Irishjim Posted April 6, 2012 Share Posted April 6, 2012 In last night's 2 - 1 win over the Buffalo Sabres, Flyers defenseman Matt Carle caught a ton of heat on Twitter. Just after Buffalo went up on Philly, 1 - 0, late in the 2nd period, all the Carle hate began flooding the social network like the aftermath of a broken dam. Former Broad Street Bully, Ville Leino, was the Sabre to beat Bryzgalov the only time during the tilt. Matt was a hot topic of the discussion, and the subject matter quickly took on a hashtag....#MattCarlesFaultAt first, the hashtag started out small and was used by a small minority of Flyers fans I follow. But then it grew much, much larger. In fact, for almost an entire hour, #MattCarlesFault was trending in the city of Philadelphia and its area. If you're not accustom to the contemporary social network or its lingo, "trending" is a term used to describe what a very large group of Twitter users are discussing at once over the network's timeline. And the hashtag?Users can group posts together by topic or type by use of hashtags – words or phrases prefixed with a "#" sign. Similarly, the "@" sign followed by a username is used for mentioning or replying to other users. ~ WikipediaAnd that's how #MattCarlesFault was born. After awhile, the trend began taking on a life of its own. Users were being less than serious with their postings of the idiom, and it had morphed into sarcastic, hilarious buffoonery.
