Jake DeBrusk Requests Trade

NOVEMBER 29, 2021 AT 5:01 PM CDT | BY GAVIN LEE

The Boston Bruins made Jake DeBrusk a healthy scratch again over the weekend, and it appears as though there is finally a split coming between the two sides. Ryan Rishaug of TSN confirmed with DeBrusk’s agent that he has requested a trade out of Boston, and Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet notes that the two are working to find him a fresh start.

USATSI_17046898-241x300.jpgDeBrusk, 25, is one of the infamous three first-round draft picks the Bruins made in 2015 and for quite some time, was regarded as the only one that had “worked out.” While Jakub Zboril and Zachary Senyshyn toiled in the minor leagues, DeBrusk was playing in the NHL, recording 62 goals over his first three seasons in the league.

Those numbers have dropped considerably since the start of 2020-21 though, with just eight goals and 20 points in 58 games over the last two seasons. With that decreased production the winger has also found inconsistent playing time, moving up and down the lineup.

On the second season of a two-year, $7.35MM ($4.675MM AAV) deal signed in November 2020, DeBrusk can become a restricted free agent once again next summer. It’s just a “could” because whatever team owns his rights at that point would need to issue him a $4.41MM qualifying offer just to retain them as an RFA. That’s certainly not a slam dunk given the way he’s played recently, especially when it would also come with the risk of arbitration.

Still, it’s easy to see how a team would think they can squeeze a top-six player out of DeBrusk. He has all the skills to score at a high level, as shown by his 27-goal season in 2018-19, he can be a physical presence when he wants to be, and there’s powerplay upside if deployed properly. If the asking price isn’t prohibitive, both contending teams and those that are rebuilding could be interested in the winger.

I was thinking a team like Minnesota or Chicago might be a good trade partner with Boston.

The Wild have Kevin Fiala, whom it seems hasn't seen eye to eye with head coach Dean Evason at times, and has even seen his ice time reduced.
Both Fiala (5.1M) and DeBrusk (3.675M) are shoot first guys who SHOULD be doing better than they are, yet aren't. Both are 25 years old, and both are RFA's at season's end.

Chicago might be a fit with them sending Dylan Strome over to the Bruins.
Strome represents a bit bigger body than DeBrusk, which of course, the Bruins like, DeBrusk could fit in some of Chicago's other young forwards who are more about offense and shooting.
Dylan Strome has also had a hard time sticking in the lineup.

Strome is 24, can also play center, is a 3M cap hit, and also will be an RFA at season's end.

Just off the top of my head looking around the Central.
Could be some other fits in the West too...maybe with Seattle, Edmonton, or Los Angeles who seem to have comparable players to DeBrusk.
Whether they want to make changes to their lineups, however, is another matter.

DeBrusk has had many, many, many chances to get in and STAY in the line-up and has failed. I am quite sure he does not care for being sat and called out publicly.

Requests trade, and i can only hope the bruins get an adventageous return, but at this point, if the got a 3rd rounder/prospect for him, i'd be happy.

Just think what could have been back in the 2015 Draft, but the Bruins got it as wrong as you can get.  Remember this is the  draft they draft back-to-back-to back with picks #13/#14/#15.

 #13 Jakub Zboril

 #14 Jake DeBrusk

 #15 Zach Senyshyn

To my knowledge neither Zboril or Senyshyn have done anything in the NHL .....

Here is what happened after pick #15 ......

Most draft aficionados can tell you what happened next.

At 16, the New York Islanders took Mathew Barzal.

At 17, the Winnipeg Jets took Kyle Connor.

At 18, the Ottawa Senators took Thomas Chabot.

At 20, the Minnesota Wild took Joel Eriksson Ek.

At 22, the Washington Capitals took Ilya Samsonov.

At 23, the Vancouver Canucks took Brock Boeser.

At 24, the Philadelphia Flyers took Travis Konecny.

At 28, the Islanders took Anthony Beauvillier.

And probably, the greatest miss of all, was Sebastian Aho to Carolina at 35.

That is a lot of talent the Bruins past up on.  Yeah, I know the draft is a crap shoot, but I believe the 2015 Draft was one of the deeper drafts. In short, it was a draft that could have set up the Bruins for a smooth transition from the Patrice Bergeron/Brad Marchand era to the next generation if they’d got it even close to right — and based on the talent that was available afterward, it almost seems impossible to think they could get it so wrong.

Just some food for thought ......

Ya ya...thanks for the reminder.

It's pretty sad though, and when it comes to that draft, it's gonna set them back for seasons to come, huge swing and miss.

Pretty sure Philly could have turned Barzal/Connor/Chabot/Aho into the same quality the Bruins picked after a few years of "development".
