@Polaris922

I think he is overpaid. After watching the way he doesn't pursue the puck into the corners I think this is a bad deal. OH WAIT, it is for the penguins.

Nothing like nearly 30% of the available cap space gone to 2 players.

It's a "break" (way less than Sid over the life of the deal) but "break" to me is on the annual cap hit.

Hope Letang likes St. Louis!

Pretty much tells me Malkin is comfortable being second fiddle. He could easily have left and become "The Man" on another team. Not sure if thats good or bad.

This is what I was saying in the other thread that he'll get more than Sid (AAV) because he can only re-sign for 8 years and not 12.

Good for the Pens for keeping the core together.

Pouilot Depres....

there's two guys with potential to be very good all around defensemen. I didn't even think about it for long, and ... and if you really want another Letang: Olli Maata was looking pretty clueless in his own end in the Memorial Cup games i watched, just saying.

losing him will be felt for a season then, when those young guys get with it, it'll be LeWho ?

Actually I hope the flyers sign him ... gives us a new defensman to hate.

I don't put it past Shero to find a way to keep Letang. Malkin is a major piece though so I'm glad they got him extended, and for very similar numbers to Sid. Shorter contract always means slightly higher money (cap hit), but I think he's worth it. He could have fetched much more elsewhere I'm sure. Glad he wanted to stay.

Given the cap is going down, how much more of a cap hit do you think another team would have been willing to make? I don't think many teams out there would have spent much more than 9.5 mil per year. I'm not saying the Pens over paid, but I think they paid close to fair market value for him and certainly didn't get a hometown "steal." The value however is in that the Pens keep the major components of a close knit core together.

For a number one center, who has won a Cup and the Ross.... I think there are a few teams with lots of cap space that may have ponied up more. Ovechkin's contract is higher and a couple years old, and he hasn't performed as well as Malkin has of late. Yes the cap is coming down we're told, but the players don't seem to know that. I think if Malkin or Crosby were to hit the UFA market, you could see a $10-$12 million per year paycheck signing depending on length.

Malkin likes being out if the spotlight a little, but what would a team like Phoenix, Columbus, or say Nashville pay to have that as a ticket draw? Talent like his is not easy to come by.

This is a good point. But clubs aren't allowed to pay any one player more than 20% of their team total. Nashville already has Webers contract...I doubt they're going anywhere near that salary on another player. Columbus would be a borderline team and the numbers just wouldn't work on one player. Phoenix just plain couldn't afford it.

I disagree on all of the above. Phoenix will look for a star player to replace Doan as his days are numbered, though until ownership is settled it's a coin toss. Of course you have to remember we're talking AFTER the coming season, as he had one year left with a NMC. Columbus just picked up Gaborik, and the new GM expressed interest in a "star center" to compliment Gabby. As for Nashville... They're sorely lacking forward talent. You just don't know who would show interest to spark ticket sales, etc...

Those were just three clubs that came to mind. There are still the Dallas', Rangers, Isles... Numerous teams that aren't afraid to throw $$ down or in need of that star talent. I've learned from your own team's habits, don't put it past anyone.

Polaris was he under contract already for one more season or was he a RFA after the conclusion of this season...thanks ahead of time.

He had one more season. The trick was if July 5th got here without the extension a no movement clause kicked in so the Pens would have their hands tied trying to move him if they couldn't re-sign him. He became a UFA after next season so if he was after bigger $ he had the controls come July.

True. Or they could just tank or get Uncle Gary to give them one, as we've learned from another teams habits.

Guess we'll have to see if any generational talents are due for draft day next year. Honestly I wasn't knocking your team for it. They're far from the only ones spending big. As I said the Rangers definitely spring to mind. And with Tortorella gone I'm wondering who they'll be trying to sign for Nash...
