IF THERE WAS NO SALARY CAP ?

i've said it before, it's too bad we didn't have a competent GM during the era before the salary cap! Really, we just needed a solid goalie and maybe another solid dman and 2nd line scorer and we would've won a Cup with Lindros/Legion of Doom years :(

I read something the other day that the payroll was $72 Mil in 2004 (I think) before the Salary Cap was instituted. This year's cap is $65 mil.

so if they've been saving at least 7 mil a year in salaries for the past 6+ years, why in the &**$#^@W*# are ticket prices still going up? Parking is up, tickets are up, concessions are up but salaries are way down and have been so for over 6 years now? what have they been doing with that excess 7 mil each season? not giving it back to the fans I know that.

Actually, in all seriousness, the gate receipts (including the club boxes), do not cover the players salary. Last year, the gate receipts were 54M and the player salaries were 68M. There are of course parking and concessions. But just on the tickets alone, it does not cover salary. That why the playoffs are so important to allot of franchises. For example, the prior year when the Flyers went to the SCF, the gate receipts were 66M. That covered the players salary.

But they also have debt (for the new stadium) that they are still paying.
