AMMOnation Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Steve Mason & Johnathon Bernier.Steve Mason took tournament MVP, Canada took gold. Also on that team, Giroux, Simmonds & Luke Schenn.(Of note, Bobrovsky started for Russia).Mason was more touted than Bernier, came up on terrible Blue Jacket teams. Bernier highly touted as well, came up on stacked Kings teams. We got Mason for a shooter-tutor, Maple Leafs got Bernier for good prospects. My final comments. People flame the Flyers for trading away players before they development. That is the market we live in, we are win now 24/7 because we spend money on training, free agents, scouting, ect. But, the Flyers took a dose of their own medicine this time and swiped Mason, once a top prospect, in time for his prime. 1 Quote

They couldn't wait to trade him after getting a Vezina winning goalie from us. Bob is their starter going forward so that made Mason expandable, I remember reading that Homer had been trying to trade for Mason the past few years and Columbus wasn't interested in moving him til they got a true no.1 goalie. doom88 Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Time will tell, I suggest patience. I don't think the clock is out on Mason at all. Quote
ruxpin Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 @AMMOnationI guess time will tell whether your post is ultimately true or just hopeful thinking. But in the meantime it makes me feel better so I'm just going to go with it. Quote
OccamsRazor Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 They couldn't wait to trade him after getting a Vezina winning goalie from us.Look it's sad they traded him i ain't happy about it and since i've been a Flyer fan he is the best prospect the Flyers have ever had.Now with that said there is no need to get all excited about Bob winning the vezina after only playing 37 figgin games....Jim Carey had one spectacular year too one time.Let's see Bob do that for a full season first till then get down off the ledge... Quote

jammer2 Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 (edited) @OccamsRazor Bob is way more talented than Jim Carey ever was...guess you could throw Andrew Raycroft into the pile also. Thing that gets me....so many of us clearly saw the pure raw athleticism that Bob possessed. Homer should be fired for that move alone. The Kings held on to Bernier for 8 full years, allowing them to have a better than average back up...AND allowed them to get the best deal possible. If Homer waits one more year, and his talents stick even out more, they would not have even dealt him....this will haunt me forever....and I'll neve forgive Homer for his brutal lack of patience in this case. OccamsRazor Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 (edited) Bob is way more talented than Jim Carey ever wasYes without a doubt my point being is anyone can put it together for one year...which to me is meaningless unless with that one year it brings the Cup...then it's all for not......just would like people to calm down about Bob let him win the vezina over a 82 game schedule before we anoint him the next one though.. The Kings held on to Bernier for 8 full years, allowing them to have a better than average back upWell they had goaltenders already in Quick Labarbra (sp)and Ersberg to fill in giving them the chance...Homer can't find a goaltender if he had the #1 over all in the draft!Thing that gets me....so many of us clearly saw the pure raw athleticism that Bob possessed.I haven't been a fan as long as some here but as long as i've followed the Flyers he is the best i've ever seen them have. jammer2 Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 @OccamsRazor Yep, Bob was the best pure athletic goalie we have had since Pelle, so if you don't go back that far, he was the best.... Quote

ruxpin Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 @OccamsRazorWhat? No Jeff Hackett? C'mon, it takes a real athlete to stay in net when he sees multiple pucks coming at him. Quote
OccamsRazor Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 No Jeff Hackett?Well he was 6' 1"...so i'll give him honorable mention...make him #6.....but what about our last Cup tender(MFL) where oh where do i put him?????? Quote

King Knut Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Like many European goalies, bob is at his best when playing for a bad team. He actually hurts a good team. We need a goalie who can help a good team if we're going to succeed. Still utterly moronic to have needed to lose him because of idiotic decisions by homer and lavvy, but whatever, vexing or not... I don't know that I think bob's a vezina winner I he's on a better team. By my interpretation he should've been a All Star goalie on our team then. Quote
King Knut Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 I said he's better on a bad team and could end up hurting a good team. Like a quarterback who can throw like hell and run like hell but can't read a defense to save his life... He'll only get you so far. Bob's style tends to not work well with a solid D (which means he might have been just what we needed this past year). Indeed as a flyer he may have been an all star and won the trophy, I just don't think he would have helped the team win much more. Certainly not in the playoffs. I'm also not being completely fair because I don't get to see him every night anymore and I suppose it's possible that he completely changed his style in a year at Columbus. My rhetorical point ultimately was that we have no idea if we'd actually prefer bob. We think we do, but I have a suspicion that he simply fell into a situation that allows him to shine as he is wihout working on the team oriented problems with his game and that he will ultimately not help the team to excel at an elite cup competitive level. There's more to being a successful goalie than stopping pucks. Ask Roman Cechmanek, he was the Vezina runner up his first year... How well did that work out?Huh? You say Bob plays at his best on a bad team and then stats he's on a better team. I have no idea what you trying to say. By my interpretation he should've been a All Star goalie on our team then. flyercanuck Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 @King Knut Watching Bob I saw a guy with incredible reflexes and an incredibly positive attitude. How could you not like playing in front of him. Watching Bryz I wondered "How did this guy last this long in the NHL?" Quote
Vincent05 Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 @King KnutWe saw flashes of Bob when he was here, he just needed time to work out hus flaws and to gain experience. I hated the trade last year and now it bites us in the ass as we have no goalie yet again. Quote
jammer2 Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 @King Knut I think Bob is the exact same goalie skill wise as he was in Philly. 2 things helped him out.1) experience2) The Blue Jackets play this blanketing style that is goalie friendly. Constant pressure from back checking forwards who play with a sense of desperation and urgency. Quote
ruxpin Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Constant pressure from back checking forwards who play with a sense of desperation and urgency ...and not a lick of offense.Fixed it. Quote
