I'd rather see some of the younger guys get a chance than another old vet.  Consensus?

Yea don't get this one... Good on the PK, then again so is Max Talbot. Gagne could have done the job with more offensive pop. I even think Gagne wanted to stay here for pennies.

At first glance, I'd say give the kids a shot first. Way to many times I see every roster spot accounted for before training camp even opens. There should always be a few spots open to kids who play great and deserve the chance. The big thing about Cleary though, he's tough, gritty and play like a beast in big games. You could do a lot worse than have a hard working vet like Dan Cleary on your 3rd or 4th line. He would instantly make the Flyers considerably tougher to play against, and I like that.

What jammer said. As a Wings fan Cleary plays thru injuries, leaves it all on the ice and is fearless. 15 goals, responsible and well liked by his teammates. He is going to be a good signing for someone.

Then there should be a reason why Holland didn't sign him.   ;)

Holmgren should take notice of that!

I don't have any problem with that signing, but I think we need to understand that it probably means Laughton doesn't make the team.  Maybe that is the goal, but if Cleary signs a contract and not just accepts a camp invite/tryout, Laughton is destined for juniors.

@TarHeelFlyer  When you list them like that, Laughton being a goner this year makes sense. He should not be getting 4th line minutes in Philly, either 3rd line or juniors the way I see it. His development would get stunted a bit playing 6-7 minutes a night. I'd rather see him on the General's getting 1st line minutes and playing on the top pp, gaining more confidence with the puck. I do think he has come close outgrowing the OHL, one more year would not kill him, but I don't think it would necessarily help more than a 3rd line scenario in Philly. Really, with the presence of Coots, 3rd line (barring injury) would probably be a pipedream at this point anyways, so I'd favour one more year of junior I guess.

I wish they would sign Gagne 1st!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not advovating bring back Gagne. There are pros and cons of each, Gagne has had some health problems, but could rekindle that lethal scoring touch.

Cleary probably has a more defined role.

Personally I wouldn't lock Cleary in for more than 2 years if they go that route.

@AMMOnation  I only want a one year deal out of the Cleary signing. It leaves more options open, defends against his coming in and being injury prone, I don't think Dan has the leverage to get a 2 year deal right now, I think he's more just trying to get his foot in the door right now.

detroit is apparently still in talks with cleary as well. so it's not like they don't want him anymore.

I read that also, but about a month ago word out of Detroit was going to move on as they wouldn't sign a 3 year deal.  However, since then Helm has come up with a groin injury so it wouldn't be unrealistic for Detroit to still have interest.  Holland though will not overpay for Cleary.

If I had to pick between Gagne and Cleary, I'd reluctantly go with Cleary. They should both score around the 12-15 mark, but Cleary brings a physical presence that Gagne does not have. Dan can actually hurt opposing d-men with hits, so just another element the Flyers would have. Factoring in Gagne's slightly diminished speed, I think they are both pretty equal on defense, but you get a bit more effort out of Cleary. He has had to work for everything he got in this league, so playing hard is the only thing he knows.

@AMMOnation  I don't think he's known for it league wide, but I've seen him leave some opponents in a heap with legal checks.

simply put.. he's a gamer. the bigger the game, the bigger the player he is. i think he does make the team better... his contract? meh. the NMC is horrible and the money is probably too high. i'm less worried about the money, though, cause the cap is sure to balloon again.
