This was the season opener for Ritten. They are hosting the Bisons in their tournament next weekend. Former Jet Chris Mason was tending the goal for the first two periods during which the Germans mounted a 3-0 lead. Two of those goals came on a 5 minute major. At least that's what I picked up from the translations. Riessersee is from the DEL2.

Deggendorfer Fire 1

This game was not part of Rosenheim's previously announced schedule. Deggendorfer is from the Oberliga, Germany's 3rd tier league. By the early results it would appear that there is quite a difference between the Oberliga and the DEL2. Tyler McNeely and Shawn Weller each scored again for the Starbulls. Rosenheim is now 2-1-1 and their next game is Tuesday against the Bisons.

Fischtown won beat Hannover, another Oberliga team, for the 2nd time this year. The Pinguins are now 3-0-0 in the pre-season. Next up for them is the Ritten tournament, and a Saturday game against the Manitoba Bisons.

The Bisons started their European vacation on a sour note. The first thing to jump out at me was that the Bisons had a very weak line-up dressed. From last year's starters in the playoffs, they had only one defenceman and 5 forwards dressed. I do not know if they had some injuries or if loads of guys failed to make the trip, or just droped out. IAE, the Bisons dressed only 16 skaters, when European rules allow 20. And one of those dressed was Bison assistant coach Riley Dudar!

I followed along at the Pointstreak link, which is very much like LeagueStat. There were two jersey numbers listed as "New Player". One turned out to be Dudar and the other was Pierre Landry, an unannounced newcomer on defence. He has transferred from Briercrest and previously played for the Wayway Wolverines in the MJHL. Here was the line-up  (the line combos were not given):

The players listed under "MIA" are eligible to return. Depape is the only new recruit in that list. What are the rest doing?

Other than Landry, other unannounced newcomers to suit up were Joey Rewucki (goaltender from the Selkirk Steelers of the MJHL) and Reid MacLeod (forward from Sacred Heart of the NCAA who red-shirted and played for the Stonewall Flyers last year).

Travis Bobbee started the scoring after 5 minutes, but that was it for the Bisons. Each goaltender played a period, Caligiuri started and was succeeded by Dubyk and Rewucki.

None of the summaries include shots on goal, so it is hard to glean just what kind of a game it was. The score was only 2-1 after 36 minutes of play. Then two quick 2nd period goals by the Starbulls gave them a stranglehold.

These teams started the 2011 tour as well. Rosenheim also had a 4-1 lead after two periods that night, only to lose in a shootout.

The Bisons' next game is Thursday against EHC Klostersee. Rosenheim will not play until Friday against the Sterzing Broncos.

A special guest at the game was Karl Friesen, goaltender and formerly of the West Kildonan North Stars and St. Boniface Mohawks. He also played 12 seasons for Rosenheim and for the German (or West German) national team in 6 world championships and 3 Olympic games (1984, 1988, and 1992). He also had a cup of coffee with the New Jersey Devils (pre-Brodeur).

Aug. 28: Bison Practice

 

So I popped in at the Max Bell to take my son skating and instead of public skating there was "Bison Men's Practice" on the board. Since it was so hot outside we wanted to check out the ice and, indeed, there was a Bison men's hockey practice, featuring 2 goaltenders and 9 skaters. That explains the short-staffed squad in Europe. I could not identify everybody. But Blair Macaulay and Dane Crowley had numbers on their helmets making them identifiable. I also thought I saw alumni Chris Benias out there. How many short guys with a #17 helmet are out there? There should be plenty of competition for spots when the two camps come together.

According to the Klostersee website, the last word on the game was cancelled due to an ice plant problem. However, on the Bison site they have the score without any link to a story or summary. A web search revealed nothing. Klostersee is on  Pointsreak for regular season only. So I am unable to say what the Bisons did and if they remain short-staffed.

The Ritten tournament produced a pair of exciting games on day one. The Bisons were featured in the opener. I have thus far been unable to locate a line-up or a proper summary. However several links have listed the scorers:

So, 4 of the 5 Bison goals were scored by newcomers. The result also shows improvement from the opening game against Rosenheim, who are ranked at the same level as Fischtown.

In the afternoon, the North Germans met the college boys from Manitoba and saw a long time like the sure winner from. But the guys at the University team managed at a brisk game even the 5:5 compensation, before they had to admit defeat after extra time in the shootout.

The penguin did very hard against the young, hungry Canadian bottom line. Although the Bremerhaven were optically far superior. But in the last third tore the thread. The Penguin gave a 5-3 lead out of hand and escaped with difficulty into the shootout. Here redeemed Brendan Cook and his colleagues transformed attempt.

Two weeks before the start of the DEL-II match of the season, the penguin was already very well regarded. The washer ran smoothly, the setting was right. However, there were still one or other negligence on the defensive, were punished by the bison with goals against.

In the second semi-final, the penguin doing heavy expects al against the young Canadians of Manitoba Bsons. DEL2 the club was in the final period a 5-3 lead out of hand and escaped with difficulty into the shootout. Here Brendan Cook scored but still the decisive goal for the North Germans.

The hosts from Ritten fell behind the Wild Geese by 3-0 before mounting a comeback and winning in overtime. Travis Ramsay set up the two goals which started the comeback.

Sunday's games will see the Bisons face the Wild Geese for 3rd place, followed by the Pinguins against Ritten for 1st place.

The Evil Monkeys announced two more recruits - forward Jamie Crooks (Victoria) and goaltender Luke Siemens (Prince Albert).

The Bisons have played many things.

They have played several types of animals, like Monkeys, Pronghorns, Beavers, Badgers, Bears, and Mavericks.

And mythological ones like Thunderbirds and Griffins, and extinct ones like Dinosaurs.

Not to forget birds like Ooks and Hawks, or canines like Thunderwolves and two kinds of Huskies.

The felines have been abundant, including Bobcats, Lions, Tigers, and two colours of Cougars. They even played two colours: Reds and Blues.

In a celestial sense they have faced North Stars, Starbulls, and once even Cyclones.

For people they have faced Nor'Westers and Wesmen, Fighting Sioux and Redmen, 99ers, Trojans, Patriotes, and even Cannibals.

Transportation modes have also been encountered, like Clippers and Trucks. They once faced the Jets, and later the Mooses.

But until today they had never faced Gooses!

None of the links tells much about the Bison game. They were down 0-2 early then scored to go into the 1st intermission down 1-2. They then dominated the 2nd (with 2 goals) and 3rd (with 3 goals) periods. Italian hockey is short on statistical links so I may never find the line-ups, goaltenders, or even scorers for the tour.

In the end, the Bisons go 2-1-1 on the tour. Even when short staffed, they should beat teams from the OBL and INL (which they did) and have tight games against the DEL2 (which they did in Saturday's shootout against Fischtown). Now the Euro tourists will come home and join the group training at the Max Bell.

As for the tournament opponents, Neumarkt/Egna are happy that they went to overtime against Ritten/Renon, a team from a higher league. Fischtown had two wins in shootouts. It seems that Ritten/Renon is also happy with Chris Mason, Travis Ramsay, and their other new recruits, who all played key roles.

The Bisons next play in Hillbillyland where the bulk of the CW teams will converge for a mix-match of exhibition games. Actually, it would be nice to be able to see so many teams in one venue. The Herd will face the Bedrock Boys on Friday, Sept. 13 and the Evil Monkeys on Saturday, Sept. 14.

The home debut will be against the Regina Cougars on Sept. 20-21 with 2:00 p.m. starts both days. The pre-season will conclude with home games against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sept. 27-28.

Sept. 4: Macaulay Goes Pro, Domestic Pre-Season Begins

 

Blair Macaulay, the Bisons' top scorer, and one of the best players in the CIS, has signed a pro deal. He and his brother, Scott Macaulay, are headed off to the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL, an Edmonton Oilers affiliate. Both played for the Winnipeg Saints. Thereafter, Scott went to the NCAA and Blair to the WHL.

The quote tells just how good he was:

Macaulay played four seasons (2009-13) at Manitoba and was selected as a two-time Canada West men’s hockey MVP during 2011-12 and 2012-13 season – only the second player in the award's 35-year history to win the award in consecutive seasons. The Winnipeg native had a very successful career with the Bisons and his accolades included being named a 2012-13 CIS First Team All-Canadian, 2011-12 CIS Second Team All-Canadian, being named Canada West First Team All-Star in three consecutive seasons (2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13) and part of the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets 2012 Development Camp roster.

What it does not say is that he started as a 4th-liner and penalty killer and quickly moved his way up in the order. Check out the Elite Prospects stats page. The 23 goals in 28 regular season games in 2011-12 was quite incredible.

I saw him at a Bison workout during the team's European tour. However, I also believe I saw Chris Benias and perhaps other former Bisons there as well. Whether the team thought he might return is something I just don't know.

The Bisons' next games are in Regina where they will face Bedrock on Friday, September 13 and the Evil Monkeys on Saturday, September 14.

Sept. 6: Monkeys win, More recruiting news

The Selkirk Steelers website announced that their former goaltender Joey Rewucki is attending the U of M on a scholarship. I did see his name on the roster/stats pages when the Bisons faced Rosenheim (see post from Aug. 27th) and posted his stats.

The Selkirk Steelers announce that former goaltender Joey Rewucki  has accepted a scholarship to play for the University of  Manitoba Bison's men’s hockey team for the upcoming 2013-2014 season.

Rewucki, originally from East St. Paul was an original draft pick of the Steelers and played four  years starting  with the 2008/09 season. During his time with the Steelers, Rewucki played in 168 games compiling a 3.22 goals against average and a career .911 save %. He was a three time all-star, Steelers MVP in 2010 and was twice nominated by the MJHL for the leagues top goaltender.

And, the GoBisons.ca website is being renovated. One effect is that bookmarked links to specific pages no longer work. It appears that they are trying to add content to the new site bit-by-bit. The site is one of those awkward new ones where your screen is full of banners and menus that appear and vanish and basically just leave room for an inch of actual content to be visible at any one time. Compare new to the really old one and see which had the better utility.

As with game 1, all we have is a list of scorers from the Monkeys' site: Brett Ferguson, Torrie Dyck and Thomas Carr. So now the records of the three teams to see action so far are:

There was also a piece in the Edmontown Examiner on new Monkey goaltender Luke Siemens. Although he has great credentials, it is hard to see him improving the Monkey goaltending. Kurtis Mucha stole games for them last year, including one memorable night in Manitoba.


There is no announcement yet from Sask on their recruits. However, we get word from Fort Mac that one of the Keyano Huskies' goaltenders is shifting to another pack of mutts. Matthew Smidt is shifting from remote Alberta to the Spitoon. BTW, Sask's site really sucks.

I also came across a piece on Yahoo about the CIS's improved exposure in general. Cited are:

This used to be an annual fixture so it is good to see it back. And the Monkeys beat the Greasers, so score one for the CIS. Then again, it was ONLY the Greasers. BTW, the Greasers only had 2 shots on goal in the 3rd period. The Mobnkeys are throwing feces in celebration as they are now 4-0-0 in the exhibition season.

The Flames outshot the Dinos 35-29 in what sems to have been a free-wheeling game. The difference in the game was that the Flames were 4-for-8 on the PP. The Dinos are now 0-3-0 in the pre-season.

Regina was supposed to travel to Weyburn to face the Red Wings on Sept. 10. However, there is nothing about the game on either the U of R or Weyburn sites. Weyburn's Twitter reminded of the game at 12:58 pm. It was listed on the SJHL LeagueStat games, but none of those have scores or links. My assumption? Banjoland ran out of electricity. But Regina is hosting 6 of 8 CW teams this weekend. That would be nice to see. I would love tio sit through 3 hockey games per day.

The Bisons are off to Regina where they will not play the Cougars, nor any team from Banjoland. Instead they will face two teams from Saudi Alberta (Bedrock and the Evil Monkeys) on neutral ice. The Banjo-Mutts and H0rny Ones will also be there. The weekend schedule is:

There is not much in pre-event information to share at this point. The U of M site, since being re-minted, has no updates and in fact has lost the story on Macaulay turning pro and the scores from their European tour.

This makes it time for an annual rant: Why don't CIS teams get their websites going in advance of the pre-season? Should they not have training camp rosters available? Could they not have even a small story on the opening weekend? This would be an easy first step towards getting media coverage in their local marketplaces.

Here's where the websites stand:

Manitoba - The roster page has deleted all 5th year players from last year. It still includes last year's 3rd and 4th years who graduated and does not include any new recruits. Before the website was "modernized" the schedule page had the scores from the European tour. Those have been removed and they have not even added a story on the tour. The roster page does tell us that Tyler Dittmer is now a conditioning coach, along with Riley Dudar.

Alberta - The schedule page has a link to a linescore of each game so far, and a story on the Oiler game. Their roster page is not available yet.

Calgary and Lethbridge - The schedule pages are updated but are without links (which may change this weekend. The roster pages are 2012-13.

Regina - They have their 2013-14 roster looking complete. They have 8 defencemen listed, which after being short-handed last year will be a luxury. The schedule page deleted a previously scheduled game with Weyburn but appears up-to-date.

Saskatchewan - I do not know what their site is doing. When you go there you get all their players' dopey faces but no actual site. So who knows. They must be wiping their butts on the carpet again.

This was the first CIS exhibition game of the season outside of those involving CW teams. The McGilligutties led 6-2 at one time, and had a massive edge on the shot clock as well. But the Bees scrambled back to make the score respectable, at least.

Fun fact: The Bees have two players named "Hugo". Can any other hockey team make that claim?

Thanks to Gilligan at CISfootball.org we have confirmation that this game was actually played! I do have to wonder why the team websites never had anything on it, though. It was played on September 10th.

Nick Clark started in goal for Weyburn, and allowed 3 goals on 22 shots through half the game. Veteran, Nate Ferris then took over, but Regina kept coming. The boys really had to compete for puck possession, as the final shots ended up being 46-14 in favour of Regina. Last night was also a good opportunity to shake off the summer dust, and get reacquainted with physical play.

Both teams entered the game at 2-0-0 on the weekend. The Evi; Monkeys outscored their opponents 24-1 over 3 games. The 4-0 win over the Bisons looks like a good result for Manitoba in the circumstances.

The "new and improved" Bison website is taking its sweet time getting up and running. The schedule link has the scores for last week, but no links. The roster has 2012-13 players, less the 5th years. And even the story on Macaulay going pro has not been added.

To top it all off, the games are at 2:00 because the Bummers play the Igloo Dwellers in a CFL game on Friday. Could they not move that to Sunday afternoon where it belongs and would not get in the way of campus Friday night activity? IMO the U if M should be firm on there being no Friday or Saturday night games once CIS sports start.

This was a matinee and I was able to leave work about 15 minutes before it started. The game must have had almost no stoppage time because I arrived with under 6 minutes left in the 1st period. And it was already 3-0 for the Bisons.

Going over the Bison roster, there were some previously unannounced arrivals and departures. Some names popped up from the European tour.

Arrivals:

3. Pierre Landry - defence - Briercrest Clippers - EP Stats
- He played just one year at Briercrest after having played in the MJHL, mostly with Waywayseecappo. Although he scored the opening goal, he is mostly a defensive type. They have only 8 d-men on the roster so I assume he will be kept in a back-up role for the 6 veterans they have.

8. Jory Coates - forward - Pembina Valley Twisters - EP Stats
- It is not often that grads of the MMJHL get a look for the Bisons. A few years back two goaltenders were vying for the role of 3rd string goaltender. But this 6'6" late bloomer could be a catch, especially if he sticks it out for 5 years and keeps improving. When he graduated from Midget he played two seasons bouncing between the Neepawa Natives of the MJHL and the Twisters of the MMJHL. In 2011-12 he stuck it out with the Twisters and scored 3 goals in 40 games, and none in 6 playoff games. But last year he caught fire as the season wore on. With 24 goals in 45 games then had 13 in 17 playoff games as he led the Twisters to a surprise championship.

9. Andrew Dunsmore - forward - St. Vital Victorias - EP Stats
- He is another MMJHL grad and has not played since 2010-11. He never scored in 33 MMJHL games spread over 2 seasons. The question is whether they'll keep all 15 forwards around.

26. Justin Dalebozik - forward - Steinbach Pistons - EP Stats
- He was acquired by the Pistons mid-way through last season and was a factor in them going from below average to a shocking provincial championship. The question is whether he can contribute some goals.

28. Reid MacLeod - forward - Sacred Heart University - EP Stats
- He played for the Stonewall Flyers senior league team as he red-shirted last year. He peaked as a junior in 2007-08 when he scored 47 goals in 57 games for the Flin Flon Bombers. But the next year he plummeted to 13 goals in 49 games playing for the same team. In 3 seasons at Sacred Heart he had 8 goals in 53 games. Could he regain his scoring touch? He did have 19 goals in 19 senior league games last year.

Departures:

3. Eric Mestery - The former 2nd round draft choice of the Washington Capitals appears to have left hockey again. He retired in 2010 when still a junior in the WHL before making a brief comeback with the Selkirk Steelers in 2011, and then another with the Bisons last year.

6. Brodie Melnychuk - The former Wheatie was a Christmas newcomer who stabilized the defence last year. He does not appear to be involved in organized hockey this year.

Back to the game at hand, since the game was in the afternoon the only fans there were people playing hookey. It very much had the feel of an exhibition game for that reason.

On the down side, Ian Duval was injured late in the 2nd period on a knee clip. Hopefully he will be available for the start of the season.

In general, the Kittens rarely generated sustained pressure. One goal was a deflection of a point shot, one a breakaway which arose from an ill-conceived line change by a d-man, and one point shot that Caligiuri would like to have back.

The Bisons will be challenged to score this year. They have lost Blair Macaulay, Tyler Dittmer, Matthew Lowry, Del Cowan, and James Henry. One factor, though, is that returning players often improve. Craig Scott, Jesse Paradis, and Dylan Kelly are now 2nd year players and all seemed to be more effective and had strong games. Paradis was the only one of those to get regular ice time last year, in fact Scott was usually a scratch. Paradis was the 2nd star. Kelly was used on both the PK and PP.

One surprise was that newcomer Luke Paulsen, recruited as a defenceman, was used as a forward. And he was so effective that he was named 1st star.

Rematch goes Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Max Bell Arena.

It was tough spending a sunny Saturday afternoon indoors watching a hockey game. I would have much preferred the traditional Saturday night game, but there you go. Also, this year's Saturday games are going to be at 6:00 p.m. so I need to get used to this. I personally dislike the 6:00 p.m. start time. The Goldeyes have done it for 2 years now. It is hard to get your Saturday afternoon done that 1 hour earlier. I digress.

The Bisons went with the same line-up as Friday, except that Ian Duval was not dressed and Joe Caligiuri had the day off. Here's the alignment:

NOTES: Although the line-up card listed Sanfred King as #19, LeagueStat named Brody Luhning as #19 instead of #18. IAE I never noticed #19 on Saturday. As with Friday Magnus switched from #23 to #11 and Fowlie switched from #27 to #25. The only switch was #8 for #17, with #6 switching from D to F.

Going into the season my concern was with scoring. However, with 10 goals in 2 games maybe that ought not to be a concern. Perhaps injuries are the bigger concern. Other than the goaltender switch, the Bisons never dressed any of Friday's scratches. Even though Duval was sidelined they played with a 19 man roster rather than activate a player from the sub list.

Last year I saw enough of the Feline Hillbillies to get sick of them. They came here in pre-season, regular season, and playoffs for a weekend double-header. They looked like crap in all 6 games. While they have not made any earth-shattering additions, they have added bona fide defencemen. Last year they had forwards forced to drop back. This year they are tougher to play against, although they remain several notches below the Bisons in calibre.

However, Regina over-achieved something fierce last year. I was constantly shocked to look at the out-of-town scoreboard and see them pick up points here and there such that they left the New-Kittens-on-the-Block and the H0rny Ones in the dust.

Even though the Bisons did not trash the Cats like last year, they did ring up two convincing wins. The defence, even without Captain Crowley, limited them to mostly low quality shots from the perimeter.

Here's how it went. The Bisons got off to a quick 2-0 lead, with goals by newcomers Aaron Lewadniuk and Taylor Dickin within the first 3 minutes. Lewadniuk's goal was a conversion of a nice passing play. Dickin's was a solo effort after he was tripped on a delayed penalty call. Once ahead the Bisons seldom made any venturous offensive plays.

The intermission appeared to get the Bisons re-charged. Although the 2nd period was scoreless, the Bisons had dozens of nice passing plays which generated quality shots on goal. Each line was quite effective in that regard. Despite the lack of goals, the Bisons generated their most sustained offence in this period.

The 3rd period was much like the first. The Bisons scored two early goals within 3 something. Paul Ciarelli and Jesse Paradis converted passing plays. Then the Bisons went into a shell, playing very conservatively and generating few shots. There was also a steady flow of penalties which never helps a game to flow.

Regina's only goal was from d-man Mark Schneider during a 2-man advantage mid-way through the 3rd. The screen shot elluded Joey Rewucki, a rookie goaltender coming from the Selkirk Steelers. He made 14 saves in the period. Starting goaltender Deven Dubyk made 19 saves over two periods. They both looked sharp and would appear to be good backups for Caligiuri.

The three stars were Dickin, Lewadniuk, and Dubyk. Clearly, it was a good day for the new blood.

The Bisons are now 4-3-1 in the pre-season, and Regina is a respectable 3-3-0.

Next up for the Bisons is a home doubleheader against the Toronto Varsity Blues on homecoming weekend. Saturday's game goes at 7:00 (well after the Bison football game) and Sunday goes at 1:00.

Could MUN get a hockey team? It would appear unlikely:

“I probably get asked about three times a year, ‘Why doesn’t MUN have a hockey team?’,” said Healey. “We’re not getting asked that 300 times. We have had a number of consultation sessions [...] and there isn’t a public outcry for the need of a hockey team at MUN. So, I’m not really sure whether it’s a possibility or not. It is something that we certainly like to look at. I’d be the first in line to say I’d be a number one fan of a MUN hockey team. But, if you do the math on it—to run a competitive men’s hockey program and maybe offer gender contemplative women’s program, you wouldn’t be far off from a million dollars to try and make that happen.”

This game was played Saturday in UQTR's tournament. Both teams won on Friday, so this win gave Ottawa the title. Based on last year's performances that stands as quite a surprise. Final standings: Ottawa 1st, PEI 2nd, Moncton 3rd, and UQTR 4th.

This was Day 2 of the tournament. The 3rd place game between the Cajuns and SMUskies was called due to an injury. Dal-Lousy took the title with an OT win, in what must also be considered a surprise. You know what else would be a surprise? If the CIS finishes their investigation into Dal's financial irregularities before **** freezes over.

There are no new links at GoBisons.ca. It seems that new content was sacrificed when they updated the web page. However, once the games begin there should be live updates at LeagueStat, as happened last weekend.

The first thing I will want to check is the number of players available to the Bisons. Last weekend, once Ian Duval was injured on Friday, they played one short on Saturday.

This is the last weekend of play before the regular season starts next weekend with a home series against the Evil Monkeys. Are the Bisons ready for the challenge?

The Blahs were once the dominant team in the CIS, back when Tom Watt was their coach. Back then a player could stay on the team for 8-9 years if they were getting a PhD. In recent decades they have become very average. Last season they went 15-15-8 overall, and were 24th in the OHT35. This is how I broke down their season:

The Blahs had the weakest schedule in the CIS with 16 games against C teams. They did, however, manage to have a good series against Ottawa where they were eliminated with two OTLs. This team could benefit from a tougher schedule next year. To their credit, they did have non-conference games against Acadia and SMU.

Is a trip out west their idea of seeking a tougher schedule?

What I would like to see from the Bisons is a return to the line-up from the players scratched last weekend:

Those players, with Ian Duval, would significantly raise the level of the team.

The Monkeys swept the Bedrock Boys in a pair of exhibition games earlier on this year. These two games will give them 11 pre-season exhibition games, which must be some sort of a record. Can they sweep? The Friday game will be played in the Town of Bedrock and Saturday's rematch will be in St. Albert.

MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS (0-0-0, 0-2-0)

These teams will play just the once this weekend. Last year's bottom two teams have started winless through 5 combined losses. Not a good sign.

SIMON FRASER CLAN (BCIHL: 0-0-0, 2-1-0) at
UBC THUNDERBIRDS (0-0-0, 0-0-0)

The Clown have so far played three games. They beat Trinity Western and then split 2 games against ACAC teams, losing to SAIT 5-3 and beating the new team from Red Deer 3-2 in OT. The Tweety-Birds have yet to play. The Clown really get up for these games. Still, they always get outshot by a large margin and pray they have a hot goaltender. The teams have played 4 games over the last 2 years. In 2011 each team won a game by a 3-1 score. In 2012 UBC won 8-0 and 4-3.

The CIS Blog ha sput up the AUS preview. In addition to coverage of the exhibition games, it deals with the three bids to host the U-Cup, the Dalhousie soap opera, and the roster-limit rule. Each team can only use 22 non-goaltenders per season. When injuries hit this could be problematic.

The New-Kittens-on-the-Block entered the win column to avoid being shut-out in the pre-season. The H0rny Ones need to be concerned. After last year's debacle they are already 0-4-0. The Kittens built a 4-0 lead before the Viagra kicked in. But it was too little, too late. The closest they git was 4-2, despite outshooting MRU 14-4 in the 3rd period.

Lethbridge takes their 0-4-0 record to the States next weekend to play Minnesota and Minnesota State. Meanwhile, the Kittens are done, having played only 3 pre-season games. They open next weekend at home against Sask.

The Tweety-Birds took game one of the double-header in convincing fashion. It is nice that they play at least one BCIHL team, but one would think they would be better off facing some better opposition. Next weekend they go way up north to face the two Alaskan sides, and that's it for their pre-season.

The rematch goes Saturday in St. Albert. Next weekend the Monkeys are in Manitoba and the Bedrock Boys have been sentenced to a weekend in Regina as both sides open the regular season.
