TropicalFruitGirl26 Posted January 8 Author Posted January 8 Watching some late evening hockey (well, late for me in the Central time zone)... the Vegas Knights at the SJ Sharks. San Jose likely ends up near the bottom of the league once again, but you know what? They are pretty entertaining to watch. Mistakes they make, poor coverage....those are things young teams do in the NHL, but they are talented, and can learn from all that. Alexander Georgiev is no answer for them in goal (he's in tonight), but he is playing reasonably well this game after starting it off looking like he was gonna get blown out. Young Yaroslav Askarov looks to be the main in net for the Sharks. He certainly looked outstanding against the Lightning when they visited there a couple games back. The Knights, of course, are the much deeper team here, and they do lead 2-1 as of this posting with 7 minutes left in the 2nd frame. Still though, those Sharks aren't going away, and if Georgiev holds for the remainder of the game, SJ has a shot to come back and tie, maybe even win this. Quote
TropicalFruitGirl26 Posted January 9 Author Posted January 9 Vancouver Canucks at Washington Capitals. A bit of early rough stuff in this game....Canucks end up with a 4 minute PP much to the chagrin of the Washington bench. That, however, didn't dampen the will and drive of the Capitals PK units. They pretty much made a mockery of the Vancouver PP and it wasn't until there was less than a minute left where the Canucks even sniffed decent zone time. Caps kill off the double minor, limiting the Canucks to just a single SOG during the whole four minutes they had the extra man. Wow, Vancouver. WTG, eh? Quote
TropicalFruitGirl26 Posted January 9 Author Posted January 9 Big hits...slashing.....lots of barking going on... Yea...methinks this game will get nasty in short order. Tom Wilson has been activated by the Washington bench, so he is on alert.... guys like Tyler Myers and JT Miller have hair on their teeth on the Vancouver side looking to smash red jerseys whenever they get the chance. Quote
TropicalFruitGirl26 Posted January 9 Author Posted January 9 Pierre-Luc Dubois has been in the middle of skirmishes and mini scrums all game....and now he gets the opening goal for the Capitals. Ouch...that's gotta rub salt in the wound for the Vancouver Canucks, who, BTW, have JT Miller a bit shaken up on their bench as the period ended. Courtesy of Martin Fehervary. The underrated Fehervary...in terms of nasty hitter. I think I'd put him up there with the likes of Jacob Trouba, Jake Middleton, Will Borgen, heck, maybe even Radko Gudas as players who will gladly knock your block off with a vicious check if you aren't paying attention. Maybe JT Miller wasn't paying attention.... Quote
Math Posted January 9 Posted January 9 I LOVE JT Miller, and I'd love to see him in victory green, but his current contract is awful... So this will remain a fantasy I guess. Quote
SaucyJack Posted January 9 Posted January 9 It’s 2 AM EST and the game highlights for VAN@WSH are still not yet available on the NHL apps (smart TV or Mobile). First time I’ve encountered such a delay this season. Well sometimes the highlights are not well edited (e.g. 75% being for the first period) so maybe they have decided to take more time in creating the 5 and 10 minute highlights. You can win the Predidents Trophy easily by going to OT every game and winning half of them ffs… Quote
NHL HHOF Posted January 9 Posted January 9 The Washington Capitals will win the Stanley Cup this season. Quote

I am not sold on the Caps being a Cup contender, despite their good season. This will sound like I am diminishing their accomplishments, but it almost feels like they are doing this well because the teams in their division aren't exactly lighting things up. Carolina will be in the mix, the Devils put themselves in there, sure....but everyone else? All seemed to have regressed in the Metro (the Blue Jackets playing better than expected for maybe the same reasons as the Caps...although NOT as good as Washington?)....and that includes the giant elephant in the Metro room that has taken a giant crap.... the NY Rangers. My short list for Stanley Cup contenders in the East are the Hurricanes (I gotta believe they are doing what the Panthers did and doing a slow simmer to Cup status), and believe it or not, I think the Toronto Maple Laffs have a real chance, finally, this year. Yes, I take lots of shots at Toronto, but their overall team game has improved across the board while teams like the Panthers, Lightning, and Boston look to have big holes still or took some small steps backwards. And others in the Atlantic like Ottawa, Detroit, Montreal, and Buffalos simply aren't up the level of play of the Maples. Out West, the list is a bit longer.... I do think Vegas has a shot at another Cup, and Edmonton, like the Hurricanes and Panthers before them, are in that build up, should be about to boil over, and finally pull a Cup out of their oiled arses.... Winnipeg looks damned good too. Anytime Connor Hellebuyck is having a Vezina type year while this teammates are knocking it out in front of him, you gotta have them as Cup hopefuls. I also like Dallas and Los Angeles as Cup dark horses. Not sold that Minnesota are real contenders, and I think Colorado is still Nathan MacKinnon line or nothing. But back to the Caps... Man, if they DO win it, you can color me as surprised as anyone. Playing above their expected output during the season is one thing....continuing it and knocking out actual Cup contenders in the playoffs is something entirely different. SaucyJack Posted January 10 Posted January 10 (edited) Fer crissakes, Rangers get a power play with 9 minutes left in a 2-2 game, and the Devils get three shorthanded chances in 54 seconds! Then the Rangers take a penalty. Edited January 10 by SaucyJack Quote

And doesn’t Capitals History know that! The most likely Caps award this season might be Spencer Carbery for coach of the year. Quote
SaucyJack Posted January 10 Posted January 10 Rangers not to be denied in OT. Glorious breakaway chances for Panarin and Zibenajad thwarted before Sam Carrick scores on the nice 2-on-1. Then the whole roster celebrates as a group like a playoff game. Quote

Likely all they really have to celebrate this season.... the big wins few and far between and playing early golf in the Spring. Quote
