couldn't find Bylsma's interview but I saw Orpik's - he was just as complimentary. Specifically asked about Giroux, and was he surprised how dominant he was, Orpik said "He was the best player on the ice, so no we weren't surprised. Maybe 2 years ago we would've been but he's a guy we're well aware of and who we have tremendous respect for."

Nice - and true! Always thought Orpik was a bit of p-rick but he showed plenty of class in the post-game interview.

The Flyers are not the ones needing luck.

I think that would be the guy who just took the widespread "Cup favorite" into its second consecutive first round loss in one of the most embarassing displays of bush league hockey in recent memory.

Lucky if he has another shot at the Flyers.

first round loss in one of the most embarassing displays of bush league hockey in recent memory.

I hope that story isn't soon forgotten. After the POs are over and the Flyers are SC Champions again I hope the hockey world begins (continues) talking about the captain of that classless mess of a team. The "greatest player" and the Art Ross winner, prob this year's Hart winner too before this series, who were 2 of the biggest punks on the ice - along with their understudy James Neal. The disrespect, the cheap shots thrown solely to disable another player, to knock him out of the series... that was some seriously classless hockey.

Hey I know what people will say - the "Broad Street Bullies" are complaining about cheap shots? That's rich!

The fact is it's been 40-some years since the Bullies were in business, and these Flyers are not your father's Flyers. The League has changed, times have changed etc. When a Flyer throws a cheap shot and delivers a concussion on purpose I'll call it "classless" and "punk" behavior too. Till then it's not out of line calling out the Pens "stars" for dirty play.

I don't have a problem with what he said at all. As a Flyers fan you want it to sting, and obviously it did. Better he shows how he really feels , good for the rivalry.

Oh okay good. Finally found it and thought I mighta missed something ... I heard it the same way Jack. The only comment that was a little crappy I guess, when he said "...but I can't wish them luck going forward" - eh, whatever.

That's what I was talking about. I think it's great that he takes it that personally. Just shows how intense the rivalry is now.

haha, yeah, like you said it's good it stings him - him personally.

Imagine how the "greatest player" is feeling now, knowing Giroux out-worked, out-hit, out-hustled, out-scored and out-CLASSED him all series long.

I really don't think that's an overstatement. Nice to have 28 on our side, I'll take his personality and style of play over that girl-lip-having Crosby any day

Who would have thought years ago....when the great "who is better" debate over Crosby and OV was filling up blogs everywhere....that a 22nd overall pick, a kid who was passed over by every OHL team and had to cling to a free agent invite in the neighbouring QHL to sustain his career, would surpass them both.....funny how these things work out huh? At this point, it's fair to say, the Flyers would not trade Giroux for Crosby or OV straight up....a shocking turn of events....but that's how I see it anyways. A bit off topic, but just echoing the words of Bob McKenzie earlier today....give G the C, this is his team, no doubt about it.

can he really still be considered the 'greatest player' in the league now? after this series? i know it's hard to tarnish a pretty established reputation in one playoff series, but it's my understanding that the best players in the world rise in these situations. i suppose the argument could be made that he did score some goals and set the tone for his team early in games there. i dunno... i'm torn about him being the 'best player' in the game right now.

i can honestly say that i believe giroux is a better player.

G's 'the shift' today was much better than richards. richards who? well, it feels that way today anyway. however, i don't wanna make the same mistake giving him the C at this young age. i mean, i think giroux is more mature and able to handle it.. i do. but, i just don't see a real need to do that right now. leave it to the older veterans. it works out pretty well that he's got an A.

The difference is that Richards was GIVEN the "C". Giroux is in the process of earning it. If he keeps this up and takes the Flyers far in the playoffs with this same kind of play, he has earned not only the C but this becomes HIS team.

It's not "Giroux's Team" - it's an actual team. I don't understand the "need" to name a new captain. I don't understand the continued need to anoint someone with a letter "for a purpose" when that theory has blown up in the face time and time again.

He is an important part, and undoubtedly one of the best players in the game, but this team is having success because of the play from top to bottom.

For example - the Pens are "Crosby's Team" now after being "Malkin's Team" for most of the year. They had no idea what team they were when they got here.

When faced with a better team, they got beat. It's why the Stanley Cup Playoffs expose frauds better than most.

Malkin - the "league MVP" - had two goals. Maybe one that "mattered" in the end (today's goal that NBC's color guy thought was "almost like two goals" and Mike Milbury thought apparently changed the entire orbit of planets in a distant galaxy meant nothing 30 seconds later).

Crosby - the "best player in the world" - had eight points (three in the 10-3 blowout, admittedly important points) - and zero in the final game.

This isn't "Giroux's Team" - it's the Philadelphia Flyers. And I think that's just how Giroux likes it.

What i meant by saying "Giroux's team" was him being the face of the team but not the end all be all. The guy who takes charge and carries the team when they need it. I agree to not want everything to revolve around him and that is correct. But to assume the role as the leader of the team by earning it with performances like he had today is very good to have.

I think he's earned everything and proven everything up to the ultiamte goal of the Cup.

What's great is that he has picked up the team on occasion and that others have stepped up when needed.

It was amazing to watch his first shift start with putting Crosby on his posterior and end with potting the game's first goal. I just think that the stability of vets like Briere, Talbot, Timonen, Jagr and even Hartnell, Coburn and Carle can't be understated.

I guess the line I see is that Giroux does what he does now because he wants to - not because he necessarily feels he "has" to. Giroux didn't HAVE to put the team on his shoulders. And I think I would prefer a few more years before he's put into that particular situation.

I think the C is a far too heavy weight for some young players - even once they've won. Where do you go if you're Toews or Crosby? Richards isn't being asked to carry the Kings and now he has something to prove.

I also don't agree with the organization appointing the captain. Players know who's ready to lead them and who isn't.

I totally agree with you rad. Give G the captaincy when he's older, wiser, and a veteran teaching the young guys. Kinda like the way Jagr is doing now, or Pronger, Timonen, Briere, etc.

So far, it seems to have worked for Toews. Not so much for Crosby, Richards, and Ovechkin.

I guess I just don't see what it would add right now. I have no doubt that Giroux is not expecting to be captain right now.
