The Flyers announced they have signed forward Petr Straka to a three-year, entry-level deal.

Straka, 20, has led Baie-Comeau to the third round of the Quebec Major Junior League playoffs with 18 points in 8 playoff games. He racked up 82 points in 55 games in his 20-year-old season in the ‘Q.’ Baie-Comeau will face Blainville-Boisbriand in the semifinals next week, which will prevent Straka from joining the Phantoms this season.

According to his representation, Octagon Hockey, the Flyers beat out a group of 10 suitors to sign Straka to the entry-level contract, which begins next season. Straka’s deal is for the NHL entry-level maximum of $925,000. His base salary is $823,500, but he also has a $92,333 signing bonus coming his way each summer.

Straka (6-foot, 195 pounds) is a former second round pick of Columbus (55th overall) in 2010. After posting 64 points in 62 games as a 16-year-old, when Columbus nabbed him, Straka’s numbers dropped off with 25 and 37 points in his following seasons. He never signed with the Blue Jackets and became a free agent in 2012.

Though they are from the same hometown (Plzen, Czech Republic) and last name, Petr Straka has no relation to former NHL star Martin Straka.

Sounds like he will help out the Phantoms and probably a depth signing, but he might surprise at some point.

Here's a little more info from http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/petr_straka/

History

2008-09: Chosen in the first round, 22nd overall, of the 2009 CHL Import Draft by the Rimouski Oceanic. Played for HC Plzen, scoring 16 goals and 11 assists in 30 games for that club.

2009-10: In his QMJHL rookie season, Straka played in 62 games for the Oceanic. He scored 28 goals and added 36 assists for 64 points. He added 54 minutes in penalties to his offensive statistics. In 12 playoff games, Straka scored 5 goals and chipped in 9 assists for 14 points. Played for Team Orr at the 2010 CHL Top Prospects Game.

2010-11: Straka was bothered by an ankle injury and played just 41 games for Rimouski in his second season in the QMJHL. He scored 10 goals with 15 assists and was an even plus/minus with 33 PMs. Rimouski finished under .500 but made the playoffs after finishing fourth in their division. Straka skated in all five games in the Oceanic's first round series with Gatineau and scored 2 goals with 2 assists.

Talent Analysis

A speedy winger with great hands, Straka has learned plenty playing under Coach Clem Jodoin, especially how to round out his game and play effective hockey at both ends of the ice. Although he sometimes struggles with his consistency, Straka has a nose for the net and will only get better as he continues to develop and get stronger.

Future

Straka was not signed by the Blue Jackets, nor was he chosen at the 2012 NHL Draft. He will likely return to Europe to continue his playing career.

First of all, how does Columbus draft a 16 year old?

He's put up some nice numbers including 58 playoff points in 46 games. He's NOT a center. He's NOT Martins son. He hails from the birthplace of lager beer. All pluses.

He must have been pretty bad last year if Columbus decided not to sign him and nobody else drafted him. As a FA signing it looks like a good move.

This is exactly the type of situation where Comcast should be flexing their corporate muscle. If they want a player and he's UFA, the signing bonus they offer should be way above the other teams bid. I know they tried with McKeyser, but that was a "home" type of signing. Would like to see a lot more of this, it's the one advantage they have.
