Koivu is a goo utility guy. Does a lot of things well, nothing great. I thought he and Heatley would be a nice fit but the jury remains out... Parise is the best talent on that team in my eyes. A complete player like Koivu, but is better at every aspect of the game.

@Polaris922 Yes Polaris, agree...I'd give Praise the edge over Koivu in tenacity, physicality, cycling, penalty killing, scoring and leadership. Zach's just a little guy, but he can knock you out of a game with a nice hit, Koivu just does not have that in his arsenal.

I know what you mean. I didn't misundertand what you meant by Moneyball.

But the point is not "players refusing to sign for less" but players who are going to be making less being put into positions to do more.

something like this:

http://espn.go.com/nhl/team/roster/_/name/phx/phoenix-coyotes

They got to a Conference Final last year.

Until those guys making less and doing more decided it's time they earn more. It'll find another way to break through.

Well, right, it's a process. It's not being tied down to guys that you "have to sign" - it's having a continual run of players that you're always restocking.

When guys get to the point that they decide they earn more, you trade them/their rights and continue to develop.

I'll say it *didn't win* in Oakland and Phoenix *didn't win* the Cup last season.

But one could argue that Phoenix, in terms of winning Cups, has as many as the high-spending, big-bucks FA Flyers...

That's not a longterm solution though. Somebody needs to man up and set the tone. I don't absolve the owners; they are they ones who pay the contracts afterall. But there needs to be something from the players that shows they care about the sport and not just their paycheck.

You could, yeah. But unless it was a league-wide (or at least majority of teams) philosophy, I don't know how much it matters.

@fanaticV3.0 The owners just can't help themselves. It's like taking a wheelbarrel of choclate bars into a weight watchers meeting, turn out the lights and there will be wrappers on the floor and fat people with choclate smudges everywhere....it's inevitable.

LMAO!!!!! Talk about the perfect analogy....

Not bad.

is how I always imagined the players during contract negotiations.
