"We will not play this year"

$&$&@&&&$&&&$). Your not suppose to take the first offer!!!!!!! Wtf people. The nhlpa has the biggest bargaining chip and the league knows it. They have to start on that end.

Regardless to the "Your not suppose to take the first offer!!!!!!!" is that the NHL has gone out of the way to make it an insult. If I am Fehr, I tell the NHL, we will not be playing again until this contract is resolved meaning no extending the current contract another year. If the NHLPA does that, it shows weakness and they may as well go ahead and sign the first offer because the NHL is going to use the willingness to extend as a sign of weakness.

I've done 20 contracts. No strikes. I've been insulted by offers. It's all positioning. Feeling the other out.

I have been a union member for over 20 years now. I have been through several contract negotiations over that time period and I tell you right now what the Owners did was stand up on a platform and start pissing on everyone. What they proposed is ludicrous/ridiculous/laughable (pick your own term here). Negotiations are supposed to be " in Good Faith", the approach the owners have taken is anything but that.

Regardless of anything else, ^^this^^ cannot be disputed. And I agree with what others have said about Fehr... probably not a good guy to mess around with. Let me say that I appreciate the back and forth from those of you who have gone through these processes. At this point, would "cautiously optimistic" be *too* optimistic?

The first offers are never in good faith. My offers were never in good faith at first. Very simple. You want 5 you ask for 10. Hopefully you get close to that number when it's all said and done. Fail to budge is on anything is not negotiating in good faith. Normally that's when a binding arbitrator steps in with the approval of both parties.

The NHL’s first offer in its negotiations with the NHLPA was seen by many as a shot across the union’s bow. And with the league reportedly asking for a considerably larger split in hockey-related revenue from the players, the elimination of signing bonuses, as well as a salary rollback, predictions of a work stoppage are growing in number.

In fact, one source with knowledge of the players’ side of the negotiation is predicting not just a work stoppage, but an entire lost season.

“Last time around, the NHL made its salary cap proposal and barely moved off it,” the source, speaking under the condition of anonymity, told PHT. “This is not an initial proposal. The league is shutting down and it’s ‘come back when you’re ready to accept.’

“This is exactly what happened last time. You heard it here first, we will not play next year.”

Granted, that’s just one opinion.

For most, it remains hard to imagine another lost season after the entire 2004-05 schedule was wiped out due to a lockout. Could the league and union really let it happen again?

It’s also still very early in the negotiations. The current collective bargaining agreement doesn’t expire until Sept. 15, and we’re only in July.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly declined to comment on the above.

I gotta say, If this league (that seems to keep whoring itself out to recruit basketball fans) can't get it together and prevent their second work stoppage in a decade I might have to walk away from it. The NHL offers no reward to its loyal fans. I'm sick of the shootouts, I'm sick of the inconsistencies regarding discipline, I'm sick of the obvious bias towards certain players and organizations, and I'm sick of seriously questioning the integrity of the NHL.

If they let another work stoppage happen I really will have a difficult time being an NHL fan. I love the sport of hockey but I am on thin ice with the NHL. They seem to be a day late and a dollar short compared to the other major sports. They had a lockout before and then had to doctor the sport in order to win back fans. If it happens again what lengths will they go to to win back fans then? Playoff shootouts? Another whiney superstar shoved down our throats designated the savior of hockey? More troubled franchises gifted hockey's sacred trophy? What will it be? It certainly won't be discounted ticket prices or free television viewing for games.

No, I think I'll pass on the next new new NHL. If they want to go through this kind of thing again they can do it with one less fan.

Going to a game is such a wallet rape it's ridiculous. The cheapest seats in the house make you second guess if it's worth taking the family down... that same money could fund a modest vacation, like a day trip to the beach and en evening on the boardwalk.

Fortunately I'm already a cable subscriber so the games aren't an added cost to watch on TV but I know that doesn't apply to everyone.

At the end of the day another work stoppage won't chase me away for good, though it will certainly be frustrating. The sport itself must be naive to it's place in the world. It needs a lot of work if it's going to compete with the other big 3 (4 if you count NASCAR). A work stoppage will not help the sport in general and that hurts all parties.
