Tambellini Fired

According to TSN Tambellini has been fired with Craig MacTavish becoming the new GM. Scott Howson will be hired as president of operations.

Four seasons of not making the playoffs....yeah this is a no-brainer. Although I'm not sure why Howson was chosen as president of operations?

First, hiring Howson as president of operations is a head scratcher. Does someone seriously sit in "the room" and say "Hey Howson's available. We know what a wonderful job he did in Columbus."

I'm not sure what I think about the "no-brainer" thing in regard to Tambellini. I guess I'm fine with his being fired and MacTavish taking over, but it seems like Edmonton kind of has a good ol' boys thing going on up there. It's been four years, but he's had to pretty much build a completely empty team entirely through the draft. He's been able to make a couple trades, but some of those have demanded to be moved out. Not because of the organization, necessarily, but because it is EDMONTON. Same thing with the inability to attract free agents of any value. Small wallet, small town, smaller hope.

I know some of the drafts were pretty much no-brainers, but it seems he's acquired some decent pieces and they're just trying to get them developed.

Eh, could personally care less. Guess we'll see what MacTavish can do. He just better hope Howson doesn't have too much say in personnel moves.

@ruxpin I'm shocked with the Howsen hiring....he's the last human on earth I would want watching over hockey operations! They needed a fresh start up there in Edmonton....instead, they rehash McTavish and hire Howen of all people?!?! WOW.

They really do seem to have the same problem the Flyers do with the "old boys" network. They really need to fire Kevin Lowe (who really is responsible for the mess up there) and get rid of Craig MacTavish and wash the stink out.

I wouldn't hire Howsen either. But for the sake of argument, he is responsible for some good things in Columbus. Yes, the Carter trade with the Flyers was a horrible mistake, but he did move to rectify it. The Ranger trade for Dubinsky et al. helped them, and of course getting Bobrovsky for toothpaste. But, yeah, outside of Mike Milbury I can't think of an option that would be less appealing.
