn’t have got a point.”

Yep, Calgary outplayed them badly, those 3 missed breakaways were unbelievable...bad luck all around after Ritchie got knocked down in the fight and hopefully he'll be alright...

Thinking back to the fight, I liked how Tkachuk went over to ask Borowiecki where he thought he was going when leaving the rink to repair his hand, this shows good leadership from Tkachuk to remind Borowiecki that Calgary had line up waiting to fight him for beating Ritchie.

Tkachuk even in interviews is maturing into a good leader, doing and saying all the right things to keep team intense after losing Ritchie - and it showed with the way Calgary out worked Nashville afterwards.

CALGARY, Alberta -- — Jamie Benn scored at 2:59 of overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night.

Benn took a drop pass from Joe Pavelski and sent a shot just inside the goal post and past goalie Jacob Markstrom.

“Just a simple cross and drop,” Benn said. “We’ve been trying to work on things for 3-on-3 overtime. Just worked out.”

Denis Gurianov, Blake Comeau and Tyler Seguin also scored, Miro Heiskanen had three assists, and Anton Khudobin made 30 saves. Dallas snapped a four-game winless streak to improve to 4-4-2.

Dallas has earned three of four possible points on its road trip, which concludes Sunday in Vancouver against the Canucks.

Milan Lucic, Matthew Tkachuk and Nikita Zadorov scored for the Flames, and Markstrom had 24 saves. Calgary is 6-1-3, earning points in nine games in a row.

Zadorov tied it at with 4:57 left in regulation. The defenseman fired a shot through a screen for his first goal in 37 games dating to Feb. 28 of last season.

“We had some guys ... when you don’t have your A game, you better have a good B game. Some guys tonight didn’t have either,” Flames coach Darryl Sutter said.

“We’re not going to win unless everybody is on top of their game.”

Game # 11

Flames 6 NYR 0

Gaudreau, Markstrom lead Flames to 6-0 win over Rangers

CALGARY, Alberta -- — Johnny Gaudreau had two goals and an assist, Jacob Markstrom made 22 saves for his league-best fourth shutout of the season and the Calgary Flames extended their point streak to 10 games with a 6-0 win over the New York Rangers on Saturday night.

Matthew Tkachuk had a goal and three assists to stretch his point streak to six games, and Sean Monahan, Brad Richardson and Milan Lucic also scored for Calgary. The Flames improved to 7-0-3 since a season-opening loss to Edmonton for their longest point streak since an 11-game run from Dec. 13, 2017 to Jan. 25, 2018.

“The atmosphere was great,” said Tkachuk, who topped off his big night with a highlight-reel goal from between his legs. “We’ve had way too many overtime losses here at home and we really needed a win to get the Saddledome buzzing a little bit and get the fans involved.”

Igor Shesterkin had 31 saves to fall to 5-2-2 for the Rangers, who lost their second straight and finished 1-1-2 on a four-game trip. New York was swept in the season series after also losing 5-1 to Calgary at home on Oct. 25.

“We were obviously pretty bad tonight,” New York coach Gerard Gallant said. “It’s been a grind and tonight, I’m glad we’re done playing Calgary. Put it that way.”

Calgary had lost three of its last four home games in extra time, but this game was put away early.

“It’s always fun to play home and I feel like personally, too, I haven’t played my best here and would have wanted a couple more wins at home. But we got a big one tonight and the rink was buzzing,” said Markstrom, who improved to 5-1-3.

Markstrom had a big stop early in the second period to preserve a 1-0 lead. Chris Kreider, who entered the night tied for third in the NHL with eight goals, was set up in the slot by Barclay Goodrow on a rush, but was denied by the goalie.

Markstrom added a couple more eye-popping glove stops in the third, robbing Ryan Strome and Mika Zibanejad.

“He can obviously make those saves, but it’s the ones that are hard that we know that are hard that he makes look so easy and he’s doing it each and every night for us right now,” Tkachuk said of Markstrom.

Monahan gave the Flames their lead with 4 minutes to go in the first period, and Calgary took control with goals just over two minutes apart midway through the second.

At 9:15, Richardson got his first of the season when he corraled Oliver Kylington's shot off the end boards and shoveled it inside the near post. Kylington’s assist extended his point streak to a career-best six games.

Calgary made it 3-0 at 11:19. Noah Hanifin misfired on a slap shot from the point, but the three-hopper on net couldn’t be controlled by Shesterkin and Gaudreau ended up banging in the loose puck from the side of the net.

The Flames then sealed it with three in the third. Gaudreau backhanded in his second of the night and fourth of the season as he cut to the net off the wing at 6:42, Lucic notched his fourth with 6:47 left and Tkachuk went between his legs for a highlight-reel effort with 5:04 remaining.

“Every game we’re going to go back and look at the mistakes and take the lesson and leave the mistakes, but right now this one stings a lot,” Kreider said. “Tonight we didn’t trust the system.”

After a disappointing season a year ago in which Tkachuk scored 16 goals in 56 games, he’s got six goals in 11 games this season. That includes goals in four straight games and a six-game point streak in which he’s notched five goals and nine points.

“He’s made a difference on this team,” said Flames coach Darryl Sutter. “Give him full marks tonight because his line struggled the last game and he took it on tonight and he carried the line.”

The Scotiabank Saddledome crowd of 15,879 was as loud as they’ve been all season and it started from the outset, loudly booing Adam Fox every time the Rangers' defenseman touched the puck. It was in response to the Flames' third-round pick in 2016 forcing a trade away from Calgary due to his unwillingness to sign with the team.

It looked briefly like Fox would get his revenge when he appeared to score the tying goal with 1:43 remaining in the first, in which afterwards he brought his glove up to his ear as he faced the crowd during his celebration.

But the volume of the booing intensified as video review showed that Samuel Blais had preceded the puck into the zone on the Rangers rush, resulting in the goal being waved off. As the officials made the announcement, the video screen zoomed in on Fox on the bench, causing the fans to erupt.
