Jody Shelley Waiver/Release Countdown

Now that Sestito is re-signed, how long before we finally cut ties with Jody "Good Lockerroom Guy" Shelley? T-minus 85 days and counting to the start of the regular season.

Just rip the bandaid off Homer, it won't hurt as much!

Remember this classic?

if we waive him we have to pay him half his salary still...maybe they can do what they did to Cote and convince him to retire to take his full salary off the books..

I don't think there's a 57th round in the draft

haha, i think you're right.... god, is there no way to lose this guy? I hate to admit it, even thought he lost WAY more than he won... Riley Cote was a better enforcer than Shelley AND he had a hot wife to sell the Carnival each year for a few years there. Okay, I just heard "better enforcer" and decided I need to change my terminology there. I meant what I said but better isn't the word... more effective? He danced every game and would get guys in the box and put up an occasional win. Shelley's PIMS and games played average out to 2 PIM a game when he actually played.... as a player hired to be an enforcer, his PIMs average should be way higher than that, but yet, here they are, barely averaged a minor per game

Maybe Homer can offer him an immediate assistant coach position like they did with Cote, LOL!

This relates to that whole "we" thing thread. "We" don't have to pay him a blessed thing. COMCAST needs to pay him half his salary AND he is off the salary cap.

For the FAN of the team, it means NOTHING but $1.1M in salary cap space to WAIVE SHELLEY NOWTM

Shelley and a 3rd (nahhh make that a 2nd) for future consideration to (insert team that needs to hit the cap floor here) is the only way you will trade him away.

Package him with Lilja and Matt Walker and send them to ANYWHERE with a second round pick. They could help a team reach the cap floor and give them a pick for when they come off the books next year. Colorado, do you hear me? Dallas? I hope Eklund is reading this and thinking by god lets throw it at the wall and see if it sticks.......

I forgot to give it an (E3)........

if Comcast was willing to throw $200 million towards UFAs a few weeks ago, I think they can eat $1.1 million to get Shelley of the roster.

No, if he is waived and goes unclaimed he goes to Adirondack where he gets his full salary - it just doesn't count towards the cap (unless he is on a 35+ contract, which I don't think he is - he only seems that old).

I think you are thinking things a bit unclear. First, if the Flyers waive him and nobody claims him, the Flyers would have to pay his full salary (assuming he is assigned to the Phantoms)- which is $900k. Yet, they would absorb ZERO cap hit.

Now if Shelley was to be waived > unclaimed > plays for phantoms and the Flyers recall him (one can only assume massive injuries) and another team can claim him upon re-entry. At that point, the acquiring team and Flyers would split his salary AND cap hit. If the acquiring team sends said player to the AHL (exposing him again to waivers) and he clears, then the 50-50 salary and cap split hit is off the books.

So, in short, the Flyers could easily waive Shelley without absorbing a cap hit for the big club. The only time the 50-50 split comes into play is re-entry waivers and Shelley is claimed off another team.

Soooooo, no need to worry about this 50/50 split scenario huh?.....LOL!

Exactly. I learned a little tid bit I did not know before in clarrifying my understanding of the rules in my post to OC: Did you know that a team can waive a player (and assumming he is not claimed on the initial waiver), that player can be recalled within 30 days as waiver exampt?

Why in God's name would you want to EXEMPT Shelley from waivers?!@?!?!?!?     (Sarcasm Font)

I actually learned there is a limit to the number of emotions you can use.......who knew?

550,000 is versus a contract slot is pennies.........

Good point. The phantom contracts count towards our 50, correct?

You could do a buyout- which would remove the contract. It would be a $500k cap hit this year and a $300k cap hit next year. I think I would like to know where our contract count currently is before going that route. If there is not a significant contract count issue, just waive him and let him ride the bus or retire.

Van, Aziz would know for sure, but in general my understanding is that the Phantoms count against the contract total. There are also non-Phantom players that count as well, I'm pretty sure I saw some on the contract list last year. I don't know how that is determined, though.

Any contract signed counts against the total sum. That includes AHL players and prospects.
