RANKING THE 50 NHL 500+ GOAL-SCORERS BASED ON THEIR SKILLS AND TALENT - An Idea For A Future Collector's Edition of The Hockey News Magazine

The Hockey News Magazine really needs to do a special collector's edition dedicated to the National Hockey League's 500+ goals club members, once its membership reaches an even 50. Also, Alex Ovechkin will have to surpass Wayne Gretzky in goals before this issue can be published. The hockey experts at the Hockey News Magazine will rank the players based on their skills and talent, and not the number of goals they scored, and let's see how much different the list will look. How would you rank them? Who do you think is the worst member of the NHL 500+ goals club? The back pages of this Hockey News Magazine Collector's Edition should also include a small tribute and ranking of the 500+ goal-scorers from the AHL, BHL, CHL, and IHL. There are only 12 players combined.

Steven Stamkos just became the 47th member on the NHL 500+ goals club. Evgeni Malkin and Patrick Kane will become the 48th and 49th members of the NHL 500+ goals club. After that, it is unknown who will become the 50th member of the NHL 500+ goals club. We will be waiting another 5 to 6 seasons to find out, if Eric Staal does not grab that # 50 spot. Eric Staal should be signed and get to play for two or three more seasons after this one, to make up for what he lost. This is Eric Staal's 18th NHL season. It would have been his 20th if it had not been for the 2004-2005 NHL Lockout, and him not being signed by any NHL team for the 2021-2022 season. He also played in three shortened seasons - the 2012-2013 lockout, and 2-COVID seasons - 2019-2020 and 2020-2021. Eric Staal would have had 500 NHL goals by now.

The hockey world needs a Hockey New Magazine Collector's Edition dedicated to the NHL 500+ goals club. Plus a special tribute to the 500 clubs of the AHL, BHL, CHL, and IHL. No one else is allowed to enter!

I have already tweeted and emailed this topic to the editors of the Hockey News Magazine.

When I was a kid, I was lucky enough to witness a classic era, just as expansion had occurred, with such legends as Hull, Esposito, and Beliveau still playing well.  Gordie Howe didn’t register as much with me by then, so I don’t know if he should be top five.

1 - Gretzky

2- Lemieux

3 - Esposito

4 - Bossy

5 - Trottier or Messier

Honorable Mention: Howe, Beliveau, Hull (Bobby)

Ovechkin considerably down the list per sketchy +/- and playoff performance overall.  (Despite most acrobatic goal in history and likelihood to break Gretzky record.)

I don't think I do.   Outside chance of John Tavares, but I'd bet against.

Joe Pavelski just finished his 17th NHL season. He scored 28 goals! He currently stands at 449 goals. 3 more seasons for 20. I'm starting to think he will actually be the 50th member of the NHL 500+ goals club. No signs of him retiring. No word yet on what will happen to Eric Staal after this season. Will Florida re-sign him? Will he retire?

Joe Pavelski just finished his 17th NHL season. He scored 28 goals! He currently stands at 449 goals. 3 more seasons for 20. I'm starting to think he will actually be the 50th member of the NHL 500+ goals club. No signs of him retiring. No word yet on what will happen to Eric Staal after this season. Will Florida re-sign him? Will he retire?

If Little Joe does hit 500, then maybe we have to talk, but I don't like the longevity award for the HoF.   I would take him on my team in a heartbeat and always would have, but he was never the best in any given year.  He's been an all-star 5 of 17 years, but I don't think I remember him winning any indivdual awards -- I know he hasn't won a Cup, but I don't like that as a determining factor.

500 is 500, though.   I know the longevity thing I said, but at his current 449, that's averaging 26 goals/yr. over 17 years.   That's not something to sneeze at.    I still don't think I vote him in if I had a vote.   They weren't dumb enough to give me a vote, though.
