Buffalo Rick
Its time they did something about the size of these goalie pads. Its gotten crazy the size of them. How can you score if there is no room to shoot? They must go back to pads somewhere between now and the ones in the 70's. Remember when you used to see them measure the curves on sticks during a game and guys would go to the box for an illegal stick? I expect the same in goaltenders to take place at some point. flyercanuck
@Hockey JunkieBeen a pet peeve of mine for years. It's ridiculous the size of the pads. Throw in a 6'4" goalie with those pads and there's not much daylight, is there?
JR Ewing
As ever, I see it as only being reasonable to suggest that, at some point, goalie pads exceeded their use for protection and entered the realm of performance enhancement. A change would good so long as it doesn't impact player safety.JR
J0e Th0rnton
Yup. Pads today are twice as big and half as heavy. Remember when the leather soaked up water and by the 3rd period, goalies really were tested?
goalnut3133
It's crazy, compared to today's standards, the goalies back then looked like 'stick men' in goal, half the net or more was exposed! Amazing also that they were even protected properly, but I guess the shots weren't as fast or hard either with today's carbon composite sticks & wicked curved blades. flyercanuck
@goalnut3133 They actually had bigger curves back then. But most goalies aren't even athletic anymore...they just stand there a the puck hits them cause theres nowhere to shoot.
goalnut3133
@flyercanuck Yes, I totally agree, they hardly have to move as much anymore, but then with all that marshmallow padding, they're like the Michelin man...how can they move? lol
yave1964
And not just pads but equipment itself has gotten out of control. I swear Corey Crawford in an interview right after Game six against Boston looked like the Stay puff marshmallow man, his shoulder pads were almost higher than his head. This needs addressed and soon, the number one way of allowing skill to take the game back over and produce more offense would be to regulate equipment size. JR Ewing
I'd like it to be addressed, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it. We've all been saying this for at least ten years.JR
Haliax
@JR EwingI thought that they did implement some restrictions a couple years ago? Or was that more to do with shoulder pads? I tried to look it up but couldn't find anything. Maybe it's just my head making things up.
blocker
Remember when the leather soaked up waterWe had a shoe repair shop. In the winter, there were always a pile of goalie pads waiting to be fixed. Edited July 19, 2013 by blocker
