Now, if you think of how suburbs should've been *really* built (European model), that would be totally different. But I just can't come to term with leaving in a place... which is exactly that - a PLACE... with no identity, no face, no personality, and which looks like hundreds of thousands of similar places all over the country: a highway, a set of strip malls, and a bank. And I can't even begin to describe how maliscious this way of life for children and old folks, when you totally depend on someone to drive you wherever you need to go.

How difficult would that be for developers to at *least* build sidewalks parallel to highways so people could walk? It makes me feel depressed every time I think that I will have to drive my daughter to every place she needs to go: a library, a friend, a gym, etc., until she learns how to drive. And I just can't imagine what this does to kids' minds - to know they cannot go where they want without asking their parents to drive them. No wonder we have such a high rate of maniac depression amongst children; I am sure this way of life messes their psyche and spirit.

I don't expect parks and central squares, but the ugliness of these empty shells is just staggering...

Your points are well taken. For me, I was referring to places like Yardley and Doylestown. Both have a shopping plaza, but no stripmalls. Both have sidewalks and one has the canal and toepath. The suburbia you describe is not suburbia to my perspective (but I know exactly what you are talking about). The suburbia you describe is just an extension of commercialism only and no sense of community / town.

I have lived in some great cities: Portland, Vancouver, Seattle, San Fran. I don't belittle the value of a great city. But I also do not dispel the value of a small town / community.

That being said, I still have a fondness for it, and I still have a lot of friends and family there who I visit pretty frequently.

Me too. And while some may disagree, there is something to be said of being behind in the times / progress.

I couldn't agree more. Sometimes it seems like the further we get, the more we "fall behind." Part of me loves smart phones and the Internet for all of the opportunities they present (like all of us talking on this forum, whereas otherwise we may never get the chance to interact); but at the same time it sets us back in a weird way... if we let it, that is. And a lot of people do. It almost seems like no one wants to talk to an actual human being anymore, in a lot of cases. I apologize if that's not where you were going with that, but it brought those thoughts to mind. Sometimes I really do love the "behind the times" aspect of life. Keep it simple, you know? Not to be overly philosophical, but what is progress anyway? Perhaps I need sleep :-\

@Vanflyer

If I may ask, how old are you? I played a lot at Grundy, FO Circle, Wissahickon, Melody Brooke in the 90's (High School) through about 2010 when my body decided to start to fall apart.

We may have crossed paths. I played for North Penn in the 90's and a lot of beer league from about 2004-2010.

Bert, My body's falling apart too, but if you're interested in getting back on the ice, Grundy's got a C2 league that should be starting up again in Mid-September. It's slower than C, so my back and knees aren't torn up by the end of a game. It's only about 3 seasons old.

@AJgoal

Thanks AJ. What night do they usually play? Grundy is a solid hour away from me now, but it would be nice to go there for the old time memories. Perhaps if they do weekend or late night games.

I am not too far from Oaks Center Ice now, but I haven't really looked into league play in awhile. I would love to get into a league that is flexible, especially since the "new addition" is here and she demands a lot of daddy time.

They will run most of the games on Friday night, with one or two on Sunday, I think. Schedule's been fudged up a bit because they redid the ice in one of the arenas and added two teams. We used to play all games Friday night when there were 6 teams, then one friday and 3 Sunday when there was only one ice surface. Pretty sure they're flipping it to 3 friday/1 sunday when the new season starts.
