From the NHL rules:

  • 15.2 Calling a Minor Penalty – Goal Scored - If the penalty to be imposed is a minor penalty and a goal is scored on the play by the non-offending side, the minor penalty shall not be imposed but major and match penalties shall be imposed in the normal manner regardless of whether or not a goal is scored.

This happened towards the end of the 1st period vs. the Rangers....Bourdon was called for hooking right before the Rangers scored the third goal.... and yet he still went to the penalty box to give the Rangers a 5 on 3.

The announcers never commented on this.

Anyone here have an explanation?

I was thinking the same thing. But as @Merrick said, I guess it's because Jagr was already in the box. It's confusing that's for sure.
