Irishjim Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Erik Karlsson (D) is a restricted free agent coming off this season. Here's a hypothetical question for all you Armchair GM's out there (and try to remain civil, dammit, like I said, it's just a hypothetical):Would you trade van Riemsdyk to Ottawa for Karlsson's re-signing rights, and let Matt Carle walk?I know it's a longshot, but Alfredsson isn't getting any younger, and some have speculated he may even retire. So the Sens may be in need of a winger. Quote

trevluk Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 (edited) No F-ING way does Ottawa let Karlsson go. Also, I dont think there is any way that Nashville lets both Weber and Suter go, so who ever stays, the other will most likely end up in Detroit. Maybe it's about time we start thinking about developing our own talent? Edited May 9, 2012 by trevluk Quote

flyerrod Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Is crack also your enemy? This will never, ever happen. I do believe he stressed the HYPOTHETICAL in his post....I would move JVR AND a 1st Round Pick for Karlsson. That said, Ottawa still would not pull the trigger on that deal unless they knew they could not reach an agreement with Karlsson. Quote

That said, Ottawa still would not pull the trigger on that deal unless they knew they could not reach an agreement with Karlsson.Well, perhaps I was being UN funny. Still, RFA status and the player's unequivocal track record almost guarantee that a deal will be reached. If not, it means Ottawa is not prepared to pay market value for its best player. I think this stretches "hypothetical" even. Quote
idahophilly Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I thought if you get the RFA you have to give up 4 1st round picks? And no way do I give up JVR for a guy that might not sign in Philly... Quote

mojo1917 Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 @idahophillythe way i understand the draft picks is...the number of picks is pro rated to value of the contract signed, so if you tender a big offer sheet to pry a guy away from a team the more picks you give up, if we offer 2 mil to a guy being offered 1.5 by his current team we may only have to give up 1 pick. idahophilly Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 OK, for those interested here is a link explaing the RFA and compensation. Really depends on his salary...http://proicehockey.about.com/m od/nhlfreeagents/a/nhl_free_agents_2.htm Quote
mojo1917 Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 @Irishjimsure i'd do that deal, i doubt that ottawa does that deal without some more assets going to them though. JvR + what would they want/need. how is karlsson as an actual defenseman though ? Quote

idahophilly Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Hes only making 1.3 mil this year. I assume he is due a big raise by the way everyone is reacting to the idea??? Quote
AlaskaFlyerFan Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 (edited) He'll get a raise. But because he's a RFA, Ottawa only needs to qualify him with a 10% raise. I think he'll get more than that.Ottawa would never trade his rights and they would match ANY offer sheet he is signed to. Edited May 9, 2012 by AlaskaFlyerFan Quote

hf101 Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Too Small!I'm with you on him being too small. He was relatively ineffective against the Rangers. He is a great PP specialist, but once teams key on him he is toast. Quote
