hf101 Posted March 22, 2012 Share Posted March 22, 2012 The Adirondack Phantoms have announced that they have signed 6'3" right wing Derek Mathers (pronounced May-thers) to an Amateur Tryout contract (ATO) according to head coach Joe Paterson. Mathers will wear #29 as he enters his first games of professional hockey this weekend. He was a seventh round draft choice of the Flyers in 2011 and participated with the team in Voorhees, NJ during the preseason before being sent back to Peterborough. Mathers is only 18 years old having just completed his second season of Major Juniors with the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League. The Strathroy, Ontario native played in 65 games this year scoring nine goals and eight assists for 17 points while accumulating 177 penalty minutes which was third in the league. As a 17 year old playing In his first year in the OHL in 2010-11 he had 171 penalty minutes which led the league. He is eligible to join the Phantoms for the end of the season as the Peterborough team missed qualifying or the OHL playoffs.Here is a link to a Mathers fight in the Flyers rookie game against the Capitals rookies in September in Philadelphia prior to his rejoining Peterborough.
