Hollywood Posted November 9 Author Posted November 9 November 8, 2024: A BISON-FREE FRIDAY With the Bisons on a bye week, it was a bit of a disappointing evening. There was just one good game, and that was one which surprised me. Whyte (04:31 3rd) Goal: Calg: Tetachuk (22 shots, 21 saves), Reg: Evanoff (31 shots, 29 saves) The Banjo-Cats rebounded from last week’s disastrous road-trip with a solid effort against Bedrock U. After two periods it was a 0-0 game, with shots even at 14-14. Regina scored early in the 3rd, then had a powerplay where they could have taken charge. However, Bedrock U’s Jadon Joseph stepped out of the box and scored on the ensuing breakaway. The Dinos got a bit of luck, after sustained pressure, and scored with a minute left, followed shortly by an empty-netter. Tough luck, Kittens. Final note: The Bedrock roster was two men short. They had to play one man down in this one, and the Banjo-Mutts disposed of them rather handily. Each side had two roughing calls, and Spartan Matteo Lamoureux had a 5-&-a-game in the mid-2nd period. However, it was just 1-0. In the 2nd period, UBC made it 4-0 and were cruising. In a season of injuries across the CW, MRU played one man short. If UBC wants a top two finish in the West division (and home ice in the quarter-finals) they need a split here, at minimum. For Bedrock U, will they finally be able to ice a full squad? Clay Hanus scored with just 11 seconds left in the period to make it 3-0, on a shot Braden Holt would like back. The 2nd period was a good one for the Bisons. Captain Hooker converted a powerplay (with his 5th of the season) to cut the lead to 3-1. After a close call at the Bluegar goal, Josh Tarzwell converted a counter-attack to make it 4-1, and my hopes were basically dashed. However, Grady Lane scored his first as a Bison on a goal-mouth scramble to make it 4-2 heading home. Within four minutes of the 3rd period, Hayden Ostir converted a high slot shot to make it 4-3. Try as they might, the Bisons were unable to draw even. They ended the game on the PP. There were very few penalties in this one. The Bisons were 1-for-4 on the PP, and the Bluegars were 0-for-2. Hollywood Posted November 17 Author Posted November 17 November 16, 2024: BAD 3RD PERIOD DOOMS THE BISONS MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 4 MANITOBA BISONS 1 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : Game Centre ➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW ➤ MRU: Team Website ➤ UofM: MHKY: Bisons' comeback falls short in 4-3 loss to Mount Royal (Friday late) Quick Summary MRU: D. Milliken (10:43 1st) , J. Lies (02:18 3rd) , R. Aquilon (14:18 3rd) , S. Moe (17:15 3rd) Man: J. Hooker (09:44 2nd) Goal: MRU: Sims (14 shots, 13 saves), Man: Thornton (54 shots, 50 saves) First, the line-ups were the same as for Friday night, except that both sides started their Friday back-up goaltender. The Bisons also switched Caden Zaplitny from wing to centering Michael King’s line, with King going the other way. The game started like Friday’s games, with the Bluegars carrying the play but the Bisons hanging in there. Mid-way through the 2nd period, Captain Hooker scored on the PP (his 6th), to tie the game. A few shifts later it appeared that the Bisons were getting the lead. Michael King put one through Riley Sims’ 5-hole, but Bluegar defender Leith Olafson reached across to deflect the puck away before it could cross the line. That was your TSN Turning Point. The Bisons were dreadful in the 3rd period, being outshot 22-3 and outscored 3-0. MRU’s go-ahead goal was a PP on a chintzy call, but that happens. (Each teams 1-for-3 on the PP, BTW.) This puts the Bisons half-way through their toughest stretch of the season, of 8 consecutive games against Tier 1 opposition. They have just 1 point in the first four games. They need more points from the next four games. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD CALGARY DINOSAURS 0 U.B.C. They need to get something out of these series. The Dinos have had problems icing a full roster. It looks like they have now healed. Will former Dino Riley Stotts be able to burn his former team? In a scheduling note, the Bisons have added a holiday away game, at the Minnesota State Mavericks on December 30th. In the 1st period, the Bedrock Boys started strong for about 12 minutes, then it went back-and-forth until Caden Zaplitny scored his 2nd of the season to give the Bisons the lead. This even though period shots wound up 14-3 in favour of the Dinos. Oh, but that 2nd period. It was a combination of bad luck and bad management for the Bisons. They outshot the Dinos 16-7 and carried the play roughly in accordance with that stat. This allowed them to generate powerplay time. However, on those powerplays the Dinos outscored the Bisons 2-0. Those two goals bracketed another Dino goal, all of which came from ridiculous give-aways by the Bisons. On the game tying goal, Braden Holt left his crease in pursuit of a Dino forward and was badly burned as the net was left empty. This period left the Bisons a page right out of history. Sadly, the Bisons seemed to surrender in the 3rd period. Shots were 16-3 for the Dinos. Were they saving themselves for Saturday’s rematch? One can dream, I guess. Their only series against Holy Trinity will be at home. UBC had a sparse pre-season, with two wins against each of Simple Simon Fraser’s Globetrotters and Holy Trinity. They sputtered out of the gate, not surpassing the .500 mark until November 8th. They are coming off sweeps of MRU (5-2 and 5-2) and Calgary (5-1 and 3-0), followed by a bye week. It could be said that they have been playing better than anybody over their last four games. Meanwhile, the Bisons are ending their most difficult stretch of the season, having played Saskatchewan, Mount Royal, and Calgary in the last three weekends. They are 0-5-1 in that stretch. The linked preview story offers this assessment by T-ird coach Sven Butenschon: "They've added a strong recruiting class, strong WHL players," said Butenschon of the Bisons. "They added a veteran in Riley Stotts who transferred from Calgary who's a prolific All-Star in our league. Great goaltender in (Braden) Holt who had a great WHL career. It looks like they're still trying to find their rhythm and maybe they're underachieving a little bit this year but hopefully it doesn't happen against us when they figure it out." For players to watch, UBC has two Top 20 scorers in Sasha Mutala (14 GP, 4 G, 12 A, 16 P) and Sam Huo (13 GP, 6 G, 7 A, 13 P). The Bisons’ top two centres are hovering at or near the PPG level, with Jonny Hooker (12 GP, 6 G, 6 A, 12 P) and Riley Stotts (12 GP, 3 G, 8 A, 11 P). The issue for the Bisons here is whether their overwhelmed defence can find sufficient form to hold off the UBC forwards. The Family Guys have more-or-less established themselves as a middle-of-the-road USports program. MacEwan are 5-0-1 against Regina and Holy Trinity so far, which gives their overall standing a big boost. Otherwise, they have a 5-1 win over UBC and a shootout win over Manitoba. Any points they can get here would be a bonus. It is a home-and-home schedule. Also, it is the only series of the season between these teams. After struggling in the pre-season, the Evil Monkeys have regained their usual form and can score by the bushel. They have 69 goals to lead the CW, followed by MRU, UBC, and Sask all tied for 2nd with 55. The T-irds scored on their first two shots (which took four minutes) and by the end of the 1st period had five goals on 16 shots. That spelled the end of the night for starting goalie, Braden Holt. Kolby Thornton only gave up one goal per period thereafter, the last one with just one second left. However, when down 5-0 it is hard to see the result being in doubt. The other three Friday night CW games were all 3-0 after the 1st period. (Good thing last-placed Regina had the bye!) Holy Trinity yanked goaltender Leon Summer 11 minutes into the 3rd period after he gave up his 6th goal of the game. Rookie Cole Savage then came on to play his first 8 minutes of CW hockey. The Spartans, rather than Bedrock U, were the ones to play a man short in this one. However, this time they fought back gamely and could have stolen a point with any breaks. Braden Holt started in goal, again. On Friday he was pulled in the 1st intermission down 5-0. In this game, he was pulled mid-2nd period down 5-1. Back-to-back powerplay goals mid-2nd period got the Bisons back in the game, at 5-3. The period ended 6-4 for the T-irds, that’s four goals each in a wild period. Andre Sutter scored early in the 3rd period (his 2nd of the night and season) and suddenly it was a 6-5 game. However, the period was fairly uneventful in comparison to the 2nd. UBC had an insurance goal but there were no penalties, nor any rambunctious behaviour. Of note, Dexter Whittle returned to the Bison blueline. He was injured in pre-season against the Manitoba Moose. They could still use a 6'4" 225 lbs. blueliner going forward. The Herd have now become the last team in the CW to hit the mid-way mark. They have just three series against Tier 1 teams (home and away against Sask and at home against Alberta) and four series against Tier 2 teams (home and away against Regina, and at home against MacEwan and Trinity). This game overlapped the Bison game so I missed it. Here the interesting observations from the summary: 1. MacEwan played one man short. 2. Roddy Ross started both games in the Mutts’ goal this weekend, ending their rotation system for the first time this season. 3. The shots were just 30-25 in favour of the Mutts. 4. The Evil Monkeys were led by their powerplay. They were outshot 34-26 on the evening, but when you go 3-for-7 on the PP, with a short-handed goal for good measure, you usually win. It was kind of a streaky game. The Monkeys led 3-0, the Bluegars made it 3-2, then a quick pair in the 3rd made it 5-2 final.
