Scott Laughton 2013 Hilights.

Love this guys game. Never takes one off ever. Plays hard on every square inch of the ice. His hands have just gotten better and better. He's going to help his linemate (Michael del Colle) go top 5 next draft. Scouts love his scoring (meanwhile Laughton has 2 more goals in 4 less games)

What the highlight reel doesn't show is how good he is shorthanded or even 5 on 5 without the puck.

i had a tough time not getting distracted by the questionable joy division cover playing throughout.

and by how weak defensive coverage is in the CHL.  the kid has talent, but 3/4's of those shots never happen against NHL defenders.  makes it really tough to project kids forward.

didn't mean to voice a concern, it just always strikes me in these junior highlight videos how soft the opposition is, overall.  i mean, look at the space he has, like, always.  everyone covers their man by leaning over and waving their stick at him.  he does one of those fake outside/cut inside things, and you can actually see the defender's thought process, "oh, crap, he went the other way, ok, have to stop, so, turn this skate, ok good, alright, now the other, awesome, now bring this skate over the other, and -oh, man he scored."  on a fluffy unscreened backhand from 30 feet out.

on the one hand, it means these few guys really are head and shoulders above their current peers and are able to pull things like that off...on the other hand, their future peers are going to put them on their ass a lot if they try the same things.  keeps it interesting.

that's good, but forget about the dman's name for a moment and look at what happens.  the last dman back is WAY too far forward while the puck is in the neutral zone, his partner is WAY too far forward for a transition that has begun to retreat.  result, four skaters on the offensive side of center red, last dman 10 feet short of it, a panic pass that bounces over his stick, and a clean breakaway that begins outside the blueline.  capped off by a goalie who was too far out of his net and didn't have the momentum to cover to the post under control.  it looks like it was a shorthanded situation, so that gives a little context to the too-aggressive posture, but that play was way more about tenacious neutral zone pressure and poor team defensive positioning (and suspect goaltending) than it was the forward's magic hands.

i'm just saying the opportunities that present themselves to forwards at that level aren't the same as what they'll see at the next level, and that's what always strikes me when i see junior highlight videos.

LOL. Sure. And if I'm a goalie like say, Barries (who's ranked 4th in the league) I'm not going to be facing Steven Stamkos, Sydney Crosby or Alex Ovechkin. Laughton is a teenager playing against the best teenagers in the world. And developing some hands that he just didn't have when Philly drafted him.

Remember when he was drafted? Everyone said......who? And rightly so. Everyone about fell over dead when they'd didn't take Matta. To aziz's point...how the hell did they do that? Was it luck or is there someone in in the organization that can squint ahead and see this stuff? Pretty impressive if it isn't mostly luck.

Can anyone say how Matta is looking by comparison?

joke.  the kid is going to be good, don't mean to take that away.  just, the level of competition in junior makes it really hard to squint and see his future.

That "level" of competetion is what most 19 year olds face on their way to the NHL. Most NHL players are still in junior as teenagers. Most NHLers also then go play in the AHL for a year or two or three.

Of course if Philly wasn't seven deep at center Laughton might already be up. But I still think it's doing his development a favour playing a ton of minutes right where he is.

I don't disagree with that at all.

Ok, Laughton is looking good, but we are stacked at center and Schenn is already playing wing. With  Timmo retiring and us having no offensive dmen in our system, are there any teams that are weak up front and have a good young defenseman to offer us in a trade?  Im not saying Laughton will be traded, but its gonna  be , Laugton, Coots or Schenn. There is no way we have any transition game with just Streit, we need a puck rusher and theres no room for another center, someone will go....

Anyone have any insights on an upcoming young dman we can target ?

Flyer Canuck,I forgot about Ghost, but he is still 30 pounds, and a few years away, as are Haag and Morin. So when Timmo retires, that leaves us with Streit and Gus, neither of which, are anything to write home about. So ,as we have in the past, Recchi for Desjardins, lots for Pronger, Linseman for Howe...Im hoping we can deal from our strength at center and land a young dman who can step in and provide some offense. We have a solid defensive game and size, but nothing in the transition ,skating game, Timmo and Streit are in the downside of their careers.

I generally don't give a sh!t about a player until he's in the league and what you just said is why.
