Biggest winners/losers from the trade deadline

A few days late but here it is....

WINNER Avalanche. Yes they gave up Barron a damn good prospect but dealt from depth. Added Lehkonen to make a deadly top nine, Manson for grit and making the leagues deepest defenseeven better and veteran Cogliano for the shut down line. Best team in the West got way better.

WINNER Tampa and Florida. Tampa continues to show why they are the class of the league, up against the cap they added Nick Paul and Brandon Hagel to make the bottom six a strength. Just the usual for Tampa. Florida added Giroux and wont rely on him to carry the club but in the middle six at 16 minutes a night he should be a beast. Chiarot balances out a solid defense. If Ekblad is healthy they could and should win their first playoff series in 26 years.

WINNER BRuins. Added Lindholm then signed him for a very affordable six year deal. Also added nasty Josh Brown to the back end and signed Debrusk to a three year deal in a nice housekeeping move.

LOSERS Flames. Added Brad Richardson and Ryan Carpenter as depth 4th liners and Jarnkrok who is okay but none will move the needle.

LOSER OILers. Seriously, I know the cap is a huge problem but lack of creativity means the arson squad in net stays the same while Brassard is coming in for some reason and they serously waaayyyyyyyyyyyyyy overpaid for Kulak who is just a body in the back end- nothing more. Ugh.

LOSER KNIGHTS. Granted their big move was getting Eichel but they are fading badly and they whiffed on the rumored Varlamov deal, then screwed up trading Dadonov and who knows how that will end. Very bad deadline for them.

OTHER WINNER, CANADIENS TOOK advantage of a limited amount of sellers and got teams to overpay for Chiarot, Lehkonen and especially Kulak adding picks for the rebuild as well as the prize in Barron.

OTHER LOSER COYOTES UFA Kessel is still a Desert dog as they couldnt net anything for him

OTHER WINNER SENATORS They took a different path, instead of simply being a seller they added Sanford and Hamonic and hope to sign them for the fourth line and bottom pair for next year, they have a head start in that regard. Trading Brown they added Senyshyn who got lost in the Bruins system and may be a player, signed Forsberg to a three year deal and for Paul added Matthieu Joseph who has shown flashes. In short instead of just dumping I admire that they added pieces for today and for next year.

OTHER WINNER RANGERS Added Copp, Vatrano and Motte to fix the bottom six which has been their weakness all year. Added Braun as a 6/7 for the playoffs and resisted the urge to deal UFA goalie Georgiyev  instead treating the talented backup as a rental keeping him for the playoff run as insurance. Great deadline day.

I JUST DONT KNOW WHERE TO RANK THE KRAKEN DEADLINE DAY A team in need of talent traded talented blueliner Lauzon for a second, robbed the Jets trading Appleton back to them for a second. Donated Johansson back to Washington,  dealt Gio to Toronto.  In Short they loaded up on picks trading some of the little talent they have on the roster for a handful of decent picks. It looks like Francis is telling his fanbase that they are going to take their time and build slowly from within taking the opposite way of the talented Knights. Settle in, it is a long process.

LASTLY LOSER THE MAPLE LEAFS  Added Carter Hutton to the net. Heh. Gave up way to much for a 38 year old Giordano who has clearly lost more than a step, the hope ispairing him with Brodie will help him find the fountain of youth somehow. He has 6 goals and is minus 21. Yikes. In Short, at most they made a modest improvement while all three Monster teams in the Division, the Bruins, Bolts and Cats took strides. I honestly dont see a path out of the first round for Toronto.

Adding some stuff here:

Wild: Winner
Deslauriers is a good acquisition at a good price who adds more toughness and grit. Bonus: he can score too. Fleury is also a great addition to the squad and they saved $2M by managing to send Rask in Seattle.

Stars: Losers
So they wanna solve their scoring woes by adding Namestnikov after having claimed Studenic off waivers... Ok... I understand the Wedgewood thing as Holtby is still injured. The biggest fail is keeping Klingberg because whatever happens until the end of this season, the Stars will lose him for nothing and there nowhere close of being a team close for a deep run given their miserable depth.

[Kraken]Donated Johansson back to Washington,

I hope this is a luckier move for Marcus than when he left the Caps for the Devils.  (Played his first 7 seasons there, on Ovie’s line near the end, only to leave just before their Cup Miracle.)

And now he’s back on Ovie’s line again.

Rather inauspicious play from Marcus tonight as they get stuff-kicked (at home of course, Caps bad with the home ice disadvantage) by Carolina.

As soon as Washington cuts the lead to 2-1 then go on the power play, Marcus plays weak defense against a charging Sebastian Aho who scores the gut-wrenching shortie; the key goal that set the tone for the remainder of the 6-1 rout.  Egads.
