Mike Gartner, Peter Bondra, Alex Ovechkin - What's with the Washington Capitals and these three players? They are the top 3 goal-scorers of all-time for the Washington Capitals, and they each just happened to accumulate more goals than assists with the Washington Capitals, as well as with their entire careers. Each one from a different era. By the way, Alex Ovechkin surpassed Mike Gartner in assists this season (Gartner 627), (Ovechkin 630).

Mike Gartner and Rod Langway were surely the 80’s heart and soul of the Caps.  I remember falling off my bar stool in ‘89 upon hearing of swapping Gartner for the North Stars’ Dino Ciccarelli.  Yeah, the dude could skate fast; in interviews Gartner talked about how his parents paid for speed-skating lessons during his youth.

Gartner was in one of the more bizarre TV moments I’ve witnessed.  The June 2018 Stanley Cup celebration in downtown D.C. was broadcast live by NBC Sports Washington.  (I wasn’t there, I was in the Midwest most of the time even back then.) All of a sudden one of their field reporters down in the crowd and parade started interviewing Mike Gartner…

…Gartner was of course just in normal street clothes, and apparently didn’t have any hangers-on around him.  He explained that he just had to come down and see the victory parade (nearly 30 years after his Caps days and about 20 years since retiring).  The reporter and studio guy actually said something about his Caps career since a lot of viewers probably had little clue. From what I remember, a good chunk of the celebrating fans were young…

…and so one of the greatest in Caps history buzzes about and around that 2018 parade without garnering too much notice.

“And now you know, the rest of the story.  Paul Harvey….good DAY!”

Way earlier this thread pointed out the oddity of all three having more goals than assists.

All three were tremendously hard shooters.  (Add in Al Iafrate and there’s your fourth for bridge.)  Bondra had his own wicked one-timer slap shot.  (He was John The Baptist to Ovie’s…well, you get the picture, amen.)

Shooters like this aren’t generally prolific assist men.
