Morin Signed ELC

Morin signed 3 year entry level contract with bonuses that could lead to a cap hit of $1.425M

Anthony SanFilippo at the Flyers website writes that Morin has impressed during camp and has a bigger chance at cracking the NHL roster this year than we've been led to think, even if for just a nine-game look before he's sent back to Rimouski of the QMJHL. The Flyers can keep him on the NHL roster for nine games before they must make the decision to send him back to juniors or keep him in the NHL, burning off a year of his contract. He's not eligible to play in the AHL, which would be a slower, more logical transition to the professional ranks.

Sending Morin back to juniors makes sense. He's just 18 and the biggest knocks against him at the 2013 Draft -- where the Flyers selected him with the 11th overall pick -- was that he lacks finish and still possesses a very raw skill set. Putting that raw skill set into real, live NHL action based on a handful of preseason games and a few weeks of camp would seem silly, especially considering his age.

I was impressed watching Morin last night, he looked comfortable and seemed to have good ice awareness. But definitely, send him back to juniors and then maybe a year in the AHL after that. No need to rush the kid (or his ELC).

honestly... he looks about as poised as Hal Gill out there, so there seems to be no reason why he can't play in the nhl. but, it would not surprise me to see him stick with them for the 8 games or whatever it is.

Luca Sbisa drafted 19th overall as a 6-2 185 LB defenseman made Flyers as a rookie

So why so kid glove treatment for Morin making Flyers who is bigger and stronger than Sbisa

You keep talking about being big and strong, as if that's all there is to playing defense at the NHL level... There were defensemen taken above him who are seen as clearly better defensive prospects that won't get a sniff of the NHL this year.

Maybe it's just me, but I have a particular philosophy when it comes to developing players:

a] Give them lots of minutes in a league which will challenge, yet not overwhelm their level of experience.

b] As they demonstrate that they have answers for these challenges, move them up to a higher level of competition which will, again, further challenge heir abilities.

c] Keep doing this until you have an NHL player on your hands.

d] Whatever you do, don't burn through their entry level deal until they are truly ready to be NHL players. Paying a kid NHL money and bringing him a step closer towards free agency when he's not yet an NHL calibre player is a mismanagement of assets.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised either if they gave him a few games at the beginning of the year.

because the flyers were desperate for dmen when sbisa was a rookie.  he made a good case, and the flyers needed bodies.

now, the flyers are up to their ears with dmen.  morin would have to have proven that not only could he hang in the NHL, but would be a sizable upgrade on what they already have.  sbisa didn't, he just had to be able to hang.
