Burke the media whore at it again

Brian Burke, who seems to love to hear his own voice or read his quotes more than anything, is at it again. This time he's gone to the CBC to complain about comments Don Cherry made about his buddy/coach Ron Wilson. Cherry has been knocking Wilson for throwing players under the bus when they lose (with him it's THEY lost and WE won). Recently they had a Canadian Forces appreciation night and Wilson seemed to be the only person there who couldn't be bothered to applaud, Cherry is pro-troops and mentioned it. The result was Burke crying to the media.

Both these guys are idiots in their own right, but at least Cherry is entertaining.

TORONTO - Don Cherry is not impressed Brian Burke "went behind my back" to complain about him to the CBC and says the Maple Leafs' president did it to "deflect" attention away from his team's losing ways.

"I thought this stuff was over but it is quite obvious what Brian is doing," said Grapes. "He is trying to deflect from his team's performance missing the playoffs three years running at my expense and to be a hero to his players at my expense."

Burke told QMI Agency this week he "raised the issue quietly and professionally," and while he likes Cherry, his weekly "vicious and cutting" remarks on players and Leafs coach Ron Wilson have "got to stop."

What "got to stop" actually means is unclear since uncensored Cherry has had a widely watched platform on CBC for three decades.

Others have certainly tried and failed to silence him.

Controversial hockey legend Cherry said he will not be muzzled, adding "if it's true" Burke went to CBC management, then "he's got to get in line to get me."

Burke called the fact that there was a "leak" of his private concerns "nuts."

But Tuesday, it was clear Cherry was upset with Burke's admission that he formally lodged his concerns.

"He had a meeting with CBC behind my back and accuses them of leaking the meeting," said Grapes. "I never heard one word from CBC about the meeting. Gospel."

CBC spokesman Jeff Keay did not respond to an e-mail asking for a comment.

One wonders if the real end game of this tussle is more about Bell and Rogers now owning the Leafs and a potential desire to have those Saturday Night Leafs games on their own network down the road instead of on the state broadcaster?

"To get those games on Saturday nights would be like planting a money tree for Rogers and Bell," said one media commentator.

But in such a scenario, with Burke showing this kind of anger toward a pundit, would criticism or opinions be tolerated with a fully controlled broadcast?

Others say this battle is not about TV rights and more about ego and power and a once strong friendship now severed. There are many examples of fallouts between bombastic Burke and members of the media.

Cherry, sources say, upset Burke with his Coach's Corner comment that Leafs coach Ron Wilson "couldn't care less" when he did not join the mass applause for the troops at the Canadian Armed Forces appreciation night last month.

"I guess Brian is mad at me for criticizing his coach for not acknowledging our 500 troops at the New York Rangers-Toronto game where they honoured our troops. I did the introduction at the Leafs' invitation," explained Cherry.

Cherry has been critical of Wilson's "throw his players under the bus" coaching style.

Wilson has in the past responded by saying: "I'll compare my record with Don Cherry."

But Tuesday, Cherry said: "I have to admit I lost twice to Montreal in the finals and lost again to Montreal in the semifinals seventh game in overtime but maybe Ron is right because since he has been with the Leafs he hasn't lost a playoff game."

Nice little zinger by Cherry there at the end:

Wilson has in the past responded by saying: "I'll compare my record with Don Cherry."

But Tuesday, Cherry said: "I have to admit I lost twice to Montreal in the finals and lost again to Montreal in the semifinals seventh game in overtime but maybe Ron is right because since he has been with the Leafs he hasn't lost a playoff game."
