well there you have it. the pendulum has swung back. And all those who wanted Briere get their wish. I am happy about this decision of course, Fletcher is the JVR of GM's, with less hockey talent. A cancer has been cut out. I still don't think Briere will be a good choice and I don't expect him to accomplish much. I will be happy to be proven wrong

Having said that, why now?

 

I mean, I'm glad he can no longer harm my  favorite hockey team. 

But there was a 10 game losing streak this season. There was the Nic Delauries centered aggressive retool.

I am curious as to why March 10 in the year of our lord 2023?

 

Truly this organization can't seem to do anything right, including being bad.

 

anyways, yay **** that guy. 

Let's see what ol' Lil Paul McCartney can do with little star power, no cap space and undesirable players.

 

Also a thing I hate about the business of sports, I just cheered for a guy to lose his job. Whether or not he deserved it, I can't help but feel a little icky about it.

The timing seems strange.  But...

1) I thought Fletcher's comment last week to the effect that he isn't worried about his job and that it was Dave Scott's decision to stay on board was strange.  It was almost as if he was either daring Scott to fire him or making an implicit request for a a vote of confidence.  

2) Splitting the two positions (GM and Hockey Operations VP) adds some checks and balances.

3)  I suspect one of the reasons this is done now is to change the draft.  Flahr is as good as toast.  

4)  Torts is a kind of Assistant GM in addition to coach.  I suspect he will have significant input on player acquisition.

5) I send prayers and condolences to Danny and his team.  They have their work cut for them.

6)  I guess the "aggressive retool" is now officially dead.  Scott says this will be a long slog.

 

Yeah, glad it's done, but it is only the beginning of a rebuild.  And I hope that certain former Flyers keep their noses out of the process.

I don't think this is necessarily strange timing.  I think it's a direct result of the trade deadline debacle. 

Somewhere in the dark catacombs of the internal workings of Comcast Spectacor they huddled--probably yesterday was the first time calendars were open--and came to consensus.  They needed to read Briere in and get an acceptance of the temp job, prepare their press release(s) and lower the boom this morning when he arrived to work.

 

If the question is "why not well before the deadline--in response to the idiocy that was the offseason?"  I got nothing.

Outside of one lonely member that I can think of ...is there anyone on here that thinks that this is the wrong move???  I suspect many of us are saying about freaking time .....

If there's a poll, it's about Flahr.  Is he gone in days or weeks.  I even wonder about the medical people, training staff, etc.  On the operations side, Fletcher brought in newbies for sales and whatever.  He even brought in a quant/analytics type.  There might be a lot resume brush ups in Flyerland in coming days.

It’s because my son and I were at the game last night and led a fire Fletcher chant in an opposition’s barn!!

I would have to say the 'why now' is to give the new brain trust five weeks to evaluate the team on the ice and the coaching staff before the draft and this Summer free agent frenzy. Honestly I like the timing albeit about two years too late

Of course it's 4+ years too late. He never should've been hired in the first place. But god knows this is the best news out of the Flyers in a long time...

Glad for the Flyer fanbase. Really. Nothing worse than having a guy making decisions that you, as Average Joe Fan completely understand are inane, yet have to stomach them because the guy in charge is "a professional".

I also am not a fan of a guy losing his job, BUT, as has been proven in the past, people who either play pro sports or manage pro sports live in a different world than those of us who work in an office, a warehouse, drive a vehicle, or otherwise HAVE to have our jobs to pay our bills.
While no doubt Fletcher will have to find other ways to provide for his family now, somehow I get the feeling he isn't as financially wounded by this firing as, say, John Doe getting fired from his trucking gig, or Sarah Smiles being fired from her call center gig....

But anyways....yea, 'Ding Dong the Fletcher's Dead' sing the Munchkins, but are the Dorothy Flyer Fans REALLY out of Oz just yet?
Hmmm. As many have repeatedly pointed out, Philly hockey problems have their roots at the very top in their thinking the team "is still just a player or two away from being a player or two away", then hiring a guy who will make decisions (like Chuckles there cleaning out his office) according to that.

So, while I am glad for a fanbase who has had to see crap decision after crap decision made (as a Lightning fan going all the way back to the mid 90's, I can certainly feel their pain as the Bolts were once a joke franchise run by clown owners and jester GM's), I still wonder if removing Fletcher is just a mere portion of the cure.
I mean, after a colonoscopy, the doctors have to go back in and remove the leftovers after seeing how the patient is responding, don't they?

Or is it more accurate to say, that firing Fletcher is like giving the patient an enema, but the real cause of the indigestion has yet to be taken care of?

Enter Dan Briere.
It will be interesting to see how much freedom or restrictions the people above the GM's office put on him.

Congrats Flyer fans. A big problem has finally been weeded out.
Let's just hope the think tank doesn't believe they are NOW just a season away from a Cup contender ...
