Phillygrump Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Would you trade #11 and Matt Read to Calgary for that pick #6 to select Nurse? I'm not sure how the value would work out, I'm hardly an NHL draft expert, but I know that Calgary is pretty high on Matt Read. It sucks to give up Read, but if we are desperate for a you Defenseman prospect would you think it would be worth it? Quote
OccamsRazor Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Would you trade #11 and Matt Read to Calgary for that pick #6 to select Nurse? That is a hard one...i'd rather include Read in a trade for someone who is ready now......and just take the best prospect at #11. 1 Quote
LiAmTrAnSdEmOn Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Not that prospect rankings are true or set in stone or anything, but I think the NHL Network had ranked Nurse and Shinkaruk tied for #10 on their list of prospects. So, if the draft works out in an order that they have, Nurse could actually fall to us. Quote
flyercanuck Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 High price to move from 11 to 6. Too high IMO. 3 Quote
Jmdodgesrt4 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I don't think the flames would even look to move that pick. They need a center bad. This draft has them especially top six pick. I doubt they budge. Quote

Bertmega Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I'd tend to agree with some of the above. The only way I'd feel safe trading up would be to get a crack at the top 3. With that, the only way I see that happening is if Schenn or Simmonds is traded along with the Flyers first round pick. I'd keep what they have and draft the best available at #11 and address the defense organically; i.e., develop what they have and see where the chips fall. Also, I think Nurse is still on the board at #11. Just a hunch. Quote
Jmdodgesrt4 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I don't think that would even do it depending on what center is still on the board for the flames. This draft is looking like maybe five or six nhl stars in the league with maybe even ten on the opening night rosters next year. Moving up in this draft is going to be very costly. I would suggest we try to get a later first round pick. Det would live to have coby. Is that 1st round worthy? Don't know. But I rather so that in this very deep draft then trade assets away to nice up a few spots. Quote

They will pick 6th, and then they also have St Louis' and Pittsburgh's 1st rounders. What would it cost to land the St Louis pick? We might be able to get two defensemen in the 1st round, or grab Fucale in goal with the late one. Quote
Jmdodgesrt4 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Maybe coby and our second gets us lower 20's. or just coby and prospect. But yah I would def try that route. I think Haag or morrisey will be around then as well. Quote
flyercanuck Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 @Jmdodgesrt4 I think you are vastly underestimating Coburns value. Quote
Jmdodgesrt4 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 No I think he is worth a first but I'm not sure on how far up we can move. Quote
JackStraw Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 (edited) Another defenseman to possibly consider if the top four are gone is Mirco Mueller. Seems to have the kind of all around game (and size) that should translate well to the NHL.http://thehockeywrit...ospect-profile/"Those comparisions start with how composed Mueller is on the ice. He doesn’t get rattled, is sure of himself in his own end and is a very fluid and smooth skater. It does not take you long to notice him on the ice as he glides up ice with the puck. As the Everett season has worn on, and they’ve lost a number of defenseman, Mueller has taken a more offensive role with the Silverrtips and often will be manning the point on the power play. He is very smart with the puck and gets into good areas to help the offense move. Through 45 games with Everett, Mueller has put up five goals and 23 points.Mueller projects to be a solid two-way defenseman in the NHL. He isn’t going to put up gaudy scoring numbers but he will move the puck for you, chip in offensively and can play on both special teams. Many players coming to the CHL from Europe have a difficult time adjusting to the physical and chippy aspect of the North American game. Watching Mueller you see him going into the dirty areas and not being afraid to drop the gloves for his teammates." Edited May 1, 2013 by JackStraw Quote
Dynamo 47 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I REALLY like Nurse but that is too high a price to pay. I would rather let destiny takes it's course and take the best defenseman available at 11. In several updated mock drafts some have Nikita Zadorov and Ristolainen falling to 11 so we can still get a quality guy with the pick Quote
Jmdodgesrt4 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I really think your going to have a player or two projected in top five fall back into late teens. Especially the Russians. I believe one is signed for two more years over there. Quote
flyercanuck Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 @Jmdodgesrt4 Nichushkin might fall. I bet he doesn't fall past the Devils though. Quote
RonJeremy Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 What we really need more than anything is an offensive defenseman with a great point shot, and puck rushing ability. That is our most glaring weakness on the defense. We do not need a defensive guy ,we already have Schenn, Grossman, and Laurednsson as the big hitting, defensive guys. Coburn can skate but has no offensive skill and cant hit the net. Gus has some offensive skill, but hes been injury prone and is not very big. Timmo is fading out and has one year left before retirement. Mez is a question mark as is Bourdon.THE TIME IS NOW TO DRAFT AN OFFENSIVELY SKILLED DEFENSEMAN,WE HAVE PUT IT OFF LONG ENOUGH.I dont want some soft euro puss or some typical inconsistent Russian. I dont think we have a shot at Nurse who is a combo of skill and toughness, so maybe we go with Pulock, who has good size and the best shot and who some say could end up as the steal of the draft. I would love to see us somehow get another first round pick and get 2 defenseman. Quote
OccamsRazor Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 (edited) I think you are vastly underestimating Coburns value.Well this has nothing to do with Coburn......but it does have something with fast tracking a defenseman to the flyers.....Reece Willcox is a RH shot that is playing at Cornell, that should play for Everett Silvertips who own his rights instead of college.Because whomever they select this year ain't going be ready for seveal more years.Unless he really values his education he'd be best suited like Stolarz playing against better competion every night.Good report on him.6' 3" 193lbsWillcox immediately stepped in as a top-four defenseman, logging substantial minutes both on the penalty kill and at even strength. He was the only Big Red freshman and only one of six players overall to appear in all 34 games. Willcox was on the ice for 20 of the Big Red's 50 even-strength goals, which ranked second on the team among defenseman (behind only Nick D'Agostino).Who knows what Homer has planed if he has a plan.Or in another year he may just land on the Phantoms.Well if Gus starts on the big club there will be nothing really skating with the Phantoms but OL and Manning...gulp.Need to stock the cupboard for a long season stop all these crazy trades from happening...can look within. flyercanuck Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 @OccamsRazor After we fell out of the top 5 I had no visions of whoever we take making the team. Maybe they'll surprise us. Or management will rush him. But my guess is he's a couple or three years away. Quote
Jmdodgesrt4 Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 I beg to differ. There are at least twelve players that should be on opening night rosters in this draft. If they are already heads and shoulders over their competition and too young to play for the ahl I think you'll see our pick out there on opening night. Quote
doom88 Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 I disagree with rushing guys to the NHL. I am very concerned with development, which while at a lower level of competition, would yield significantly more minutes and situations per game. The guys need experience to reach full potential in my opinion. Quote
flyercanuck Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 @doom88 I don't think it ever hurt anyone to take the long way to the NHL. Lots of guys careers have been ruined or derailed by rushing them. Quote
flyercanuck Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 @Jmdodgesrt4 TWELVE? That's a lot. Like I said, the top 5...maybe a couple more but I can't see that many. Care to name them just out of curiousity? Quote
Jmdodgesrt4 Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Jones, drouin, mackinnon, barkov, nichushkin, nurse, ristolainen ,shinkaruk, zadorov, pulock, haag, lindholm. I really think your going to see Haag move up a bit and nurse go easily top 5. That Russian kid might slide back because of the contract with Russia, but he's ready for the nhl. Pulock I think will move up and make the team. This draft is looking amazing and if either pulock, nurse, ristolainen is Still there at eleven thank your lucky stars. I know I would be looking at moving my second if need be and coby to get into the 1st round again. I like morrissey and there's another dman turning some heads and a goalie as well. Can't think of their names right now though. Quote
flyercanuck Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 I can't comment on guys like Hagg or Lindholm or Ristolainen cause all I see are highlights. I can make Bryzgalov look great in a highlight package, but not in a real game. I doubt Nurse is NHL ready. Or Shinkaruk. Or Pulock. I've been watching Zadorov in this series against my Colts, and he's certainly big. Aaron Ekblad, who is 17 looks more NHL ready than him. And he's not. I'm pretty sure the top 5 could and Nichushkin could if he wasn't in the K. But after that it's going to be up to the team that draft them whether they need an 18 year old who's borderline or not. As for moving up, Holmgren has to decide if he still wants to win now or rebuild (and I'm not saying we can win now but Holmgren likely thinks so). Trading Coburn is a step back at the present time. That 2nd could bring in a good goalie prospect. At some point we HAVE to stop trading 2nds away. Quote
