SaucyJack
Not to take anything away from Ovie’s Trick in a 9-2 slaughter on the last day of 2022…but based on what I saw in the extended highlights…Montreal looked just gawd-awful. Rebounds Galore for the home side. They deserved being trounced. Now if instead you bought a ticket for the Ottawa game, you saw the proverbial Capitals Collapse. A 3-1 lead late in the 2nd turns into an OT Brownie-Point-Loss when they turn Keystone Kops, tripping over themselves so that the Sens get an easy breakaway to end it. SaucyJack
After tonight’s home OT loss to Les Sabres du Buffaleaux… the Caps are now 3-6 in games tied after reh-goo-lag-shi-OOHHHN. In a tight race for the final spot, with everyone holding games in hand over Washington, those lost points can hurt, even with the cockamamie NHL Brownie Point System* in place. Three extra standings points, were they instead 6-3 in such games, would help. *formerly the pre-2004 BUsh League ihL Standings Point-HeIghTening System

SaucyJack
Ovie nabs one in Garbage Time after the Caps establish a sound lead with a well-landed quadruple toe loop in the 2nd period. (Good coaches’ challenge proving a Blue Jacket offside prevented a close 4-3 score in the 3rd.) This 6-2 win is what ya need to do against a team even worse than Montreal, but it doesn’t prove much, either. Caps follow the Kings as being second team to reach the 41-game midway mark. Of their 26 division games, they’ve only played 8. (Only 7 before tonight.) They’ve yet to play any of their four against the Islanders. NHL HHOF
Alex Ovechkin needs 73 more goals to reach goal number 895, surpassing Wayne Gretzky. He can get in done by the end of the 2024-2025 NHL season. 73 goals divided by 2 seasons = 36 goals for the 2023-2024 season, and 37 goals for the 2024-2025 season. The last time Alex Ovechkin scored under 36 goals in a full 82-game season was in 2016-2017 (33 goals).

SaucyJack
Too bad his 1st of the year was essentially a Garbage Time Goal. (Caps bad enough that late 2nd period can mean Game Over Already.) As the lead off tilt in NHL 2023 Frozen Frenzy night, with a half-hour start with no other games yet started, Washington fails to Seize The Day during this opportunity of undivided viewer attention. Esp on the early PP where #8 nullifies a tally per goalie interference. Would have been nice to succeed early on the unique night. But no. They quite stanky. At least Ovie’s meaningless tally got Washington’s first PP tally of 2023. St Louis also got one in their loss in Winnipeg, so now all 32 teams have scored with the man advantage. FWIW. P.S. Ovie’s early 2nd frame penalty shot failure didn’t help either. He’s not been very good on breakaways for quite some time.
