radoran
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/brian-burke-fired-toronto-maple-leafs-general-manager-173540981--nhl.htmlThe Toronto Maple Leafs have fired general manager Brian Burke just days before the expected start of training camp for the 2013 season, ending four years that produced plenty of controversy but not a single appearance in the playoffs. Bob McKenzie of TSN was first with the news.Strange time to fire your GM - right before the season and after the FA period and draft, not to mention the immediate need to get a team ready for the regular season.

Phillygrump
Maybe they were afraid he'd give up the moon for Luongo now.
Phillygrump
Even though I could see Homer doing the same thing.....
Podein25
Pierre Labrun on TSN now making the case for how it would have been inappropriate to fire him during the lockout.Yeah, on the eve of the season makes more sense. JackStraw
Leafs forum on hfboards is in meltdown.
flyercanuck
I'd guess MLS&E didn't want him bringing in Luongo just for one last pathetic chance at making the playoffs.
yave1964
Leafs are a mess, I guess the owner said Phaneuf was Phaneuf.

brelic
Funny thing is, I see specualtion (teh Twitter) that he was fired because he DIDN'T want Luongo...I read the same. It really is a strange time to fire your GM. They could have fired him *before* the lockout, too. Not like anything's changed since September. In any case, Burke has more or less isolated himself in this league with his abrasive attitude toward other GMs, and I would guess they're not too keen on trading with him. DaGreatGazoo
and I would guess they're not too keen on trading with him.Maybe Vancouver said, we'll trade you Luongo, but not unless you fire Burke!
Digityman
But why did they keep him until the eve of the season? Because he was involved in the CBA talks? I don't get it.

I don't get it.On the TSN page (and as @Podein25 said), I read that it was because they felt it would have been inappropriate to fire him during the lockout. Either way, very poor timing. radoran
There was plenty of time between the end of last season and the lockout. You'd think they'd be used to being winless in September, October, November and December in Tronno...
JackStraw
According to TSN Burke will stay with the team as a "senior advisor". In charge of eating popcorn no doubt... Edited January 9, 2013 by JackStraw

fishbulb
Bob Mackenzie feels it's b/c the Leafs ownership was transferred to a new group and they were looking for a more PC/Fan friendly face for the franchise.
