Yandle's Iron Man Record

The iron man record is nice, but what is his streak of entirely ineffective games up to?    I mean, even I can put on a uniform and skate around with absolutely no purpose (I have experience; see resume).

Yeah, hope Kessel breaks it.  When the sole purpose of longevity is longevity, there is no purpose.

At least in some aspect Kessel is still producing points, even on a sh#tty team.

Agreed. I mean, he's producing like a veteran for whom time is catching up, but he's still producing.   And I also agree with [what I think is] your implication that he'd produce even more on a better team.

One of the 3,782 reasons the Flyers are a sh#tty team is because they have Yandle taking up time on the roster.

I'd love to see him sit after he sets the record, and then watch kessel break it.....

I have an even better idea let's trade Yandle to Arizona and then they both can stare down each other till someone blinks first...and is scratched or one or both retires is fine by me let the Yotes have the records.

The fact that Yandle and Kessel are both going for this record by avoiding contact their entire careers shows how lame the Iron Man record has become. Gary Unger was the original Iron Man that I knew of...he amassed over 1000 PIMs. The guy played through the 70s, Kessel and Yandle would have been beaten for playing their style then.

I have to admit i had not sat and watched Yandle a lot during his career and i always thought he was soft from what i did know about him.

Damn how in the fcuk did that guy play so many games and NO ONE ever held him accountable for his terrible, terrible defense???

Man that guy makes Erik Gustafsson look like a Norris winner after watching him play good gawd.

Pretty sure it's the .57 ppg over his career coupled with playing on teams that got past the first round twice in 16 years.

I would say they should have traded him to Arizona, but he came from Arizona...

Yes it is why i suggested trading him to Arizona so he and Kessel could go head to head every game for the Iron man see which one blinks first and to get rid of him - yeah i know a pipe dream...

I was thinking of another defensively-challenged "offensive defenceman" that got traded to the Coyotes recently...

He didn't fit with the Flyers is exactly what Chuckles said....they want a guy who could quarterback the back end and they thought all Ghost could do is blast it from the point and well he stopped getting shots through and well they decided to go in another direction....their words not mine and i did paraphrase it some but it was his excuse.

Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Keith Yandle, 35, ties NHL record for consecutive games at 964

  •  Flyers defenseman Keith Yandle tied the NHL's "iron man" record against the Dallas Stars on Monday night, appearing in his 964th straight regular-season game.

That equals the record set by former NHL forward Doug Jarvis from 1975 to '87. Yandle, 35, can break the mark by taking a shift in the Flyers' game at the New York Islanders on Tuesday night.

Yandle took his first shift one minute and 15 seconds into the first period of the 3-1 loss. According to the NHL, that's all he needed to do to tie the record. Firmly on the back end of the Flyers' depth chart, the veteran had one shot on net Monday, skating 21 shifts that covered 13:39 of ice time in the loss.

"It wasn't really something I expected. I just kind of never really thought about it," he said after the game. "I saw the guys standing for me, cheering. All the fans. It definitely meant a lot."

Jarvis didn't miss a regular-season game from his NHL debut on Oct. 8, 1975, with the Montreal Canadiens through the end of the streak on Oct. 10, 1987, with the Hartford Whalers.

Yandle's streak didn't begin in his rookie season but rather in his third season in the NHL. Since March 26, 2009, he has appeared in every game, not missing one for injuries, illness, suspensions or scratches.

"It's an incredible accomplishment," Flyers interim coach Mike Yeo said. "No. 1, you have to love the game, you have to battle through sickness, injuries. A level of professionalism to come to the rink every day and be ready to go. And he's a phenomenal teammate and I thought he played a hell of a game tonight."

There were close calls. The streak was threatened when the Florida Panthers considered making him a healthy scratch at the start of last season. Yandle also had several teeth knocked out in a November 2019 game and required extensive dental work but returned that same night wearing a full-face cage and then played the following afternoon.

"It's how hockey players are built. You play through as much pain as you can. There have obviously been some times when I have not felt great, when it was tough sledding. But you try to battle through it and help out your team," Yandle said Sunday.

For his career, Yandle has now played in 1,074 games with the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Panthers and Flyers, who signed him as a free agent last offseason. So far this season, Yandle has 13 assists in 41 games, skating to a minus-22.

Heading into game No. 964, Yandle had taken 25,070 shifts, the fifth most in the NHL during that span. He has been on the ice for 20,863 minutes and 26 seconds, which is the sixth most in the NHL.

While Yandle is poised to set the NHL "iron man" record, there's another player with an active streak right behind him: Arizona Coyotes winger Phil Kessel, 34, has played 940 consecutive games, beginning Nov. 3, 2009.

Keith Yandle sets NHL ironman streak record with 965 games in a row

Despite untold bumps, bruises, injuries, and even the thread of COVID, Keith Yandle set a new NHL ironman streak record on Tuesday. Yandle played in his 965th consecutive game, breaking Doug Jarvis’ record for the most consecutive regular-season games played in NHL history.

Maybe fittingly, Yandle set this new ironman streak record by completing one of the NHL’s most regular challenges: a back-to-back set. Yandle and the Flyers faced the Islanders on Tuesday after losing to the Stars on Monday. (When Yandle tied Jarvis at 964 consecutive games played.)

Keith Yandle sets new NHL ironman record by playing 965 games in a row

You can see video of Yandle being honored for breaking that NHL record in the video above this post’s headline.

Also, Doug Jarvis congratulated Yandle for becoming the new ironman:

A comfy-looking Gary Bettman did, as well.

Overall, it’s a pretty flabbergasting accomplishment, and presents plenty of “What if?” questions. Just think about how close the Florida Panthers were to making Yandle a healthy scratch last season.

Naturally, the Flyers marked the occasion with some special garb:

The NHL leaned into some quality cheese, recreating the Doug Jarvis ironman image with Keith Yandle (see this PHT Time Machine post for more on that).

The NHL also shared a really fun “stats pack” regarding Keith Yandle setting a new ironman streak record. If you like “at this time,” type figures (that often include “[blank] was atop the Billboard Charts,” then you’ll enjoy these nuggets:

* When Yandle’s run began on March 26, 2009: Instagram had not yet officially launched; the first Uber ride had yet to happen; Netflix was not available in Canada; Barack Obama was two months into his first term as President of the United States; and it had been less than a year since Iron Man (2008) began the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There are also more nuts-and-bolts stats, and these Yandle facts heading into game 965 really are something:

25,091 – Shifts logged by Yandle during his streak entering game No. 965.

20,877 – Minutes of time on ice accumulated by Yandle during his streak entering game No. 965.

This all leaves us with a thought, and a question. Can Yandle really take a break with fellow ironman Phil Kessel right behind him at 941 games played in a row?

Flyers pick 6th in the draft as it stands. With Yandle continuing his WTFIsHeDoingOnYourRoster streak, the Flyers can only move closer to #2 (we'd never get #1) and whoever this years version of JVR/Nolan Patrick is.

In fairness he has brought that "Miami hockey crowd" atmosphere with him.

Since he is suppose to be a offensive defenseman you think he ever score an actual goal for the Flyers?

Asking for a friend.
