This comparison is painful to see

I knew our defense as a whole was overpaid, but wow... I had no idea how it compared to other teams:

The Flyers have approximately $28 million committed to eight defensemen, and that does not include Chris Pronger's $4.91 million deal, which will come off the cap after the season starts.

Chicago had only one defenseman last season (Duncan Keith) who earned more than $3.5 million.

The Flyers' Kimmo Timonen ($6 million), Mark Streit ($5.25 million), Braydon Coburn ($4.5 million), Andrej Meszaros ($4 million), Luke Schenn ($3.6 million) and Nick Grossmann ($3.5 million) are all over that mark.

@brelic

If you look at our forwards, their salaries are actually pretty good. Because they were either drafted, or did most of their development with the Flyers. The D are usually mercenaries.

Holy crap on a cracker.

Ok, apparently Frank hasn't heard of capgeek.com or was looking at the wrong numbers, because there were in fact 3 players at or above $3.5M last year:

Keith ($5.5M), Seabrook ($5.8M), and Hjalmarsson ($3.5M).

That makes a LOT more sense...

Frank Seravalli is an imbecile. He just makes **** up. Right off the top of his little pathetic head. I wouldn't wipe my ass with his diploma/degree/birth certifcate.

He puts these little tidbits of fecal matter in every single work of fiction he writes and pretends like no one is going to notice. His existence, and the fact he collects a pay check (and oxygen) just really pisses me off.

Speaking of fecal matter, last night on CSN (the show used to be called Daily News Live, but they changed it and I forget now--I think Sports Talk Live or some crap), they had Jeremy Roenick on the phone into the studio. On the bottom it has the label "NBC hockey analyst."

They asked him about the goaltending situation and he says he's not at all confident in Mason. There's a reason he's moved around so much the past few years. There's just something about him. Something's not there. It's proven by the fact he's moved around so much. No one seems to want to keep him."

He actually repeated the above nonsense several times. Um, Jeremy, he hasn't moved AT ALL until he was traded to the Flyers. I think you got hit too hard in the mouth by that puck. I can only guess the idiot was thinking Chris Mason, but what kind of "hockey analyst" are you when you don't know who the hell you're talking about on one of the teams you actually played for???

STFU JR.

Tell me how you really feel :D

That was a pretty important part of his article... not sure how you can get that wrong. And don't they have fact checkers anymore???

@ruxpin maybe mixed up with Chris Mason? Eithe way, JR, Frank, and Sam all are irrelevant when it comes to information. At least Eklund slaps on a numbering system to show how much he made up.

Not at the Philly papers. Facts are just extra but not necessary. @brelic, Frank does this in nearly every article. Sometimes it's an important part that he's building an argument from; sometimes it's just a paragraph thrown in that doesn't even belong with the rest of the article but he needed to add copy. But either way, there is almost always something in his article that makes you scratch your head and wonder what the hell he is talking about. He's a hack. I'm sorry, but it's just insulting to the reader because it's just complete fantasy land material for invalids. Actually, it just occurred to me who toughfighter might be...

Yeah, I'm fairly certain he had it mixed up with Chris Mason. But again, what kind of "NBC Hockey Analyst" are you when you have no idea who the goalie is on a team you actually played for? I mean, it's one thing for one of us to make that mistake. It's another for a "NBC Hockey Analyst." Exactly what the hell are you really analyzing, Jeremy?

Yeah, I agree with adding Sam to that list.

Well, then again it's JR. He could have been talking about himself

Well the NHL channel isn't then much better. Yesterday they spoke of 21 goalies that have played for the Flyers since the 1997-98 season. And after going back to check there have been 24.

lol @hf101

Well, at least they got the first digit right, I guess. I bet if you asked them, they'll tell you they didn't count three of them for whatever reason (like, "well, Jeff Hackett wasn't really a goalie.").

How does that happen in a large metro area like Philly? Are there no top level NHL journalists around???

By the way, brelic, it's actually worse than that. Because Frank's wording was "earned," not cap hit. So according to him only one earned more than $3.5M.

The correct answer in the "earned" column is 4 (from nhlnumbers.com)

Seabrook 7.0M

Keith 8.0M

Hialmarsson 3.5M

Oduya 4.0M

The interesting thing is that TWO Hawks dmen actually earned more than any Flyer defenseman who actually played (ie., not named Pronger). And Keith actually "earned" more than Pronger and Seabrook only $200K less than Pronger.

I mean, Seravalli is just simply WAY out there on this one and actually builds a case based on this idiotic premise.

Well, they're signed because they used to have skill way back in the day. But by the time they come to Philly they're tired and lazy and just go through the motions. The journalists that actually are trained and learn in Philly go to other cities to do their best work.

(In seriousness, both Philly papers are owned by the same meathead and journalistic integrity is absent whether it is sports, local politics, or a fluff piece on the local carnival. It's a travesty what has happened to the Inquirer, because it was once a very good newspaper).

@ruxpin

Actually Hackett was on their list, but when I went to check after flyercanuck posted Hoffort, I realized they missed Hoffort and 2 others. lol

I think I would have had Hoffort if I actually spent a little time researching it, but I actually don't even remember Hoffort at all so I wouldn't have come up with 24 if I were just trying to tick them off. But yeah, you'd think NHL network would have spent the little time researching it.

Did you mean 97-98 or did you mean 87-88?

Because Hoffort would have played before 1997 (89-90 and 90-91 --whopping 9 games). Like I said, I have absolutely no memory of him (it was while I was in college if that explains anything) so I had to look him up.

JR played for 6 different teams.

Chris Mason played for 4 different teams

Steve Mason CBJ, and Phi.

Yeah JR's kind of an idiot.

Frank seems to be a narcissistic egoist. Is that redundant? I think so. Anyway, Frank likes to pick one focus on every story where he thinks he has an original genius idea, or outlook on, and then tries to run it out there like it's the holy grail of ideas.

In other words... he's an imbecile.

This was my first thought. Until we can draft and develop young defensemen on this team we just are going to keep overpaying for them.
