Mathers is only 18 years old having just completed his second season of Major Juniors with the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League. The Strathroy, Ontario native played in 65 games this year scoring nine goals and eight assists for 17 points while accumulating 177 penalty minutes which was third in the league. As a 17 year old playing In his first year in the OHL in 2010-11 he had 171 penalty minutes which led the league.

He is eligible to join the Phantoms for the end of the season as the Peterborough team missed qualifying or the OHL playoffs.
