canoli
According to him that is. I wish the story said why they invited Bryzgalov in the first place...it mentions Varly, why he's unavailable...Bob is an obvious choice, Bryzgalov...must be because he's famous in Russia."Sport-Express.ru (@SlavaMalamud) also reports that Bryzgalov has been guaranteed the Nr. 1 spot, because otherwise he wouldn't come unless the Nr. 1 spot is guaranteed. The also reports that Semyon Varlamov has a sure spot for sochi, that why the coaches didn't invite him."http://russianhockey...-bryzgalov.htmlOn philly.com/flyers Frank Seravalli mentions it at the end of his article today about Giroux."Surprisingly, expected Vezina Trophy finalist Sergei Bobrovsky will be Bryzgalov's backup. Bobrovsky finished second in the league with a .932 save percentage; Bryzgalov finished 48th among 57 goalies with at least 10 games with a .900 save percentage."http://www.philly.co...e_the_heat.html
ruxpin
LOL @ guaranteed the #1 spot. Whatever. Not to channel gummy or anything, but I guarantee he's a big steamy pile of #2.

murraycraven
You guys have this all wrong... this is in no way Bryz's fault. It surely lies on the Coaching and the Russian selection committee.

Despite the ninja, I think you're onto something here.Bryzgalov says "I'm not coming unless I'm #1" and the Committee says "sure, you're #1 - here you go"Sounds eerily familiar to me. Like someone sending a private jet to pick up a guy and then giving him a monster contract with a no movement clause.Craziness.
MaineFlyFan
WOW!.....thats just wierd. How russia doesn't start Bob is beyond me......Crazy world we live in kids.Bob 2nd in the leauge....Bryz....48th. Says it all.
flyercanuck
LMFAO! You'd have to think Giroux, Simmonds, Read ,Schenn and Voracek have to be salivating at the chance to shoot AGAINST the bum of a stiff of a sieve. Here's hoping he's the starter in Sochi too! canoli
It's hard to believe Bryzgalov is so out of touch with his own worth. How a guy with his record can demand the starting job - over somebody who's obviously more capable - it's just kind of sad. I know some people admire that - that phony confidence, bravado - whatever it's called. He certainly knows how to get what he wants so good for him. But he must realize by now that everyone is laughing at him not with him.
flyercanuck
@canoli Confidence isn't exactly what comes to mind when I think of Bryzgalov. There aren't many starting NHL goalies who CAN'T handle pressure like Bryz has shown. Wasn't he THIRD string on his KHL team?
aziz
<br />I know some people admire that - that phony confidence, bravado - whatever it's called. <br />I think people admire confidence, "I can be the starting goalie,"...don't of anyone who admires, "i'm starting goalie or i'm not playing."then again, people were pretty impressed with the "I want to be the highest paid goalie in the league" thing a few years ago, so who knows. flyercanuck
@murraycraven Ya, Bryz probably actually said "I really liking striped wallpaper. Gerbil is funny word. Hurricane Katrina is coaches fault".
canoli
well that's why I called it "phony confidence" but you're right, nobody admires that - but they can be fooled by it, believing it's actual confidence. Yah that whole "I want to be the highest paid..." certainly fooled Ed to some degree.Murray you're right, translation can be tricky sometimes. That's why I found the Russian newspaper's report. If anyone's going to get it right they should. The statement Bryzgalov made isn't exactly hard to translate: he demanded the #1 spot or else he wouldn't join the team.[edit: does Bryzgalov really carry that much prestige... or is it his fame or what? Why in hell would the Russians want him at all?] Edited April 30, 2013 by canoli

The statement Bryzgalov made isn't exactly hard to translate: he demanded the #1 spot or else he wouldn't join the team.Just to be clear: there is no "statement" from Bryz in the report you posted. I'm not doubting the veracity, I'm just saying there's no quote from Bryz to translate.

You have a Vex finalist in Bob yet to take Bryz over him?!? Makes no sense whatsoever...

radoran
As a backup mostly couldn't beat out the other guy the journeyman whos name i can't remember...yet we all know stats can be misleading...He was 6-5 in 12 games and started off badly. His early appearances - and the famous Bryzgalflop - were heavily trumpeted on this board. His later play which dropped his GAA/SV% was, shall we say, not followed with quite the same attention around here?Bryz's stats were comparable to the "other" backup (.914/2.39), but was significantly behind the "starter" (.934/1.76).The "other" backup only started 18 games all season and Bryz left with significant numbers of games to play. That said, the position that he's so middling that he couldn't even break the lineup as a backup at CKSA Moscow seems to conflict with the idea that Bryz is "a star" in Russia which is why he's been "guaranteed" the #1 starter spot for the World Championships.
