Mario99
Anthony Mantha 6-3 210 LW in QMJHL grandfather Andre Pronovost who won 4 Cups with Habsscored 50 goals, only knock is his defense and plays soft at timescheck out youtube has a nice goal coming down off wing and backhands a goal nice movehis pluses is Vision and shot, also a good skater
ctid
not good defensively and plays soft....hmmm,Pass.
Mario99
you can coach up a player to play defense and being soft is a function of him being 18 years old and dominating scored 50 goals in QMJHL

And we do need a legit threat on the wing. But honestly, how many players score 50 in the Q and then are really just average or less players in the NHL? Quite a lot. Maybe it's worth the shot if ALL of the defensemen are gone, but we need defense before worrying about forwards.
Jmdodgesrt4
I say we get between 5-8 pick overall. That's fine. Dman will be there we need.
ruxpin
Yeah, I can't imagine us dropping to 11-12 unless we do something really stupid and win-out (and get help).

And the bolded parts make him sound like JVR who we just got rid of. I think we'd likely take Ristolainen if he's still there at that spot, or Pulock. But he is worth considering I guess. I'm just tired of big forwards who play soft. I just want us to draft a D-man.
Mario99
You guys remember Mike Bossy he played soft in QMJHL scored way more goals than Mantha like in the 70's at Laval but hockey was played different back thenthis kid was the only 50 goal scorer in the Q and there were only 3 or 4 guys who scored 50 or more a few had 48 goalshe reminds me of Bossy just a little
Philly29
If we are not going to be able pick in the top 5 this year "damn team can't even lose right love them to death though!" and pick between lets say 7 - 10 would you guys trade the pick and a player for a already established young dman? Jmdodgesrt4
No. I like the young team. Keep it that way.

That's a different story.I agree we need defensive help, depth whatever we need warm bodies on the blue line.

I'd be in favor of, I am not crazy about dealing Schenn or Couterier plus the pick. Truth be told I wonder what it would take to pry Depres from Pgh... I like his game and they have a lot of depth on defense.

ruxpin
Yeah he could be the next Scott Glennie!!!!!!!!!!!Yeah yeah i know he wasn't in the Q!!!!!!!!!!Remember Patrick Thoresen? Twice scored 30 goals in the Q. It's not 50, but it's something. What did he do in the NHL? He scored two goals and lost one nut. That's it. I mean, Mantha might be good. And scoring 50 in the Q is better than not scoring 50 in the Q. But it's not exactly any proof that he's an NHLer.
TimKerrFan12
People insinuate to the fact that the QMJHL is easier to score in, or there is more offense or the defense is worse whatever it is, but are their stats to back that up? There are a lot of players from the Q that scored a lot in the Q and in the NHL. Is the Q still considered an inferior league to the OHL and WHL? flyercanuck
@TimKerrFan12 I don't think it's inferior. I think it's more wide open. But the Q has had some of the best teams in the CHL over the last few years.

There are a lot of players from the Q that scored a lot in the Q and in the NHL. Is the Q still considered an inferior league to the OHL and WHL?That's a question for jammer or flyercanuck (or someone else who knows what they're talking about--unlike me). My initial point wasn't really to attack the QMJHL. I guess my comment was about juniors altogether. If someone is scoring 50 in any junior league, that's terrific. It's obviously doing well against their peers and better than the host of other kids NOT scoring 50. But the 50 goals alone doesn't seem to directly correlate to what kind of NHL player they'll be. I suppose there's no automatic tell-tale or drafting would be a hell of a lot easier.I guess I myself was only really trying to relate it to Mantha. Because--again, these comments would probably be better left to you and others who seem to actually watch juniors--it seems to me that a kid who scores 50 in the QMJHL but doesn't seem to do ANYthing else (defense, pass, etc.) doesn't sound like a can't miss NHLer, let alone a difference maker.Sorry, I didn't mean to come across like I was criticizing the Q. I don't know enough to make that judgement.
ruxpin
I don't know enough to make that judgement.Thankfully, that doesn't stop me on most other topics or you people wouldn't get to read all of my wonderful posts.
mojo1917
@TimKerrFan12My comment about the Q vs the other junior leagues was alluding to the style of play; which in the limited times I've seen it is like an NHRA drag race event compared to the WHL and OHL games I've seen. certainly not being critical, I enjoy the Q games when I get to see them, but with the pace and style of play seems like a guy could pot 50 in the Q because there are more opportunities. And scoring 50 in the Q is better than not scoring 50 in the Q.Only thing i know aboot the Q is that Mario still holds and may forever hold the record for most goals in a season with 133 in 70 games thats all i got...
jammer2
@TimKerrFan12 It's a real generality, but I find the defensive zone coverage tighter in the OHL rather than the Q....but obviously can vary from team to team.
